"I've learned that around ₹410 crore has been taken away from my department. I wasn't kept in the loop about this," Shirsat said. "If you don't value the social justice department or feel it's unnecessary, then just shut it down. There's a limit to my tolerance." Shirsat's ire is directed at the Finance Ministry, claiming that funds allocated to his ministry cannot legally be repurposed without his consent.
Diversion of Funds
The Finance Ministry has diverted ₹410 crore from Shirsat's Social Justice Ministry and ₹335 crore from the Tribal Welfare Ministry for the Ladki Bahin scheme. This follows a previous diversion of ₹7,000 crore in March. Shirsat believes the action is unlawful and insists that the funds are meant for social welfare projects and cannot be used elsewhere.

Bawankule meets sulking Shirsat amid funds diversion controversy
Mumbai: Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Wednesday called on social justice minister Sanjay Shirsat to pacify him after the Shiv Sena leader expressed unhappiness over the diversion of funds from his department towards the populist Majhi Ladki Bahin scheme, according to people aware of the developments. Bawankule and Shirsat, however, insisted that they met to discuss a project in Kamathi, Nagpur. Bawankule visited Shirsat's official bungalow in Mumbai on Wednesday morning, according to people in the know. Shirsat, a Dalit leader, had earlier accused the Ajit Pawar-led state finance department of high-handedness for diverting funds from his department, meant for the welfare of the Scheduled Castes and other underprivileged sections of society, towards the Ladki Bahin scheme without his knowledge. He is also unhappy about corruption charges levelled against him, as he believes the information is being provided to the Opposition from within the government to defame him. Against this backdrop, Bawankule's visit to Shirsat's residence assumes significance and is being seen as an attempt to ensure cordial relations between the BJP and Shiv Sena. The state BJP chief, however, said that the meeting was to seek the social justice department's contribution for the makeover of Dragon Palace, a Buddhist temple in Kamathi, Nagpur. Bawankule said the state government has allocated ₹214 crore for the makeover, and the ground-breaking ceremony for the work will soon take place. 'I had come to meet the social justice minister to seek his cooperation,' he said. Shirsat also said that he and Bawankule did not discuss any political matter. 'I had been inviting him to my house for a cup of tea as we share friendly relations. I have assured him full support for the makeover of Dragon Palace,' he said. Shirsat claimed he was not upset over the diversion of funds from his department, adding that he discussed the issue with finance minister Ajit Pawar during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Bawankule said that the Mahayuti government cannot even think of diverting funds meant for Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes. According to the BJP insiders, the renovation of Dragon Palace is important for the party as it was trailing in the Assembly polls in Kamathi city by 17,000 votes. Bawankule represents the Kamathi constituency and is pushing the renovation project ahead of the upcoming local body polls. 'Kamathi city, where the project is located, is dominated by Dalit votes, and the visit to the residence of Shirsat, who is a Dalit leader, has political symbolism,' the leader said.

Mahayuti will unitedly contest local body polls, but open to friendly fights: Fadnavis
Nagpur/Akola: The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance will contest the upcoming local body elections together, barring friendly fights where tie-ups do not materialise, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Wednesday. Fadnavis told reporters in Akola "we have decided to contest the polls as an alliance. There will be friendly fights wherever a tie-up does not work." He added the final decision will rest with state party president Chandrashekhar Bawankule. Talking to TOI in Nagpur, Bawankule said, "We will fight all elections in the state together as a grand alliance. We have given instructions to the party leaders and workers. Our local-rung workers are discussing this with each other. However, if a dispute arises in any place over a seat, there will be a friendly fight there. However, in other places, elections will be fought in alliance, so there is no need to be confused. " In Fadnavis' hometown Nagpur, BJP won 108 seats during the 2017 civic polls. Centre trying to kill MGNREGS, says Congress leader Jairam Ramesh
The Congress has accused the government of trying to throttle the flagship rural employment programme — Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) — after it was revealed that for the first time since its implementation, the government has capped its spending at 60% of its annual allocation for the first half of the financial year 2025-26. Sharing a screenshot on social media platform X of a media report on the issue, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said, 'How to kill MGNREGA in three easy steps — Step I: Starve MGNREGA of funds for a decade, resulting in stagnant wages and a massive rise in pending dues - amounting to ₹21,000 crores as of the beginning of this financial year Step II: Introduce the Finance Ministry's Monthly/Quarterly Expenditure Plan, restricting MGNREGA expenditure in the first six months of the financial year to 60% of the annual budget.' Step three he said, would be to stop providing work due to budget shortfall after payment of pending dues. 'Step I and II are in motion. Step III is coming soon,' Mr. Ramesh added. He said what needs to be done instead is that MGNREGS wages must be increased to ₹400 per day. He argued that the Aadhar Based Payment Bridge Systems (ABPS) must not be made mandatory. Wages must be paid within the statutory period of 15 days and any delay in payment must be compensated, Mr. Ramesh said. According to sources, this is the first time the government has introduced such a limitation on MGNREGA which is essentially a demand driven programme, where irrespective of the budget, if a beneficiary demands for work, the government has to provide for it. At the beginning of this Financial Year, the government brought the programme under — Monthly/Quarterly Expenditure Plan, which is a mechanism to regulate government expenditure. Majority of the programmes have a cap of 25% for each quarter. When the Ministry of Rural Development submitted its estimate for the first quarter, it was far beyond 25% of the total budget because of the pending liability. After much back and forth, the Finance Ministry sanctioned that out of the total outlay of MGNREGS of ₹86,000 crores, up to 60% can be spent over the next two quarters. This means that only ₹51,600 crores will be available for the scheme until the end of September.
