Totally unacceptable – Jack MacKenzie hit by object thrown by Aberdeen fans

Glasgow Times18-05-2025

Home fans invaded the pitch at Tannadice after the final-day win which clinched fourth spot in the William Hill Premiership and a place in Europe.
Amid the chaos, MacKenzie, an unused substitute, was struck by a missile thrown from the section holding Aberdeen fans and was given lengthy treatment before being taken away in a wheelchair with a bloodied bandage around his head. Stitches were required.
A Police Scotland statement read: 'Part of a chair was thrown from the upper deck of the Fair Play Stand striking an Aberdeen player. He received treatment at the scene and will require further medical assessment.'
United's lap of honour was called off and afterwards Thelin said: 'What's happened is totally unacceptable. It is actually a bad injury but Jack is OK so let's see how it feels after more minutes.

'It is not acceptable, it is really really bad. I haven't seen exactly what happened but our player got hurt, bad. I think everyone understands that is not OK.
'He got treatment already and the medical team did really well. There is the shock also when this happens.
'You are a football player in a football game and get hit like that. We just take care of the player now and take it from there.'
United boss Jim Goodwin, who was pelted with missiles from Dons fans when they visited in December, was equally condemnatory.
The former Aberdeen manager said: 'It's an absolute disgrace. I'm gutted for Jack MacKenzie, who's a terrific young player, and for him to be hit and seriously damaged by an object thrown by his own supporters, it's crazy. And it's not the first time.

'I've had a number of objects thrown at me throughout the season by the Aberdeen supporters and nothing has been done about it.
'So maybe it'll take a serious incident like this to happen in order for the authorities to really step in, take notice and punish those guys and ban them from football for life.'
Police match commander, Supt Ray Birnie, said: 'This was a mindless act which has seriously injured the player resulting in him needing medical treatment.
'This type of behaviour will not be tolerated and I'd appeal to all fans to help us trace the person responsible.'
Fraser Wishart, PFA Scotland chief executive, witnessed the scenes.
He said: 'Jack MacKenzie is one of the PFA Scotland management committee so he was at a meeting the other day. So when you see him being wheeled off you are obviously pretty concerned.
'I have been warning for a long time that something like this would happen if we don't stop it. I don't get the mentality of anyone who would throw an object of any kind at a player.

'It is like Groundhog Day and I have always said if someone was to get hurt we are into a different domain. A player in this case is possibly going to come to us and then we are going to say what are we going to do.
'It is difficult for the authorities and the clubs, I get all of that but we are denying there is an issue here. I think over the whole season we have seen incidents and our members endangered on the field of play and this one is after the game as well.
'So something has to be done. There has to be conversations between the governing bodies, the clubs, ourselves, the managers and coaching associations to try and find a way out of this as it can't go on. These incidents are on the rise.'
An SPFL spokesperson said: 'It's enormously disappointing and frustrating that one of the most exciting games in the season has been marred by such moronic behaviour.
'We await the match delegate report but will work closely with both clubs and Police Scotland to help identify the perpetrator and fully expect that appropriately severe footballing and judicial sanctions will be imposed.'

A statement from Aberdeen read: 'The club is dismayed and outraged at the scenes that unfolded following this afternoon's Premiership tie with Dundee United at Tannadice Park.
'Our player, Jack MacKenzie, has sustained a serious facial injury after being struck by a part of a chair that was thrown towards the pitch.
'We await further information, but what we know for sure, the chair was thrown from the stand in which the Aberdeen supporters were being housed.
'As such, we are calling on all fans who may have witnessed this event to contact the club to provide any information that may assist us in our investigations and wider discussions with the relevant authorities.
'When the perpetrator is identified, we will take the strongest possible action available to us.'

Aberdeen 'in talks' to sign Australia international striker

Aberdeen have been linked with a move for Portsmouth striker Kusini Yengi. The 26-year-old is available on a free transfer with his deal at Pompey set to end this month. According to Sky Sports, the Dons are in talks with Yengi, who has scored six goals in 11 games for Australia. It could be the third Australian to sign for the Dons during the summer transfer window following the arrival of winger Nicolas Milanovic from Western Sydney Wanderers and goalkeeper Nick Suman from Cove Rangers. On Friday the Dons signed German youth international Emmanuel Gyamfi on a four-year deal from FC Schalke 04.

Alejandro Garnacho offered surprise Manchester United transfer escape route

Alejandro Garnacho faces little prospect of a future with Manchester United following his explosive fallout with Ruben Amorim and a switch to Saudi Arabia could potentially be on the cards Manchester United misfit Alejandro Garnacho could be offered an escape route from Old Trafford by Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr. The Argentine is being discussed as an alternative target to Liverpool winger Luis Diaz after the Premier League champions made it clear that the Colombian is still part of Arne Slot 's plans when they were sounded out by Barcelona about their intentions for the 28-year-old. Al-Nassr have told former Kop favourite Sadio Mane that he can leave the club this summer - and want a top-class replacement. With Diaz now appearing set to stay at Anfield, the Saudis are now exploring the possibility of offering Garnacho the chance to link up again with his boyhood hero Cristiano Ronaldo. ‌ The Reds have also had interest from Saudi about Jadon Sancho after Chelsea sent the former England winger back to Manchester following his season-long loan at Stamford Bridge. And with United boss Ruben Amorim looking to clear the decks for a summer rebuild, Inter Milan have made contact with United about the possibility of taking misfiring £72million striker Rasmus Hojlund back to Italy. ‌ The beaten Champions League finalists want to take the 20-year-old former Atlalanta forward on-loan next season but are willing to agree to a £38million obligation-to-buy next year. That would save on Hojlund's £90,000-a-week wages. After telling Amorim that his budget for new players will be beefed up by cash generated from sales, there is also another potential money-maker in the pipeline. Former boss Erik ten Hag remains a big admirer of Antony and is weighing up whether to take the £80million Brazilian winger with him to Bayer Leverkusen after his successful loan spell with Real Betis. Betis don't have the £35million it will cost to keep Antony permanently, while Leverkusen will bank in excess of £110million for Florian Wirtz once they have settled on a fee with Liverpool. But it's Garnacho who is likely to give United their biggest pay-day. The Old Trafford club rejected a £40million bid from Napoli in January. But Amorim told the Madrid-born Argentina international to find a new club following a row in the aftermath of the Europa League Final defeat by Tottenham last month. Handing United their asking price will not be a problem for Al-Nassr - and the prospect of playing alongside Ronaldo would be a huge draw for Garnacho. ‌ Who should Man United sign this summer? Share your thoughts in the comments below Al-Nassr are currently in talks with Ronaldo about extending a contract that expires at the end of the month - and senior officials from the Saudi government have now entered the negotiations in a bid to keep the country's £3.2million-a-week poster boy in the country. ‌ They want the 40-year-old Portuguese's future signed and sealed before cranking up their summer recruitment drive. Garnacho grew up idolising Ronaldo - and even risked the wrath of Argentine legend Lionel Messi when he first broke into his country's senior squad as a teenager by name-checking the Portuguese as football's greatest-ever player. United have already started splashing the cash with the £62.5million capture of Matheus Cunha from Wolves and will have to get close to that fee if they are to prise Bryan Mbeumo away from Brentford. The Reds missed out on a £100million pay-day when captain Bruno Fernandes turned down a £700,000-a-week contract with Al Hilal last week. Getting maximum value from the sale of Garnacho and others would enable them to pursue Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres.
