Aaron Rodgers was Steelers' ‘third option' at quarterback before pairing came together
The Steelers may have waited around for Aaron Rodgers to finally sign a contract, but that doesn't mean he was their No. 1 choice. In fact, the ex-Jet quarterback was apparently Pittsburgh's third choice for the position, ESPN's Adam Schefter recently reported. The Steelers announced that Rodgers inked a one-year contract with the team after a lengthy waiting game, but the decision to bring in the four-time NFL MVP was out of necessity rather than choice. Advertisement 'This was the third option for the Pittsburgh Steelers,' Schefter said during Friday's 'NFL Live' while discussing the signing. 'They were in on Matthew Stafford and couldn't get done a trade. They tried to re-sign Justin Fields, he opted to go to the New York Jets, where he will meet Rodgers on opening day. Robert Sabo for the NY Post The quarterback is coming off a season in which he threw 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, but it wasn't enough to help the Jets reach the lofty goals that were placed upon the team at the beginning of the year — and they finished 5-12. Advertisement The Jets opted to move on from Rodgers earlier this year during a meeting at the team's facility, which the future Hall of Famer later went on to criticize in an appearance on 'The Pat McAfee Show.' Rodgers was spotted at the Steelers' facility over the weekend, entering the building a little after 8 a.m. on Saturday. Advertisement Aaron Rodgers arrived at the Steelers' facility June 7. WTAE Rodgers' contract is worth $13.65 million and includes $10 million of guaranteed money, as well as incentives that could increase its worth up to $19.5 million. NBA at 'least a couple years away from launching' NBA Europe league, Adam Silver says
OKLAHOMA CITY — In March, the NBA and international basketball governing body FIBA announced a joint 'exploration of a new professional men's basketball league in Europe.' That's still moving forward, just don't expect it to happen quickly, Adam Silver told reporters at an NBA Cares event at a refurbished Boys & Girls Club in Oklahoma City on Friday, via Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press. 'I will say it's measured in years, not months,' Silver said. 'So, we're at least a couple years away from launching. It would be an enormous undertaking. And while we want to move forward at a deliberate pace, we also want to make sure that we're consulting with all the appropriate stakeholders, meaning the existing league, its teams, European players, media companies, marketing partners. There's a lot of work to be done.' Silver told reporters that the NBA is in talks with the existing EuroLeague (the basketball equivalent of the soccer Champions League, featuring the top clubs on the continent) about a partnership at some level. However, what that might look like (or if it would even work) is up for debate. The NBA's initial target was a 16-team league, something Silver previously said would be 'integrated into the current European basketball landscape,' which means teams would continue competing in their respective national leagues. There would be permanent members in the NBA Europe league (existing clubs and possibly some new ones) as well as a chance for teams to be promoted into it each year. Speaking at the NBA Paris games in January, Silver said the goal was to 'professionalize the game to another level here, to create a larger commercial opportunity' — to make more money, both for European teams, but also to expand the NBA brand (and with that make the American owners more money). Silver discussed the European league in terms of NBA expansion when speaking with the media before Game 1 of the Finals. 'We have been discussing potentially creating a league in Europe. I view that as a form of expansion as well,' Silver said. 'Again, just as the same as in American cities, we think there's an opportunity to serve fans in Europe. No knock on European basketball, because most of those international MVPs I just talked about are coming from Europe. There's really high-level basketball being played there. But we think there is an opportunity to better serve fans there. I view that as a form of expansion as well, and that's something we're also thinking hard about.' There are numerous stakeholders, and a lot of mouths to feed; putting together this new league is a massive challenge. The NBA owners will discuss next steps when they meet in July, Silver said. Whatever those next steps are, this is a process that will take years, not months.

What Are the Steelers' Super Bowl Odds After Signing Aaron Rodgers?
There's reason to celebrate in Pittsburgh after the Steelers are set to reportedly sign Aaron Rodgers to a 1-year deal. But who, exactly, is celebrating is a hotly contested debate. For Rodgers, it's a chance at redemption and a chance to solidify his legacy, after a mostly unimpressive stint with the New York Jets the last two seasons. Rodgers had initially joined a Jets team loaded with weapons and one quarterback away from making a deep playoff run. Rodgers was supposed to be the final missing piece, that is until he ruptured his Achilles four snaps into the 2023 season. Advertisement The following year, the Jets fired their coach, Robert Saleh, midway into the season and the hapless Jets finished with a 5-12 stinker. After much speculation, the Jets ultimately parted ways with Rodgers, 41, who then contemplated retirement or sign elsewhere. But while Rodgers may be celebrating another year of employment, are fans celebrating the signing? Pittsburgh went 10-7 with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Wilson left this offseason and signed with the New York Giants, while Fields ended up in Rodgers' old stomping grounds with the Jets, leaving the Steelers reeling in the quarterback depth chart. While Rodgers may be an upgrade over Mason Rudolph, that's not saying all that much. Advertisement There was a time when Rodgers signing with a new team -- like when he joined the Jets -- would bolster said team's Super Bowl odds. But Rodgers reportedly signing with the Steelers didn't move the needle in Vegas, and there's actually a reasonable explanation. According to DraftKings Sports, the Steelers' chances before Rodgers signed with Pittsburgh were +4000. And after he signed? Still +4000. By comparison, the Steelers' odds at BetMGM is still at +4500 to win the Super Bowl, putting them at 17 among the 32 teams. The Steelers also have a win total of 8.5, and they remain an underdog to make the postseason at +150. Advertisement So, why didn't Rodgers' signing move the needle? "They would have been rated towards the bottom without this signing," BetMGM trading manager Christian Cipollini told Yahoo Sports. "Obviously a massive upgrade over other QBs in the room, but it was assumed he was going to sign [with Pittsburgh] so it was baked in." So, Vegas had a hunch he'd sign with the Steelers and factored that into the 2025 Super Bowl odds and still didn't give Pittsburgh a real chance at winning the Lombardi Trophy.
