This Is Toyota's Vision of Micromobility—Check out the Top Speed
Toyota's FT-Me concept previews a two-seat EV meant for dense urban environments filled with scooters and bicycles.
The concept is aimed at those who could be scooter license holders, and is classified as a low-speed four-wheeler rather than a car.
Several automakers are branching out into the field of micromobility, though large-scale business successes in this field remain relatively rare.
The first half of the decade may have been all about large and lavish EVs, as several automakers introduced money-no-object electric SUVs and trucks while engaging in an arms race when it comes to battery range.
But despite the tide of pricey electric SUVs still coming in, the second half of the decade could yet strike a more austere, spartan tone as EV makers cater to those who've largely ignored the extravagant and exaggerated EVs of the present day.
The Toyota FT-Me concept, revealed a short time ago in Belgium, previews the automaker's plans when it comes to micromobility offerings in the coming years. And it's not even technically a car.
The two-seater is just two and a half yards in length, fitting into the L6 class in Europe that opens it up to those who might not be old enough to have a driver's license, but have one for a scooter. The FT-Me, therefore, resides in a category of low-speed four-wheelers that can mix with city traffic and enter zones where bicycles and scooters are welcome but cars are not.
"The FT-Me concept embraces Toyota's 'Mobility for All' philosophy, embracing both younger drivers as well as those wanting to downsize in the changing urban landscape," the automaker explains.
That top speed is just 28 mph, which certainly limits the variety of roads one might be able to use even in a stereotypical, bike-centric city in Holland.
What's more, the FT-Me doesn't even have pedals, relying on hand controls that could also make it easy to use for wheelchair users. But its primary goal is to offer an alternative to cars and smaller modes of transport in dense urban areas.
"As cities continue to evolve, the FT-Me provides a versatile, sustainable, and stylish solution, and another step towards creating an all-inclusive mobility ecosystem for people, goods, and services," Toyota says.
At this point, the FT-Me's advantages over a gas-powered scooter or a bicycle for that matter might not seem all that grand once real-world pricing and parking space requirements enter the picture.
A range of 62 miles, however, opens up some real commuter possibilities that would otherwise require a larger scooter or a motorcycle, if not a car. And the concept's solar roof, when the sky is cooperating, could give the battery an extra 19 miles of range per day, though perhaps that's a tall order in the low countries.
Micromobility, especially in its caricature form, might still seem like a remnant of early-aughts futurism, or a year 2000 picture of the year 2025 when everyone was supposed to commute in some kind of tiny solar-powered hatchback with the weight of a Vespa. In the 1980s, the Sinclair C5 imagined something very similar, though on an even scarier scale.
Where this utopian vision of micromobility merges with the present reality is Citroën Ami, which we suspect is the real reason Toyota is motivated to pursue this direction at all.
The French microhatch, resembling a vehicle from a Richard Scarry book, is a very real example of a vehicle in this segment. And it is a sales success in its own category, having awoken Europe's industry to vehicles that aren't really cars, even when compared to the highway-capable Smart ForTwo, but are certainly more than motorcycles.
BMW's line of small electric motorcycles and cyberpunk-styled CE 04 scooters is another example of the greater micromobility universe.
We are not holding our breath to see a Toyota EV like this in the US anytime soon, with Costco runs dictating interior space for the foreseeable future. But we wouldn't be surprised to see vehicles like it in many European cities by the end of the decade.
Will small urban EVs like this ever make sense in the US, or are these purely for dense cities overseas? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Why Novo Nordisk Stock Eked Out a Win on Monday
A media report stated that an activist investor is accumulating a stake in the Wegovy maker. According to the article, that investor aims to influence the company's choice of a chief executive. 10 stocks we like better than Novo Nordisk › Wegovy and Ozempic maker Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO) saw its stock price tick up slightly on Monday, on a media report about the possible entry of an activist investor. Market players cautiously bid the shares a little more than 1% higher on the news. Although this wasn't a giant gain, it was sufficient to top the S&P 500 index's basically flat-line performance. Citing unnamed "people with knowledge of the details," the Financial Times reported Monday that London-based activist hedge fund Parvus Asset Management is accumulating stock in Novo Nordisk. The FT's sources said that the goal is to influence the company's choice of CEO, as its longtime leader Lars Fruergaard Jørgensen stepped down from the post last month. A replacement has not yet been found. It wasn't immediately clear how much of a stake Parvus has managed to amass. Novo Nordisk is based in Denmark and listed on that country's main stock exchange. Per Danish securities law, a strategic investor need not disclose the size of a stake if its holding is below 5% of a company's equity. While Parvus isn't a well-known activist investor to many Americans, it has been actively involved in European companies. Among the businesses in which it has taken a stake are discount airline Ryanair and storied Italian bank UniCredit. Neither Novo Nordisk nor Parvus has yet commented on the FT article. Activist investors often circle the water when a company is struggling and its share price sinks. That's been the case with Novo Nordisk, which has seen setbacks in its drug development activities lately while facing intensifying competition for weight-loss drug Wegovy. I don't think investors should trade on the basis of whether an activist like Parvus will enter the company and begin agitating once it's there. The situation is worth monitoring, though, as a determined activist can indeed shape the strategy of a business. Toyota, Subaru Hit with Class-Action Lawsuit Over Claims of 12-Volt Batteries in EVs That Keep Dying
A new lawsuit filed against Subaru and Toyota claims that the two automakers' jointly developed electric vehicles, the Solterra and bZ4X, suffers from an issue that causes the 12-volt battery used for accessories to repeatedly fail, with the plaintiff filing the suit claiming his vehicle has gone through multiple batteries in 5000 miles. The class-action lawsuit, which was filed in the U.S. Eastern District Court of California, claims that Subaru and Toyota both knew about 12-volt battery problems before the the Bz4X or Solterra went on sale. Allegedly, these cars (from the 2023–2025 model years) drain and kill the 12-volt battery on a regular basis; despite that, the suit claims the two carmakers failed to warn customers or to fix the issues at hand. The filing mainly focuses on this single owner's account. "The 12-volt battery equipped in Plaintiff Wade's Class Vehicle has failed three times after only about 5000 miles of driving the vehicle. The 12-volt battery in Plaintiff Wade's vehicle has been replaced twice since March 2023,"says the filing, according to The owner claims that the first failure happened within weeks of ownership; then the battery died again when it had around 2000 miles on it, and yet again around the 5000-mile mark. Based on other accounts posted online, however, he's not alone when it comes to 12-volt battery issues. As one person with a 2024 example of the Solterra told the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration: "I have had the car since December of 2024, the car was a new lease. The battery has failed twice — once in January, and again last week. When I took it to the dealership, they said they replaced the battery, the new battery is now doing the same thing." On Reddit, customers have been complaining about similar situations since early 2023. "At 6 months had the 12 volt battery replaced, now after 3 weeks getting low battery again," said one commenter. Another made a post in January alleging that since picking up the car in April of 2024, they've had a dead 12-volt battery three different times. Interestingly, it doesn't appear as though the lawsuit in question defines what the central issue is between the 12-volt battery and the rest of the system. In other words, it doesn't define what the core defect, is aside from the 12-volt battery dying prematurely. Whether or not that factors into the suit's outcome is yet to be seen. The electric Toyobaru siblings are hardly the only EVs to suffer from issues and allegations of problems with their 12-volt batteries in recent years. Back in 2021, Ford issued a service bulletin regarding a software problem that caused the Mustang Mach-E's 12-volt to drain while the car's propulsion battery was being charged, while earlier this year, an owner took to Reddit to claim that his 2021 Mach-E's 12-volt lost power and trapped his child in the vehicle. Meanwhile, back in 2023, Hyundai found owners of the Ioniq 5 complaining about unexpected 12-volt battery death, eventually pinning the problem down as one related to third-party applications pinging the car too frequently via Bluetooth.
