Drummer Zak Starkey speaks out after leaving The Who
Drummer Zak Starkey has said he is "surprised and saddened" after parting ways with The Who following recent charity shows at the Royal Albert Hall.
The musician, who is the son of The Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and his first wife, Maureen Starkey, had been with the band since 1996, when he joined for their Quadrophenia tour.
He was introduced to drumming as a child by "Uncle Keith" - The Who drummer and family friend Keith Moon, who died in 1978.
Earlier this week, the band issued a statement saying a "collective decision" had been made about his departure. It came after their Teenage Cancer Trust shows in March.
A review of one gig, published in the Metro, suggested frontman Roger Daltrey - who launched the annual gig series for the charity in 2000 - was "frustrated" with the drumming during some tracks.
Now, Starkey has issued a statement to Rolling Stone, saying he is "very proud" of his near 30 years with The Who.
"Filling the shoes of my Godfather, 'Uncle Keith' has been the biggest honour and I remain their biggest fan," he said. "They've been like family to me."
In January, Starkey suffered a blood clot in his right leg and a performance with his other band Mantra Of The Cosmos - which also features Shaun Ryder and Bez from Happy Mondays, and Andy Bell of Ride and Oasis - was cancelled.
Referencing this in his statement to Rolling Stone, Starkey said: "I suffered a serious medical emergency with blood clots in my right bass drum calf. This is now completely healed and does not affect my drumming or running."
He continued: "After playing those songs with the band for so many decades, I'm surprised and saddened anyone would have an issue with my performance that night, but what can you do?"
Starkey said he planned to "take some much needed time off with my family" and focus on the release of Mantra Of The Cosmos single Domino Bones, which features Noel Gallagher, as well as his autobiography.
"Twenty-nine years at any job is a good old run, and I wish them the best," he added.
Starkey has also previously played with Oasis, Lightning Seeds and Johnny Marr.
While Daltrey starts a solo tour at the weekend, The Who have two shows planned for Italy in July but no full tour. Details of a replacement for Starkey have not been announced.

Musician Pete Townshend says he believes a new ballet version of his rock opera Quadrophenia will "resonate with new audiences".The co-founder of The Who is backing Quadrophenia, a Mod Ballet – based on his own music and the subsequent film about mods and rockers clashing in 1960s ballet, which had its premiere in Plymouth, is touring venues around the UK in June and told BBC South East that he thought the story of rebellion and youth culture would make a "powerfully rhythmic and emotionally engaging ballet". Mario Kart World doesn't have 200cc but it is easier to dodge blue shells now
A producer behind Mario Kart World has hinted 200cc could be added post-launch, as various other tweaks are unearthed. Mario Kart World looks set to be the Switch 2's best game when it launches alongside the console on Thursday, but there are still some lingering questions about its features. Following our latest hands-on preview, our primary concern was whether there's enough to do in the open world, or if this will be expanded upon with live service style events and additional missions post-launch. While we don't know how Nintendo plans to support Mario Kart World in the future, the game's producer, Kosuke Yabuki, has implied 200cc, the fastest and highest difficulty from its predecessor, could make a return. Yabuki was asked about the possibility of 200cc making a return in an interview with Rolling Stone, where he gave a coy response. 'Some players are really happy with the addition of high difficulty modes like this,' Yabuki replied. 'However, does that mean we're going to consider adding engine sizes that are larger than 150cc to Mario Kart World? I'm afraid I can't say just yet.' Some people might bemoan the lack of 200cc in Mario Kart World at launch, but it was originally introduced as a free post-launch update for Mario Kart 8 in 2015, alongside the Animal Crossing DLC tracks. Beyond DLC, Mario Kart fans have noticed several other quirks about the next instalment. As highlighted in videos on X, it appears the window to dodge blue shells with a well-timed mushroom boost has been expanded and made easier to pull off. More Trending Other mechanics in Mario Kart World might make this easier too. The new ability to Charge Jump, along with the return of the Feather item, which allows you to pull off large hops, makes dodging pesky shells easier across the board – although you're still going to have to be very skilled/lucky to avoid a blue shell. If you're worried this might imbalance the fundamental laws of Mario Kart, the larger number of racers on the track at one time (24 in total) who are all firing weapons, coupled with the larger track sizes, appears to even these things out, based on our time with the game. Aside from Mario Kart World, the Switch 2 launch line-up also includes Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, Split Fiction, and others.
