Osaka Gas India powers ahead with clean energy vision

Time of India4 hours ago

Tokyo: Japanese energy giant Osaka Gas, established in 1897, is making significant strides in India's energy sector. With a legacy of expertise in gas production, supply, and pipeline infrastructure, the company also maintains a strong presence in electricity generation.
Following successful expansions across Asia, the United States, and Australia, Osaka Gas launched its Indian subsidiary,
Osaka Gas India
, in 2021. Now, four years later, the company is charting an ambitious course for clean and sustainable energy in the country.
In an exclusive interview, Takeshi Shinohara, Managing Director of Osaka Gas India, reflected on the company's journey and expanding role in the Indian energy landscape.
"In just four years, Osaka Gas India's operational area has expanded to cover 10 per cent of India's land--roughly equivalent to the size of Japan," said Shinohara.
In India, Osaka Gas is actively engaged in
city gas supply
and pipeline construction, working in partnership with Chennai-based firm Think Gas. This collaboration has enabled rapid development of urban gas infrastructure and ensured efficient energy distribution.
The company's long-term vision for India rests on three foundational pillars. The first is its traditional strength in city gas operations. The second is a growing focus on
renewable energy
. In partnership with Indian
clean energy
leader CleanMax, Osaka Gas India is generating electricity through solar and wind power, serving industrial clients that demand environmentally sustainable energy.
"Our success so far has been made possible through strong partnerships with trusted Indian companies," Shinohara noted.
Takeshi Shinohara emphasizes the third pillar of Indian business: new energy in the form of
e-methane
.
"City gas emits CO2, but Osaka Gas India combines it with hydrogen derived from renewable sources to produce e-methane -- a circulative model of clean energy production," said Shinohara
Shinohara emphasized that India's economic momentum and social transformation are fueling demand for smarter, greener energy options.
"India's rising economic power and dynamic society will drive increasing demand for cleaner and more efficient energy solutions in the coming years," he said.
Unlike passive financial investors, Osaka Gas operates with a "hands-on" philosophy, committed to transferring technical knowledge and building long-term capabilities within India.
"Real Scene, Real Material, Reality," Shinohara stated, describing the company's core principles. "This reflects our deep commitment to operational excellence and grounded experience."
Looking ahead, Osaka Gas sees India as an integral part of its global future.
"By 2030, India will become a major pillar of Osaka Gas's global business," he predicted.
Yet, Shinohara also highlighted the stark developmental contrasts between India's urban centers and rural heartlands, particularly in agricultural regions.
"Osaka Gas India aims for real symbiosis with Indian society by combining our global experience with local understanding," he concluded.
As India undergoes a profound transformation in its energy landscape, Osaka Gas India's integrated approach--grounded in innovation, collaboration, and sustainability--could play a pivotal role in shaping the country's clean energy future.

Microsoft confirms next-gen Xbox console with AMD partnership, multi-store support

Microsoft announced today that its next-generation Xbox console will feature AMD silicon and won't be restricted to a single game store, marking a significant shift in the company's gaming strategy. Xbox President Sarah Bond confirmed the development in a YouTube video, promising "an Xbox experience not locked to a single store or tied to one device." The tech giant has established a strategic multi-year partnership with AMD to co-engineer silicon across multiple gaming devices, including next-generation Xbox consoles for both living rooms and handheld gaming. This collaboration aims to deliver advanced graphics innovation and AI-enhanced gameplay while maintaining full compatibility with existing Xbox game libraries. Xbox breaks free from console-only gaming model Bond emphasized that Microsoft's vision centers on creating a gaming platform that follows players across all devices. The announcement comes days after Microsoft revealed its partnership with Asus to launch Xbox Ally handheld devices featuring a new full-screen Xbox experience running on Windows. This Windows-based approach allows access to multiple game stores, including Steam , signaling Microsoft's commitment to platform openness. Xbox + AMD: Powering the Next Generation of Xbox "This is all about building a gaming platform that's always with you, so you can play the games you want across devices anywhere you want," Bond stated. The company is working closely with its Windows team to position Windows as the premier gaming platform, supporting multiple storefronts and device types. Next-gen Xbox to preserve entire game library Microsoft has confirmed that next-generation Xbox consoles will maintain full backward compatibility with existing Xbox game libraries, addressing concerns raised after the Xbox Ally announcement. Unlike the Windows-based Xbox Ally devices, which can only run Xbox games with PC counterparts, the next-gen consoles will support the entire Xbox catalog. The partnership with AMD will focus on advancing gaming silicon technology to unlock deeper visual quality and immersive experiences enhanced by artificial intelligence. Microsoft's hardware investment spans consoles, handhelds, PC gaming, cloud services, and accessories, representing a comprehensive approach to next-generation gaming across multiple form factors and distribution channels. 7 Things You May Have Missed in the GTA 6 Second Trailer AI Masterclass for Students. Honda Succeeds In Reusable Rocket Test, Aims At 2029 For Spaceflight

Honda succeeded in a launch and landing test of its prototype reusable rocket on Tuesday, the Japanese company said in a surprise announcement, marking a milestone towards its 2029 goal of achieving a suborbital spaceflight. Honda R&D, the research arm of Japan's second-biggest carmaker, successfully landed its 6.3-metre (20.6-foot) experimental reusable launch vehicle after reaching an altitude of 271 metres (889 feet) at its test facility in northern Japan's space town Taiki, according to the company. While "no decisions have been made regarding commercialization of these rocket technologies, Honda will continue making progress in the fundamental research with a technology development goal of realizing technological capability to enable a suborbital launch by 2029," it said in a statement. Honda in 2021 said it was studying space technologies such as reusable rockets, but it has not previously announced the details of the launch test. A suborbital launch may touch the verge of outer space but does not enter orbit. Studying launch vehicles "has the potential to contribute more to people's daily lives by launching satellites with its own rockets, that could lead to various services that are also compatible with other Honda business," the company added. Reusable launch vehicles have been the driver of emerging commercial space missions over the past decade, led by SpaceX's Falcon 9, while its U.S. rivals including Blue Origin and companies in China and Europe also have reusable rocket plans. Tokyo-based startup Innovative Space Carrier last month said it will test-launch a prototype reusable rocket in the United States in December using an American engine. Honda's rival Toyota, the world's biggest automaker by sales, earlier this year announced an investment by its research arm in Taiki-based rocket maker Interstellar Technologies to support mass production of launch vehicles. Japan's government has established a multibillion-dollar space venture fund to subsidise private rockets, satellites and other missions, targeting to double its space industry's size to 8 trillion yen ($55.20 billion) by the early 2030s. UGRO Capital to acquire Profectus Capital in a ₹1,400 crore all-cash deal

Mumbai: UGRO Capital, a data-tech MSME (micro, small and medium enterprises) lending platform, is set to acquire Profectus Capital Pvt. Ltd from UK-based private equity firm Actis' companies Actis PC (Mauritius) and Actis Investment (Mauritius) in an all-cash deal amounting to ₹ 1,400 crore, the lender notified the exchanges late on Tuesday. UGRO will use the proceeds from the recent equity raise for the acquisition, with the objective of deploying capital into a 'fully secured asset portfolio delivering instant scale benefits with zero origination costs,' it said in a release. Profectus' secured lending business complements and aligns with UGRO's data-driven underwriting platform. 'To facilitate the discharge of purchase consideration for the proposed acquisition, the company is proposing to add financing of Profectus' acquisition as an object of the existing preferential issuance of compulsorily convertible debentures by seeking fresh approval from the board and shareholders,' UGRO said adding the deal is also subject to the approval of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and shareholders. InCred Capital acted as advisor to UGRO Capital on this acquisition, and SNG & Partners was the legal counsel. PriceWaterHouse Coopers Services LLP was appointed for financial due diligence, and Legacy Growth Partners for tax due diligence. DC Advisory and Avendus were the advisors for Profectus. After the acquisition, Profectus will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of UGRO Capital, and is estimated to add around ₹ 150 crore of annualized profit to UGRO, it said, adding that this makes it a 'capital adequacy accretive transaction'. The companies expect significant geographic and product alignment in secured LAP (loans against property), machinery finance, and supply chain finance, which is seen as driving operational efficiencies. 'This strategically priced acquisition deploys our equity raise to achieve instant scale and ₹ 115 crore cost savings and annualized incremental profitability of ₹ 150 crore, thus boosting ROA (return on assets) by 0.6–0.7%,' said Shachindra Nath, founder and managing director of UGRO Capital. As of March 2025, Profectus had assets under management of ₹ 3,468 crore and a presence across seven states through a 28-branch network and over 800-member team. The company's gross non-performing assets (NPA) ratio is 1.6%, and its net NPA is 1.1%. Acquiring company UGRO's AUM is expected to increase 29% post-deal, which is expected to help diversify its portfolio and accelerate expansion of the high-yield 'emerging markets' and 'embedded finance' business lines. The deal will also add a new product to the company's bouquet—school finance—where UGRO sees a medium-term financing potential of ₹ 2,000 crore, the company said. As of March 2025, UGRO Capital had assets of ₹ 12,003 crore, up 33% on the previous year. Net disbursements for the year were 57% higher at ₹ 2.436 crore. The lender posted a profit after tax of ₹ 40.5 crore for the year. The company's gross NPA ratio was 2.3%, and its net NPA ratio was 1.6% as of the end of FY25. UGRO is a major player in the co-lending market in India with relationships with 17 banks and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs). A sizeable 42% of the company's AUM is off-balance sheet through co-lending and co-originating partners. The NBFC raised ₹ 900 crore of equity capital in 2018, another ₹ 340 crore in 2023 and ₹ 1,265 crore in 2024. The company aims to capture 1% market share over the next three years.
