University of Florida President Pick Santa Ono Rejected After DEI Backlash

Florida state university leaders voted to reject Santo Ono as president of the University of Florida, following Republican backlash over the former University of Michigan president's previous support for diversity programs. The State University System's board of governors took the action Tuesday — voting 10 to 6 — after Ono was questioned for several hours about his position on DEI and other issues at a contentious meeting in Orlando. He was the sole finalist for the position that would have paid him as much as $3 million annually. The Board of Trustees of the University of Florida, the state's flagship, selected him for the job in May.

United Airlines and JetBlue Airways Announce Major News on Thursday

United Airlines will, finally, return to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport thanks to a new groundbreaking partnership with JetBlue Airways. The two airline companies on Thursday announced the partnership dubbed Blue Sky, "a new and unique collaboration that gives customers of both airlines even more options to find flights that fit their plans as well as new opportunities to earn and use MileagePlus miles and TrueBlue points across both airlines." The companies shared that, with some benefits beginning as early as this fall, United's MileagePlus customers will be able to earn and use miles on most JetBlue flights. That's huge news for frequent fliers in and out of JFK, as the partnership means JetBlue will provide United access to slots at JFK for up to seven daily round-trip flights out of Terminal 6. Flights there begin as early as 2027. And, as part of a "net-neutral exchange," JetBlue and United will exchange eight flight timings at Newark. What's more, MileagePlus customers can earn and use miles on most JetBlue flights, and JetBlue's TrueBlue members can earn and use points for flights on United's extensive domestic and international network. That network includes popular destinations like Cape Town and booking process will also be simple, as each airline will offer flights on one another's website and app to complement their offerings. Then there's the benefits of each airline's loyalty program -- like priority boarding and complimentary access to same-day standby/switch -- which will be available when customers travel on the other airline's aircraft, the companies announced. The partnership's will prove to be mutually beneficial. As CNBC reports, JetBlue had long been wanting to partner with a carrier to compete against bigger carriers, and United had been looking to find its way back to JFK. United left JFK in 2015 and moved its flights out of Newark, NJ. United briefly returned in 2021 before leaving again the following year because it failed to secure long-term slots. "It makes each airline more competitive," said United CEO Scott Kirby in a CNBC interview. The one, albeit minor, catch -- the deal is subject to regulatory review. JetBlue's Latest Big Partnership Isn't With Another Airline

JetBlue is teaming up with Brightline, the nation's first private, intercity rail operator. As part of the new initiative, JetBlue customers will be able to book itineraries that feature both a flight and a train trip. As The Points Guy reports, JetBlue's new collaboration with Brightline arrives after the New York based airline announced a new partnership with United Airlines. "This partnership enables travelers to book a single ticket for both air and rail, offering a fast, reliable, and eco-friendly rail transportation option while seamlessly connecting to JetBlue's extensive network," Barbara Drahl, Brightline senior vice president of marketing and commercial strategy, said in an official statement Tuesday. As part of the new collab, JetBlue-Brightline connections will include complimentary shuttle service between airports and nearby stations. Whether you're flying in coach or opting for JetBlue's premium cabin, passengers can expect product overlap. On air and rail bookings, passengers flying via JetBlue economy tickets will shift to a standard "Smart" fare on Brightline, while passengers flying Mint will then shift into Brightline's premium cars. "Together we're expanding transportation options for all of our customers to get to where they want to go, whether they're starting their journey, heading to their final destination, or adjusting plans along the way," said Dave Jehn, JetBlue's vice president of network planning and airline partnerships, in a statement announcing the news. JetBlue's new initiative with Brightline arrives two years after the latter extended its Florida rail service, linking the Sunshine State's coast with the terminals at Orlando International Airport (MCO). The train runs from Orlando to Miami, with intermediate stops in West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Ft. Lauderdale, and Aventura. It reaches speeds of up to 125 miles per hour, the fastest train in North America aside from Amtrak's Acela service.
