How NRL star Kalyn Ponga could jump ship and represent New Zealand - despite previously playing for Australia and Origin for Queensland
NRL superstar Kalyn Ponga could switch allegiances to New Zealand if he chooses to after the International Rugby League (IRL) tribunal allowed fellow NRL star AJ Brimson to change his international eligibility from Australia to England.
It means Gold Coast Titans five-eighth Brimson - who was born in Brisbane and has English heritage via his mother - is likely to feature in the Ashes series later this year against the Kangaroos.
Brimson played the last of his four Origin games for Queensland in 2023, but is unlikely to feature this year ahead of the likes of Cameron Munster and Tom Dearden in the halves.
Like Ponga, Brimson was part of Australia's successful World Cup Nines squad in 2019.
Previously, wearing the green and gold in the tournament was why Ponga couldn't represent New Zealand.
Ponga's international future became clouded last year after he controversially made himself unavailable for the Kangaroos ahead of the Pacific Championships.
But the latest ruling involving Brimson could be a gamechanger for the Knights fullback.
'At the time, the 9s World Cup was part of IRL's calendar planning and it was intended to be held every four years,' an IRL statement read.
'However, the tournament has effectively been discontinued and is not part of IRL's medium term planning.
'Therefore, the tribunal felt that players who had played in the 2019 World Cup 9s were being unfairly restricted as they elected for their country based on a different set of circumstances to players who elect for a country through a 13-a-side match.'
In what would be a bombshell move, Ponga may down the track wear a New Zealand jersey as his father Andre was born there.
However, opting to play for the Kiwis would rule him out of further Origin appearances with Queensland.
'My (New Zealand roots) a very important part of my heritage. It's who I am,' Ponga said previously.
'It's the values and morals embedded in me through my uncles and my dad.'
Ponga also stated if he ever was to switch footy codes and play rugby, he would choose the All Blacks over the Wallabies.

All the Welsh people to be given honours by the King
A total of 65 Welsh people have been recognised by the King in his 2025 birthday honours list. Those nominated range from people who have dedicated their lives to the NHS, public service, sport and education among others. This year's awards acknowledge exceptional contributions by individuals in their sector, particularly highlighting community champions and acts of selfless giving. The list for Wales includes a Knighthood for The Rt. Hon. Mark Tami, Member of Parliament for Alyn and Deeside. for his Political and Public service work. Earlier this week Rugby League player Billy Boston from Cardiff also received a Knighthood for his services to the sport, becoming the first Rugby League player to receive the honour. He received the accolade earlier due to concerns about his health. Billy has not been officially included in the list of Welsh people provided by the UK Government's Wales office due to living in Wigan at the time of the award. Among those honoured is ITV Cymru Wales weather presenter Ruth Dodsworth for her services to victims and survivors of domestic abuse. Speaking after receiving the award, Ruth said: "It feels all a bit surreal and completely unbelievable, and I'm over the moon. It's just the biggest honour I think I have ever had in my entire life. "This is not just for me this is for my family, my friends and everybody who has been on this very strange journey that I've been on, everybody who has supported me. "And this is for everybody who is going on journeys of their own as well because it's not easy and domestic abuse is out there and it's everywhere. "That's why this honour is also so important because it allows me to keep that conversation going. I'm going to use it wisely and then hopefully one day we won't have to talk about domestic abuse because it won't be an issue anymore. "But until that point, this honour is for everybody who has been affected by domestic abuse and I'm just so proud." Big Bash coup as Pakistan superstar Babar Azam agrees to maiden tournament in Australia
Babar Azam will join the Sydney Sixers this summer as one of the biggest signings in Big Bash League history. Generally regarded among the greatest batters of modern times, the Pakistani right-hander will be available for the entirety of his first BBL summer. Azam has signed with the Sixers under BBL rules that permit each side to sign one international player before the overseas draft is held on June 19. The 30-year-old joins the likes of Chris Gayle and Faf du Plessis in the pantheon of great international batters to have taken part in the BBL. 'We are absolutely delighted to welcome Babar to the Sixers this summer,' said Sixers general manager Rachael Haynes.'He is a world-class player and a proven leader. He's not only a huge addition to our club, but to the league as a whole.' Azam's inclusion comes after his standing in the Pakistani white-ball set-up has waned in recent times, with the veteran dropped from the T20I team last year and yet to regain his place. Still, no one has scored more Twenty20 International half-centuries than Azam's 39, and he has also played more T20Is for Pakistan -128 - than any other man. Azam remains the fastest man to reach 5000 one-day international runs, achieving the feat in 97 innings, and was the fastest to 2500 T20I runs in 62 knocks. He captained Pakistan in all three formats between 2019 and 2024, notably leading the side to the 2022 T20 World Cup final. Azam is also a mainstay of the international white-ball circuit with stints in Pakistan, the Caribbean and the United Kingdom.
