Dubai Police arrested 222 beggars during Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr

Dubai Police apprehended 222 beggars of various nationalities during Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr holidays, as part of its ongoing 'Combat Begging' campaign.
The campaign, held under the slogan 'An Aware Society, Free of Begging,' was launched in partnership with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, Dubai Municipality, Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD), and Al Ameen Service, with the aim of raising public awareness and preserving the UAE's civilised image by curbing and preventing begging.
Colonel Ahmad Al Adidi, Acting Director of the Department of Suspects and Criminal Phenomena, noted that the campaign has proven highly effective year after year due to the strict legal measures taken against offenders.

He reported that 33 of the 222 beggars were apprehended specifically during Eid Al Fitr.
He explained that Dubai Police develops an annual comprehensive security plan to combat begging by intensifying patrols in locations where beggars are commonly found and monitoring emerging methods to continuously adapt enforcement efforts.
Colonel Al Adidi warned that many beggars exploit the charitable spirit of Ramadan and festive seasons, often resorting to fraudulent tactics including the use of children, individuals with disabilities, or fabricated medical conditions to gain sympathy.
Multiple cases involving women begging with children have been recorded.
Al Adidi further stated that professional and organised begging practices are criminal offences punishable by law, especially when conducted in places of worship or during religious celebrations.
Captain Abdullah Khamis, Head of the Anti-Begging Section, added that the campaign targets both traditional and non-traditional begging, including electronic begging, fake fundraising for foreign mosque construction, and fabricated humanitarian appeals.
He said: 'The campaign's core objective is to protect society from crimes related to both street and online begging and uphold the UAE's reputation as a civilised and secure nation'.

Dubai Police make Eid Al Adha special for female inmates and their kids

Dubai Police are making an effort to include female inmates and their children in Eid Al Adha celebrations this year by distributing clothing and organising special programmes as part of their ongoing humanitarian and social efforts. The gift-giving is part of the 'You Made Me Happy' initiative at the Women's Prison aimed at "uplifting the spirits of the inmates and their children," Dubai Police said on Thursday, ahead of first day of Eid Al Adha. 'Aside from gift distribution, there were also entertainment programmes for children, creating a warm, family-like atmosphere filled with positivity," Dubai Police said in a statement sent to Khaleej Times, adding, "(The initiative) was aimed at "spreading joy and reinforcing values of tolerance and compassion." 'This initiative, now in its 11th consecutive year, is a clear testament to Dubai Police's commitment to the vision of our wise leadership in building a compassionate and cohesive society,' said Col Jamila Al Zaabi, director of the Women's Prison. 'We prioritise humanitarian aspects of our work, especially concerning children and female inmates. We want everyone - even those inside correctional facilities - to feel included and entitled to joy and hope,' she added. "(We) adopt a holistic humanitarian approach to managing female inmates, extending beyond correctional aspects to include emotional and social support, upholding their dignity and rights,' Col Al Zaabi continued. 'The Eid clothing distribution is not just a gesture but a message of hope, a reminder that they and their children are not forgotten,' she underscored.

UAE, Ireland reaffirm cooperation following extradition case

The UAE and Ireland have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening legal cooperation after the extradition of an Irish national accused of murder and links to a criminal network. Sean McGovern, who is believed to be part of the Irish Kinahan criminal network, was arrested in Dubai in October 2024 after an Interpol Red Notice was issued. According to reports, McGovern was flown to Dublin on May 29 on an Irish military aircraft. It was in October 2024 that the UAE and Ireland signed two agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation in extradition and legal assistance. During a phone call, UAE Minister of Justice, Abdullah bin Sultan Al Nuaimi, and his Irish counterpart Jim O'Callaghan said the successful extradition demonstrates a firm and ongoing commitment to upholding the rule of law. "It highlights our joint dedication to ensuring that criminal prosecutions may be brought against those who attempt to evade justice," the ministers said in a joint statement. The ministers also praised the efforts of Dubai Police and An Garda Síochána, Ireland's national police service, for their close cooperation in the case. They acknowledged the importance of continued police-to-police engagement to counter the global threat of organised crime.
