YOUTUBE'S first-ever video was uploaded 20 years ago today: a 19-second clip with more than 355 million views.
The snippet of footage dates back to YouTube's April 23, 2005 launch.

It's called "Me at the zoo" and it was uploaded by
YouTube
co-founder Jawed Karim.
This early clip is a now seen as an iconic part of the internet's
history
– and marks the beginning of one of the most popular websites of all time.
These days, YouTube is a household name, and is owned by tech giant Google.
But in 2005, it was just a hopeful project dreamed up by three former PayPal employees Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Karim (who uploaded that first clip).

In the video, we see Karim posing in front of a pair of elephants.
He's being recorded by his high school pal Kayov Lapitsky at California's San Diego Zoo.
TUBE GOOD TO BE TRUE?
Karim worked with YouTube as an informal adviser, and retained a small share in the site.
When it was snapped up by
Google
in 2006, Karim is believed to have received around $64 million in share value.

In 2013, Karim used his "Me at the zoo" video to criticise Google publicly.

It was in response to a policy change that forced YouTube users to create a Google+ account if they wanted to post comments on videos.
Karim changed the video description on the clip to: "I can't comment here anymore, since I don't want a Google+ account."
Google eventually backed down on the decision, and ultimately killed off Google+ in 2019.
In November 2021, Karim updated his video description again with the note: "When every YouTuber agrees that removing dislikes is a stupid idea, it probably is. Try again, YouTube."

As of today, Karim's video description includes a warning about how "microplastics are accumulating in human brains at an alarming rate".
That change was made back in February 2025.

Rapper Yung Filly faces two new sexual assault charges
British rapper Yung Filly has faced additional charges over allegations he sexually assaulted a woman while on tour in Australia. The internet personality, real name Andres Felipe Valencia Barrientos, appeared before Perth District Court on Friday. In March, he pleaded not guilty to three counts of assault occasioning bodily harm, one of strangulation and four counts of sexual penetration without consent. Court documents filed on Friday revealed he faced two new counts of sexual penetration without consent. No plea has been entered for the two new charges. His case is listed for a 10-day trial starting on 20 July 2026. The online star has been on bail since October 2024 after allegedly sexually assaulting a woman aged in her 20s in his hotel room after he performed at a venue in Hillarys, a coastal suburb of Perth, the previous month. During his initial court hearing in October, Barrientos was granted bail with strict conditions. Court documents revealed Barrientos pleaded guilty to a reckless driving charge on 5 December. The social media star was clocked driving at more than 96mph on the Roe Highway near the Perth suburb of High Wycombe on 17 November. Barrientos has appeared on several BBC shows and is known for collaborating with the YouTube collective Beta Squad. The rapper, who was on tour in Australia, has appeared for England on Soccer Aid and The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer on Channel 4. Among his other shows, he hosted BBC series Hot Property and Munya And Filly Get Chilly with comedian Munya Chawawa, a spin-off show of Freeze The Fear With Wim Hof. But just where did Ms Rachel come from, and how did she find fame? Ms Rachel's real name is Rachel Griffin Accurso, and she worked as a music teacher in a public pre-school in New York before starting her YouTube channel. The Songs for Littles channel was created after she discovered there were barely any resources for her son, who had a speech delay. The tunes, made up from classic children's songs and nursery rhymes, with a twist, were composed by Rachel and her husband - Broadway composer Aron Accurso. She also started on TikTok, where she acquired over two and a half million followers by March 2023. She has also faced her fair share of controversy, such as when she offered to sell Cameo videos to raise money for Save the Children - mentioning the Gaza Strip, Sudan, Ukraine, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Rachel said she was "bullied online" for the move, and has since disabled comments on some of her Instagram, TikTok and YouTube posts. The highly-anticipated Ms Rachel toys were released in September, and are expected to be one of the biggest sellers this Christmas. To which she replied: "Just once!"
