‘Proud of you, son': Ronaldo Jr earns first Portugal U-15 call-up, dad celebrates

Malay Mail07-05-2025

LISBON, May 7 — The next chapter of the Ronaldo legacy began yesterday when Cristiano Jr received his first call-up to Portugal's Under-15 squad, marking the start of what could become football's most compelling father-son succession story.
The 14-year-old forward, currently developing at Al-Nassr's youth academy in Saudi Arabia, will join Portugal for a tournament in Croatia this month, facing Japan, Greece and England in his first taste of international football.
'Proud of you, son,' wrote 40-year-old Portugal captain Ronaldo on social media, sharing the squad announcement.
The five-times Ballon d'Or winner, who led Portugal to the 2016 European Championship title, has scored a world record 136 goals in 219 internationals and will watch with parental pride as his eldest son looks to tread a similar path.
Ronaldo Jr has already followed in his father's footsteps at club level, having played in the youth teams of the Portugal great's former clubs Real Madrid, Juventus and Manchester United, before moving to Saudi Arabia with his family.
The teenager reportedly netted 58 goals during his stint in Italy, while clips of Ronaldo Jr mimicking his father's trademark 'Siu' celebration at Al-Nassr have gone viral.
In 2022, Ronaldo said his son was eager to one day share the pitch with him. 'My son tells me, 'Dad, hold on a few more years, I want to play with you!'' he revealed at the time.
Despite Ronaldo Jr being born in the US and spending much of his early childhood in Spain — granting him eligibility for three nations — his call-up by Portugal is likely an indication of his future international allegiance.
For a country whose modern football identity has been shaped by his father's remarkable two-decade reign, Ronaldo Jr's inclusion in Portugal's under-15 squad could be the first step in a generational succession that will capture headlines. — Reuters

Man City sign Ait-Nouri in £31m deal ahead of Club World Cup squad rebuild

MANCHESTER, June 10 — Manchester City completed the signing of left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves on Monday for a reported £31 million (RM178 million). The 24-year-old Algeria international has signed a five-year contract and will be available for the Club World Cup, which begins later this week. Ait-Nouri is expected to be just one of a trio of new City faces for that tournament with deals close to completion for AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders and Lyon playmaker Rayan Cherki. After missing out on a major trophy in the recently completed season for the first time since 2016/17, City are hoping to bounce back quickly with a major overhaul of Pep Guardiola's squad. They also spent more than £172 million in January on Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Nico Gonzalez. City will face Moroccan side Wydad AC and Emirati club Al Ain before a clash of European heavyweights with Juventus in the group stage, which kicks off on June 14. 'City are one of the biggest clubs in the world and the chance to play for the club is a dream come true,' Ait-Nouri said in a club statement. 'I am also so excited about working with and learning from Pep (Guardiola) and his coaching team and getting to train and play alongside such a world class group of players.' Ait-Nouri spent five years at Wolves, initially arriving on loan from Angers before signing permanently for £14.9m in 2021. He is City's first left-back specialist since Benjamin Mendy, who played his final game for the club almost four years ago. Oleksandr Zinchenko, Joao Cancelo, Nathan Ake, Josko Gvardiol and Nico O'Reilly have been among the players to fill a problem position for Guardiola since. French media report Cherki is on the verge of signing a five-year deal with Guardiola hoping to wrap up the forecast €40 million five-year signing by Tuesday evening in order to field the 21-year-old at the Club World Cup. — AFP

World Cup 2026 host cities say fans ‘welcome'

Eleven US cities will host most 2026 World Cup games, co-hosted by three nations and expanded to 48 teams. (Fifa pic) NEW YORK : American World Cup host city officials assured Monday that overseas fans would be welcome at next year's tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico despite 'uncertainty' amid ongoing concerns over visas, border controls and social unrest. In a briefing in New York that came just over a year from the opening game of the tournament on June 11, 2026, officials said President Donald Trump's administration remained 'extremely supportive' of the World Cup. Since returning to power, Trump has started a global trade war, threatened to annex Canada and launched a border crackdown that has led to harsh treatment of foreign visitors attempting to enter the US. Trump's immigration offensive has in turn led to civil unrest, with clashes in Los Angeles over the weekend triggered by large-scale raids last week. Eleven American cities will host the bulk of the games at next year's World Cup, which is being co-hosted by three nations for the first time and has been expanded to include 48 teams. Executives from the local organising committees for the 11 US World Cup venues gathered in New York on Monday to brief on logistical aspects of the tournament, including transportation, stadium access, fan zones as well as general access to the US. 'For each of our cities, we want to be prepared to make any person that is coming and makes the decision to come to the US or come to this World Cup feel that they are welcome,' said Meg Kane, head of the Philadelphia organising committee. Kane said while officials were planning 'within uncertainty' due to matters taking place at national and international level, the Trump administration was firmly behind the tournament. 'We do not play a role necessarily in what is happening in terms of the decisions that are made,' Kane said. 'What we can say is that the current administration – while there are certain situations that we are monitoring closely – has been extremely supportive of Fifa World Cup.' Alex Lasry, the chief executive of the New York/New Jersey World Cup committee said officials were bracing for 'millions' of fans inside and outside the stadiums irrespective of the political climate. 'I think sports transcends geopolitics,' Lasry told AFP. 'I think we've seen that for Olympics. We've seen it for other World Cups, in Qatar or Russia. 'People want to come to these mega sporting events, and they're going to travel to ensure that they're able to cheer on and see their team play. 'Our job as a host committee is to make sure that we are putting on an event and making sure that our city and our region is ready to welcome everyone who's able to come to the World Cup,' added Lasry, who was previously an assistant secretary for tourism in president Joe Biden's government. Los Angeles World Cup committee vice-president Jason Krutzsch said organisers were working to ensure fans 'understand that they are welcome in Los Angeles and will have an amazing World Cup experience.' 'We're working closely with the administration,' Krutzsch said adding that Trump's World Cup Task Force was established to 'make sure that we can welcome fans from around the world and deliver an exceptional experience.' As well as hosting games at the World Cup, Los Angeles will also stage the Super Bowl in 2027 before hosting the 2028 Olympics. 'We really want to make sure that 2026 goes well,' Krutzsch said. 'We're really focused on delivering an exceptional experience in 2026 for the world. 'But they're also learning opportunities (…) to be successful in 2028.'
