Google Shifts Gears: 25% Layoffs Hit Google TV as AI and YouTube Take Priority

In a move signalling a deeper shift in priorities, Google has reportedly laid off nearly a quarter of its Google TV team. The restructuring comes as the tech giant doubles down on artificial intelligence and reimagines YouTube as a premium streaming destination. According to a report by The Information, Google has slashed 10 percent of the budget allocated to its Google TV division. With an estimated 300 people on the team, this reduction translates to about 75 jobs being cut. While Google has not officially confirmed the numbers, sources familiar with the situation suggest the layoffs are part of a broader realignment of company resources. These internal changes are unfolding just as Google prepares to integrate its powerful Gemini AI model into the TV experience. The model promises to enhance user interaction through smarter, more personalized voice responses—effectively turning the television into a more intuitive, assistant-like device. It's a bold step in the company's vision for the smart home. Despite the layoffs, Google insists that it continues to view television as a vital platform. The company is still investing in AI features designed to modernize how people use their TVs. 'We want the TV experience to be more helpful, voice-friendly, and AI-powered,' a source close to the matter said. However, the reduced budget could slow down rollout timelines or limit innovation in specific areas. Google TV, currently available on a wide range of devices including Chromecast and smart TVs from TCL and Hisense, may face uncertainty in terms of development velocity. Industry analysts believe the platform won't be abandoned but may evolve more slowly than initially anticipated. At the same time, Google appears to be shifting substantial focus toward YouTube. The company is reportedly working on a significant redesign that would make the platform resemble streaming heavyweights like Netflix and Disney+. This could include expanded options for paid content, exclusive shows, and a sleeker user interface aimed at enhancing viewer retention and revenue. Another layer to the story is the company's changing workplace culture. In April, CNBC reported that some remote employees were asked to return to physical offices at least three times per week—or risk termination. At the time, a Google spokesperson said, 'Working together in person helps solve problems more effectively,' reinforcing the company's belief that innovation thrives in collaborative settings. While the layoffs at Google TV are raising eyebrows, the company maintains it is still hiring in select regions and verticals. The message is clear: Google is not downsizing indiscriminately but is instead reallocating its resources toward strategic priorities like AI and the streaming experience. As the tech industry increasingly embraces artificial intelligence and digital content, Google's latest move may be a sign of what's to come for many large players—streamlining operations to make room for smarter, more scalable technologies.

UK may compel Google to change search rankings, offer alternatives

Britain's competition regulator said it may force Google to rank businesses more fairly in search results and offer alternative services to consumers, marking the first use of expanded powers to oversee the world's biggest tech companies. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is proposing to designate Alphabet-owned Google with "strategic market status", it said on Tuesday, giving it more power to intervene in search services to increase innovation and economic growth. If confirmed in October, the designation could compel Google to enhance transparency for publishers, simplify access to rival search services including artificial intelligence assistants, and facilitate data portability for competitors. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Philippines: Jewelry On Sale For Half Price! "Proportionate, evidence-based regulation will be essential to preventing the CMA's roadmap from becoming a roadblock to growth in the UK," said Oliver Bethell, Google's senior director for competition. Live Events CMA Chief Executive Sarah Cardell said Google, which accounts for more than 90% of search queries in Britain, had delivered tremendous benefits but the regulator had found ways to make markets more competitive and innovative. Millions of Britons relied on Google as a gateway to the internet and more than 200,000 businesses depended on Google search advertising to reach their customers, the regulator said. The CMA, which gained global prominence when Britain left the European Union , aims to use its expanded power to rein in the power of tech giants such as Google, Apple, Meta and Microsoft without stifling investment or growth. The CMA's targeted approach contrasts with the EU's broader enforcement of digital regulations, as Britain seeks to balance curbing the dominance of tech giants with fostering economic growth post-Brexit. New powers Cardell said the CMA had set out a roadmap of changes the company could make ahead of a final decision in October. Google said on Tuesday that the CMA's SMS designation did not imply anti-competitive behaviours, but that it presented clear challenges to critical areas of its business in Britain. The development and adoption of generative AI has the potential to upend the search market that Google dominates. The CMA said that Google was already incorporating generative AI features - such as AI Overviews - into its search products and developing its own assistant, Gemini . Its proposed designation would include AI-based search features, although not Gemini AI Assistant itself, adding that this would be kept under review as usage evolved, the regulator said. The CMA said it planned further action to address more complex issues, starting in 2026, such as concerns about Google's treatment of rival specialised search firms and transparency and control in search advertising. The regulator's second investigation under its new powers into mobile operating systems also targets Google, as well as Apple. It could see the company receive another designation focused on its Android operating system. The CMA can impose fines for non-compliance and has direct enforcement powers. Google has been subject to increasing regulatory scrutinyin the United States and the European Union, spanning search, advertising, AI, and digital platform practices. Over the past year it was found to have monopolised search and online ads in two major U.S. rulings, and it was charged in March by the European Commission with breaching landmark EU digital rules.

Samsung One UI 8 Beta Version Coming To Galaxy S24 Models This Month

Last Updated: Samsung One UI 8 beta program is moving quickly which means the older Galaxy phones and foldables should be getting it in the next few weeks. Samsung One UI 8 beta program has already started in select regions and soon the company will offer the Android 16-based version for the Galaxy S24 users along with older Galaxy Z Fold users. New reports claim the One UI 8 beta update will be coming to these devices by the end of this month. The One UI 7 update was delayed beyond everyone's expectations and was released with the Galaxy S25 series in January this year. But the company is looking to avoid those issues with One UI 8 and these beta program extensions suggest the plan is moving at the right pace. The details about how Samsung plans to bring One UI 8 beta to more devices has been shared by a tipster named Tony Tech on X. The post claims Samsung will bring the One UI 8 beta version to Galaxy S24 series models which includes the S24 Plus, S24 Ultra as well as the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 models. The roll out could start as early as this week for these devices. He further points out that even the Galaxy S23 series models along with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 versions should get the One UI beta version by the end of June. And he wraps up the One UI 8 beta schedule by talking about the Galaxy S22 series along with Galaxy Z Fold 4/Flip 4 variants getting the Android 16 version in early July. Google has already moved to the final phase of the Android 16 release which will be getting the design overhaul later this year. The One UI 7 upgrade was Samsung's biggest in terms of the design UI overhaul, but the One UI 8 version is likely to see incremental changes, which seems to have helped its cause and offer a faster OS rollout this year. We will wait for the company to share the official timelines but the details seem fairly believable. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 are launching on July 9 and will be the first to get the One UI 8 update out of the box. Before that, the company wants to ensure that the platform is stable, bug-free and the features work as expected. First Published:
