Kasper Yuen's top pick: Edward E Gordon and David Ramsay's Divided on D-Day

I highly recommend the book Divided on D-Day, written by Edward E Gordon, a history teacher at DePaul University in Chicago, and David Ramsay, whose father, Sir Admiral Bertram Ramsay, was a naval commander on D-Day.
This book interests me because it tells me how commanders, captains, soldiers, politicians and leaders found ways to lead their people to victory in World War II. For example, Sir Frederick E Morgan thought of a plan for D-Day. However, adjustments were needed so Americam, British and Canadian forces could successfully march in Normandy on D-Day.
Though they could move on to liberate other countries, the American troops faced tough challenges in Utah Beach and Omaha Beach. It was the lack of cooperation between the leaders that affected D-Day.
Here is an interesting side note about this book. It is perfect for people who cannot fall asleep. Once, when my dad tried to read this book before reached the fifth paragraph on a page, I could already hear him snoring like a pig.

Canadian wildfire smoke reaches Europe; hazy skies over Paris expected
Heavy smoke from intense wildfires in Canada has reached northwestern Europe , the European Union 's climate monitoring service said on Tuesday. The huge plumes are at a very high altitude and do not pose an immediate health risk, it said in a statement. 'Smoke originating from the wildfires in the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan has been transported across the Atlantic,' the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) said. Satellites tracked the smoke in mid-May, with some plumes reaching as far east as Greece and the eastern Mediterranean. 'A second, much larger, smoke plume crossed the Atlantic during the last week of May, reaching northwestern parts of Europe on June 1,' CAMS said. Additional plumes are expected to shade the continent in the coming days.

What is the Genius Act, and can it really cement US dollar supremacy?
At last week's Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas, there was one phrase on everyone's lips: the Genius Act. Advertisement Vice-President J.D. Vance used his speech at the event to urge lawmakers to pass the bill – also known as the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for US Stablecoins Act – which is currently the subject of heated debate on Capitol Hill. 'Dollar-pegged stablecoins, particularly once Genius is enacted, are only going to help the American economy and it's only going to help the American dollar,' Vance said. But what exactly is a stablecoin, what is the Genius Act, and what would it actually mean for the future of the US dollar? The Post breaks down what financial experts are saying about the bill and its implications for the global economy. What is a stablecoin? A stablecoin is a form of cryptocurrency, like bitcoin. But unlike bitcoin, whose value is largely determined by the market, a stablecoin – as the name suggests – is designed to maintain a stable value relative to certain assets, usually a currency.

Will a calmer approach to US-China relations work out for Beijing?
Advertisement Beyond this brief moment in the spotlight, however, Xie has kept a lower profile during Trump's second term, in stark contrast to his predecessors Cui Tiankai and Qin Gang, who actively engaged American audiences to counter negative perceptions of China. At events such as the 2024 Harvard Kennedy School China Conference, despite facing pro-Tibetan protests, he maintained a composed demeanour, emphasising modernisation and cooperation rather than confronting his critics directly, a sharp contrast to Qin's more combative approach. Xie's style aligns more closely with Cui, China's longest-serving ambassador to the US, who was known for his measured, professional approach. Cui, who served as ambassador between 2013 and 2021, adeptly navigated turbulence during the Barack Obama era and Trump's first term, actively engaging US officials and lawmakers, media and think tanks, while forging personal ties with the Trump family. Advertisement Highly regarded in both Beijing and Washington, Cui was viewed as a skilled communicator and an interlocutor who understood American politics.
