Madras HC disqualifies trust chief who usurps temple property for Rs 2,000
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has disqualified the chairman of the trust board of Tiruvannamalai Arunachaleswar temple from being a trustee for 'usurping the temple property for a paltry Rs 2,000, and shamelessly setting up persons and creating false rent receipts.'
The order was passed by Justice D Bharatha Chakravarthy on April 30 on the petitions filed by T S Shankar of Tiruvannamalai alleging illegal occupation of the trust property by the chairman of the trust board, R Jeevanantham, and continuing as the chairman against the rules.
The petitioner accused the chairman of dismantling a 100-year-old heritage building belonging to Kalasanthi Arakkattalai, one of the trusts of the temple, and constructing a building on 1,995 sq ft area after entering into a rental agreement with the trust in 2010.
The land was part of a parcel of 4,400 sq ft. He has been using the space for a rent of Rs 2,000 per month, the petitioner alleged. He had raised the building without obtaining permission from the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department or any other departments, by using his political clout as a leader of the ruling party, the petitioner alleged.

15 new arts and science colleges, but sans fresh recruitment faculty feel the heat in Tamil Nadu
CHENNAI: As announced in this year's budget, the state has inaugurated 11 new arts and science colleges for 2025-26 and CM MK Stalin said four more colleges will be opened soon. However, no fresh recruitment of staff, particularly teaching faculty, has irked the staff members who are already working in government arts and science colleges across the state. The higher education department will be spending around Rs 25.27 crore in the first year for running the 11 colleges, each of which will offer five new courses and admit 280 students. Though the department has created 12 teaching posts in each of these colleges for this year, the staff have not been freshly recruited, instead transferred from other colleges on deputation. Alleging that the 175 government arts and science colleges in Tamil Nadu, including the newly-inaugurated ones, are already facing a staff crunch due to non recruitment in the past 10 years, academicians have urged the government to focus on recruitment instead of running the show by temporary arrangements.

CITU calls for nationwide strike tomorrow
Vijayawada: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has called for a nationwide general strike on July 9, demanding repeal of the new Labor Codes, which they claim as aiming at turning the working class into bonded laborers, and to resolve various demands of employees and workers. CITU State vice-president P Ajay Kumar announced this during an extensive meeting of CITU NTR district committee held on Saturday at the CITU district office in Ranigari Thota here. The meeting was presided over by district president A Venkateswar. Addressing the gathering, Ajay Kumar stated that the Modi government at the Centre introduced the Labor Codes specifically to trample upon the rights of the working class. 'These codes will strip workers of their fundamental rights to form unions, strike, and engage in collective bargaining,' he asserted. He added that the concept of 'fixed-term employment' is merely a ploy to exploit labor by employing workers without protection, thereby benefiting corporations. Kumar urged workers to decisively reject the Labor Codes and demanded the implementation of a minimum wage of Rs 26,000. He also criticised the Chandrababu-led State government for amending the Factories Act to allow 'spread hours,' enabling employers to make workers labor for up to 12 hours a day, and permitting women to work night shifts, calling it an 'atrocious' move. Ajay Kumar demanded that the Telugu Desam government increase minimum wages, establish welfare boards for 'muta' (headload) workers, hawkers, auto, and transport workers.
