Birmingham Legion FC fires head coach Tom Soehn
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The first head coach in Birmingham Legion FC history was fired Wednesday.
The club made the announcement of Tom Soehn's dismissal after Legion FC failed to win in its four contests in its 2025 USL Championship slate, holding a record of 0-2-2. Soehn, who took the head coaching job in August 2018, led the club to 90 wins and 37 draws in 207 matches.
'This was an incredibly difficult decision and one that was not taken lightly, because Tommy played a pivotal role in building the foundation of this club,' said Legion FC Chief Soccer Officer and CEO Jay Heaps in a statement. 'However, results and performances have not progressed, and we felt a change was necessary at this time to move the club forward. We thank Tommy for his hard work and dedication to our organization and wish him and his family the best moving forward.'

Legion FC made the USL Championship Playoffs every season from 2019-23. Soehn's accomplishments with Birmingham include reaching the quarterfinals of the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and defeating Charlotte FC of Major League Soccer in Protective Stadium the same year. The club, however, started its current struggling trend in 2024 when it went 13-6-15 in USL Championship play.
Eric Avila, who was serving as the club's first team assistant coach, is now Birmingham's interim coach. Avila joined the Legion FC coaching staff in 2022 and was a head coach in MLS Next in 2021. Avila competed in 34 contests for Legion FC in 2019.
Avila's first match in that capacity will be Sunday against El Paso Locomotive LC, which is set to start at 4 p.m. in Protective Stadium. The club stated it is conducting a national search to find its next head coach.

Birmingham Stallions vs. Michigan Panthers where to watch: TV channel, start time, odds
Birmingham Stallions vs. Michigan Panthers where to watch: TV channel, start time, odds Show Caption Hide Caption Greg Olsen believes Travis Kelce 'controls how he leaves the game' Former NFL tight end Greg Olsen has high praise for Travis Kelce and shares when he believes Travis Kelce will eventually retire from the NFL. Sports Seriously The Birmingham Stallions haven't lost to the Michigan Panthers in five meetings since the 2024 USFL-XFL merger. Skip Holtz's squad will need to keep that perfect record intact to get back to the UFL championship game. The Stallions and Panthers are set to meet Sunday in the 2025 USFL conference championship game. It will mark the third meeting of the season between the squads, with Birmingham winning the previous two 21-12 and 26-22, respectively. Birmingham and Michigan were the UFL's highest-scoring offenses during the 2025 spring-league season. The Panthers averaged a league-best 24.5 points per game, while the Stallions upped their average to 24.4 points per game thanks to a 46-point outburst in their Week 10 win over the Memphis Showboats. Quarterback play has been a big part of each squad's success. The Panthers got an MVP-level performance from Bryce Perkins when he was healthy during the season. He missed the final three games of the season due to an ankle injury, which allowed Danny Etling to thrive in his stead. Meanwhile, the Stallions dealt with significant injury issues at quarterback, as Alex McGough and Matt Corral both endured long absences after early-season injuries. Eventually, J'Mar Smith came out of retirement to helm Holtz's squad. He thrived in three starts, completing 65% of his passes for 758 yards, six touchdowns and one interception. While this game has the makings of a potential shootout, it's worth noting Birmingham's defense limited Michigan to two of its three lowest scoring outputs of the season. Kyahva Tezino and Bradlee Anae played significant roles in those regular-season wins, so the Stallions will rely on the star linebacker and pass rusher to once again slow down Michigan's dynamic offense. Arsenal: Morgan Rogers, Rodrygo and Gunners' latest plan for overhaul of attack this summer
Arsenal are admirers of Morgan Rogers - but they would face a fight to land the Aston Villa star this summer. The Gunners are in the market for attacking reinforcements during the upcoming transfer window and they want to sign a wide forward, as well as a striker. Advertisement Arsenal are tracking a number of targets and Rogers is believed to be a player that the recruitment team at the club like. A deal for the 22-year-old, however, will be tough to complete as Villa view him as a key part of their plans. Rogers was a top performer for the club last season and finished the campaign with 10 goals and eight assists in 37 Premier League games. The attacking midfielder has shone under Unai Emery and, in December of last year, spoke glowingly about working under him. 'Him (Emery) and Pep [Guardiola] are kind of similar in a way,' Rogers told TNT Sports. 'In terms of the way they structure their teams, in terms of the way that they're so demanding of you, structurally and tactically. Advertisement 'But obviously working closer with Unai Emery than I did obviously with Pep, we've got that relationship where it's like a love-hate kind of thing. Morgan Rogers was a standout performer for Aston Villa last season (REUTERS) 'He wants the best of me. He's going to be demanding. He's going to be on top of me non-stop throughout the week, because he knows my capabilities. 'He knows what I can do. He wants to push me, wants to improve me and that's the best way for me. With me and him, it's perfect.' Arsenal have looked at several attacking targets and they are long-term admirers of Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams. Leroy Sane could be available on a free transfer if he refuses to sign a new contract with Bayern Munich, but his wage demands may prove problematic. Advertisement Rodrygo has also been linked with Arsenal over the past week, however whether he is available this summer will only become clearer once he has held talks with new Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso. If Rodrygo does come on the market, he would likely attract interest from a host of clubs from all over Europe.
