
NASA flew this new device into Hurricane Helene. It could change the future of storm forecasting
This fall, NASA scientist Kris Bedka flew into Hurricane Helene to test a device that uses lasers to create ultradetailed wind measurements. It could be the key to unlocking better storm predictions.
The new device is called the Aerosol Wind Profiler (AWP), and it's been in the works at NASA for about four years. The AWP uses the Doppler effect to create real-time, 3D maps of wind patterns above the Earth's surface—data that, before now, has been much more difficult to capture.
Bedka is the AWP's principal investigator at NASA's Langley Research Center, and he has spent more than 100 hours in the air testing the device in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which runs the National Weather Service (NWS). He believes the AWP could be the missing link in weather agencies' abilities to accurately map severe weather events like hurricanes and thunderstorms.
The shortcomings to current wind data collection
To create predictions for severe weather phenomena, agencies like the NWS collate a vast swath of data including atmospheric temperature, moisture levels, and pressure patterns, typically pulled from satellite readings. Wind patterns, both on the ground and above ground level, are another piece of assembling the overall puzzle.
But when it comes to fitting wind patterns into the model, there are a few limitations. If forecasters need wind measurements close to the Earth, Bedka says, it's fairly simple to take readings using sensors that can be mounted on the ground. But what's most important for weather forecasting is 'having a sense of the three-dimensional picture of the wind—so winds not just at the ground, but many miles above us, which all combine to drive the weather that we experience at the ground,' he says.
Currently, to get a sense of the 3D wind picture, forecasters mainly use weather balloons. These balloons give accurate readings, Bedka says, but there are only around 1,300 launch sites across the globe, meaning their data is fairly limited. Another tool, called geostationary satellites, can use snapshots of cloud cover and atmospheric moisture patterns to calculate wind vectors, but only at the cloud top, meaning that the 3D wind picture is still missing. Many experts believe that tools like the AWP are the ' missing link ' to address this problem.
How the AWP uses lasers to make a 3D wind map
Before making a detailed 3D wind map, scientists need to understand two main factors: how fast wind currents are moving and in what direction. The AWP does that by tracking the movement of particulates—including tiny pieces of cloud matter, dust, smoke, pollution, and sea salt that are all floating in the atmosphere—to see how wind is buffeting them at a given moment in time.
To capture the movement of those particulates, the AWP is mounted to an aircraft with viewing ports underneath it. From there, the instrument emits 200 pulses of laser energy per second toward the atmosphere in two opposite directions, where they scatter and reflect off the particulate matter. This scattering causes a measurable change in the laser pulse wavelength, also known as the Doppler effect.
'You've probably heard of the Doppler effect before, and you've experienced it yourself,' Bedka says. 'You hear an ambulance coming towards you, and at one particular distance, it sounds very high pitched, and then as it comes by you and then goes away from you, you hear the pitch change—that's due to the Doppler effect. A Doppler wind lidar kind of behaves in an analogous way.'
In simple terms, the altered 'frequencies' of laser light that bounce back from particulates give the AWP the information needed to calculate wind speed and direction, even measuring conditions at different altitudes in the atmosphere simultaneously. All of those details can then be stitched together to create a complete 3D wind map.
The AWP flies through Hurricane Helene
In 2022, Bedka says, NOAA solicited new technologies for accurate wind measurement, which had been an ongoing challenge for the agency when trying to predict severe weather. Since Bedka's team had just wrapped up their AWP prototype, they proposed an aircraft flight campaign that would validate the tool's effectiveness.
NOAA agreed to fund the proposal, and last fall, Bedka took flight for over 100 hours in a kind of flying laboratory, installed inside a 1970s-era DC-8 aircraft. The lab came outfitted with NASA's AWP and its High-Altitude Lidar Observatory (HALO), another tool built to measure water vapor, aerosols, and cloud properties. Over the course of the flight campaign, AWP and HALO worked together to create ultradetailed 3D maps of wind patterns and aerosol layers. Bedka was aiming to collect data from as wide a range of weather conditions as possible—and, as it happened, that included Hurricane Helene.
Because Helene was a relatively well-predicted storm, Bedka's team had time to plan a flight route that would allow the AWP to measure 'as close to the storm center and the highest winds that were available to us.' Given the plane's limited six-hour flight range, Bedka and the crew flew through the edges of the hurricane in several legs on September 26, traveling down the western edge of the storm, going around the eye in the Gulf of Mexico, and heading back up the East Coast. In all, it took about nine hours.
Bedka, who has flown in several NASA aircrafts through intense thunderstorms, says the conditions were choppy but not too severe. During the hurricane flight, his team was able to collect a rich database of wind measurements that proved the AWP's potential effectiveness during severe weather.
What's next for the AWP
For now, the AWP is just in testing phases, but NASA is currently working to make it more widely available.
That would involve bringing on an agency or commercial partner, like NOAA, willing to invest further in the technology—ideally, by adapting it for use on smaller satellites rather than flying it up on planes. Currently, the AWP is about the size of a coffee table, but to fit on a vessel set for space, researchers would need to shrink it to about one-tenth its current size, Bedka says. (According to a NASA spokesperson, the AWP project hasn't been impacted by federal budget and staff cuts at NASA and NOAA.)
Ideally, NASA would be able to create a 'constellation' of AWP's orbiting the Earth that could measure winds simultaneously all across the globe. With such a wide swath of data, prediction models for extreme weather would become significantly more accurate.
'Severe storms don't just pop up just out of the clear blue sky on a random day,' Bedka says. 'They form because all the ingredients align in order to make them become as intense as they are. What we're trying to do with this technology is to measure the winds with as much spatial and vertical detail as permitted by laser technology. We've already found that when this data is put into weather prediction models, it has a really big impact.'

President Donald Trump's proposed 2026 budget for the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration would cancel the planned follow-on mission, potentially abandoning the tubes for decades to Martian dust storms. The White House is calling for a roughly 50% cut to NASA's science spending to $3.9 billion, part of an overall pullback that would deliver the lowest funding level in the agency's history and kill more more than 40 NASA science missions and projects, according to detailed plans released last month. The Trump administration has also left the agency without a permanent leader and without a vision for how America's civilian space policy is going to work with US allies and compete with China and other rivals. The cuts would follow a shift in how the American public thinks about space. NASA has long enjoyed a unique place in US culture, with its exploits celebrated by movies, theme parks and merchandise — but companies like Elon Musk's SpaceX have begun to capture more attention. For decades, NASA's scientific undertakings have provided critical groundwork for researchers seeking to understand the structure of the universe, study how planets form and hunt for evidence that life might exist beyond Earth. Pictures from NASA craft like the Hubble Space Telescope and the recently launched James Webb Space Telescope have inspired and delighted millions. Now, the agency's position at the vanguard of discovery is facing foreclosure. Among the other programs set to lose funding are a craft already on its way to rendezvous with an asteroid that's expected to pass close to Earth in 2029, and multiple efforts to map and explore the acidic clouds of Venus. Researchers worry that abandoning missions would mean investments made by earlier generations might be lost or forgotten. 'Once you launch and you're operating, then all those costs are behind you, and it's relatively inexpensive to just keep the missions going,' said Amanda Hendrix, the chief executive officer of the Planetary Science Institute, a nonprofit research organization. 'So I'm very concerned about these operating missions that are still producing excellent and really important science data.' The Trump administration's narrower vision for NASA comes as it is seeking to reduce waste and jobs in the US government. Critics have faulted NASA over sluggish management of key programs, spiraling costs and delays. Still, the administration is eager to pour more money into putting people in space. It wants to use $7 billion of the $18.8 billion it would allocate to NASA overall to ramp up efforts to return people to the moon, and invest $1 billion more in sending people to Mars. 'This is a NASA that would be primarily human spaceflight focused,' Casey Dreier, chief of space policy for The Planetary Society, a nonprofit that advocates for space science and exploration, said of the proposed changes. 'This is a NASA that would say, 'The universe is primarily the moon and Mars,' and basically step away from everything else.' There are signs that the administration's proposed cutbacks won't satisfy lawmakers who view space as vital to US interests. Senator Ted Cruz, the Texas Republican who leads a committee that oversees NASA, has proposed legislation that would would provide nearly $10 billion to the agency. 'American dominance in space is a national security imperative,' Cruz said in a statement to Bloomberg. 'The Commerce Committee's bill carefully invests in beating China to the Moon and Mars — while respecting every taxpayer dollar. It's rocket fuel for the commercial space companies and NASA that are working to keep America ahead of China in the Space Race.' As Trump's spending proposal moves through Congress, NASA has been left without a strong leader who can press its case after the president withdrew his nomination of billionaire commercial astronaut Jared Isaacman to run the agency. In a recent interview on the All-In Podcast, Isaacman appeared to suggest Trump pulled his nomination because of his close ties to Musk, who had a public falling out with the president. Trump threatened to cancel SpaceX's government contracts amid the row, but has since backed down. 'Stopping Jared from becoming confirmed is only going to hurt NASA's ability to push back on budget cuts,' Jim Muncy, a space consultant and lobbyist with PoliSpace, said before Isaacman's nomination was pulled. Spaceflight Shift For decades, NASA handled every step of launching rockets, probes and people into space, from developing, building and launching vehicles, to running missions. Only the government had the resources and the capacity to shoulder the risks without returning a profit. That all changed in recent years with the emergence of a vibrant US space industry dominated by wealthy entrepreneurs with a passion for spaceflight and the financial wherewithal to withstand repeated failure. Over time, NASA has ceded more design, development and production work to those companies. SpaceX is carrying cargo and astronauts to the International Space Station, and sending probes into deep space from a rented launchpad at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. After helping to spur the development of SpaceX hardware, NASA is now one of the company's biggest customers. 'This has kind of been the tension with the rise of commercial space,' said Mike French, a consultant for the Space Policy Group. 'NASA has gone from 'We're operating these things; we're building these things' to 'We've gotten really good at buying these things.'' During Trump's presidency, NASA's transformation into an incubator for private industry is likely to gain speed. Throughout its budget proposal, the White House calls for mimicking past programs that have leaned more on outsourcing to the private sector. 'With a leaner budget across all of government, we are all taking a closer look at how we work, where we invest, and how we adjust our methods to accomplish our mission,' NASA's acting administrator, Janet Petro, wrote in a message accompanying the plan. 'At NASA, that means placing a renewed emphasis on human spaceflight, increasing investments in a sustainable plan to return to the Moon for long-term human exploration and accelerating efforts to send American astronauts to Mars.' NASA declined to comment beyond Petro's statement. NASA contracts remain one of the most significant and steady sources of funding for the space industry, which has allowed the agency to set the direction for many businesses. But that balance of power is shifting, and cuts to NASA's funding could cause its leadership to fade. 'NASA would, in a sense, define access and define the culture of spaceflight and define the ambitions of spaceflight,' Dreier said. 'Now, they have competitors for that, and frankly, some of their competitors are laying out more ambitious programs.' Challenging Missions While NASA has evolved into a technical adviser and financial backer for space companies, pure science has remained part of its mission. NASA's transition to more commercial partnerships was started, in part, to free up money to spend on exotic, challenging missions with no obvious near-term commercial rewards. Pulling back is likely to have consequences. Trump's broader push to curtail funding for science — the administration has choked off money for medical, climate and other research — risks eroding an important source of American soft power. After the end of the Cold War-era space race, NASA became a vessel for international cooperation, proving countries with lofty goals can work together. Many of the NASA missions Trump has proposed canceling or pulling away from entailed collaboration with European allies. The prospect of reduced funding is also causing worry about agency talent. Already, NASA is competing with the private space industry for engineers. Shutting down missions could push agency scientists to seek other opportunities. 'Folks are very worried about what they're going to do now with their lives, and where they're going to go,' said Hendrix, the Planetary Science Institute's CEO. The long-term outlook for NASA is difficult to discern. In the coming years, it is expected to continue its Artemis moon program, and start a new program for human exploration of Mars, with commercial companies at the forefront. But the scientific ambitions that long helped define NASA appear likely to become more limited. 'If we elect to say we no longer want to understand our origins, or we no longer want to challenge ourselves to see if there's life out in the cosmos, that is the equivalent of turning our heads down and burying ourselves in our cell phones when we're standing at the edge of the Grand Canyon,' said The Planetary Society's Dreier. 'We miss something more profound and big and deep that we otherwise have no access to in our modern society.' On This Date: One Of America's Deadliest Tornadoes Strikes Wisconsin Town Hosting A Circus
One of America's deadliest tornadoes tore through a Wisconsin town hosting a circus more than 125 years ago. Gollmar Brothers Circus was in New Richmond, Wisconsin, on June 12, 1899, bringing a larger number of people to the town than usual. Before hitting New Richmond, three people were killed by the tornado on farms near Burkhardt and Boardman. The twister then carved a path through the middle of New Richmond just after the circus ended, according to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee. About 300 buildings were damaged or destroyed along a path 3,000 feet long and 1,000 feet wide through New Richmond. Incredibly, a 3,000 pound safe was said to have been carried a full block away. A total of 117 lives were lost in the tornado, making it the 9th deadliest on record in the U.S., according to NOAA's Storm Prediction Center Flying debris from the tornado killed many of the 117 people, and 26 separate families had multiple deaths. The NWS says the tornado was easy to spot and that this may have kept the death toll from being even higher.
