Ratnamala, the mother of the convict, Nilesh Borkar (27), was an eyewitness to the murder of her elder son, Mangesh. But she turned hostile. The prosecution's case received a major boost when Ratnamala's daughter-in-law, Shweta, appeared before the court at the end of the trial and deposed against her husband, Nilesh, a resident of Konde Vasti in Uruli Devachi.
Judge Jadhav observed in his judgment that Shweta, being an eyewitness, confirmed that Nilesh intentionally caused the death of his elder brother, Mangesh, beyond reasonable doubt.
Her evidence corroborated with her mother-in-law Ratnamala's complaint, he said.
The prosecution claimed that Nilesh had hit Mangesh with a stone girder on his head, killing him instantly on January 19, 2020. The Loni Kalbhor police had arrested Nilesh the next day.
Additional public prosecutor Namdev Taralgatti examined nine witnesses, including Ratnamala, to prove the guilt of Nilesh, but Ratnamala refused to depose against her son.
Taralgatti sought the assistance of pairvi officer Lalita Kanawde from the Loni Kalbhor police to secure Shweta's presence before the court because her name appeared in the case papers, but the investigating officer did not record her statement. Her whereabouts were unknown since the murder.
Taralgatti said Kanawde analysed Nilesh's criminal antecedents, traced Shweta to her parents' place in Solapur and secured her presence before the court.

Kanawade convinced Shweta to give evidence, leading to the conviction of her husband, Nilesh.
He said Shweta could have turned hostile like her mother-in-law, but she fearlessly deposed against her husband because her conscience was alive. Her presence was secured before the court under Section 311 (power to summon witness) of the Criminal Procedure Code, Taralgatti added.

Hotel waiter's rotting body found, roommate suspected killer

Nagpur: A gruesome murder sent shockwaves through the quiet neighbourhood of Vihirgaon where the highly decomposed body of a hotel waiter Anil Pawar, 35, was discovered in his rented room late Friday evening. The prime suspect, Anil's roommate and friend Raju Pawar, is believed to have killed him on June 2 before fleeing the scene. Hudkeshwar police have launched a manhunt for Raju. Anil and Raju, both hailing from Yavatmal district, shared a rented room on Umred road since May 15. The duo, who worked at different hotels in the vicinity, lived in harmony until an unknown dispute turned deadly. The motive behind the murder remains unclear, leaving investigators puzzled as they piece together the events leading to Anil's death. According to police sources, Raju fled with Anil's cellphone and sold both his own and Anil's devices to a pan kiosk owner for Rs1,000 before fleeing to his village in Yavatmal hours after the alleged murder. The discovery of Anil's body came after neighbours reported a foul odour emanating from the room, prompting the landlord to alert the authorities. A woman claimed to have told the police about seeing Raju hurriedly leaving the rented room with a bag on the day of the crime. Based on her statement, the Hudkeshwar police registered a murder case against him under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Investigation revealed that Raju reached his village on June 2 and confided in a friend about his involvement in the crime before vanishing again. This confession has given the police a critical lead, though tracking him has proven challenging due to his switched-off cellphone. "The absence of active mobile signals is a significant hurdle, but we are exploring all possible avenues to locate the suspect," a senior officer from Hudkeshwar police station said. Anil, a father of one, was last seen at his workplace on June 1. On June 2, he briefly visited the hotel for an hour before returning to his rented room. Police found a blood-stained oven next to Anil's body, suggesting it was used as the murder weapon. Investigators suspect Raju struck Anil on the head from behind, causing fatal injuries. The advanced state of decomposition made it difficult to identify specific wounds, but the oven's presence points to a violent assault.

Six house burglaries solved, juvenile gang busted

Nagpur: The local crime branch (LCB) of Nagpur Rural has cracked a series of six house burglary cases, leading to the detention of a juvenile gang involved in thefts across multiple police jurisdictions. Valuables worth Rs1.6 lakh have been seized in the operation. The breakthrough came during the investigation of a housebreaking case registered at Kodhali police station. While the local police pursued leads, a parallel probe was launched by the LCB. Acting on technical intelligence and information from informants, LCB teams detained a juvenile from Khaparkheda on June 4. During interrogation, the juvenile confessed to his involvement and named two more minors as accomplices. Further questioning of the detained juveniles revealed that the group had committed several housebreakings in the jurisdictions of Katol, Kuhi, Hinganghat, Mankapur, and Yashodhara Nagar police stations. They were reportedly working alongside two other associates, also believed to be juveniles. During follow-up raids, the police recovered various stolen items from their possession.
