Ronnie O'Sullivan's 'phenomenal' ex-practice partner retires from snooker at 53
Anthony Hamilton, who was once described as "phenomenal" by Ronnie O'Sullivan, has called time on his 34-year snooker career after failing to regain his tour card
One of Ronnie O'Sullivan's favourite practice partners has announced his retirement from snooker after 34 years at the top level. Anthony Hamilton turned pro in 1991 - a year before O'Sullivan and fellow greats John Higgins and Mark Williams - and has been a constant presence on the World Snooker Tour ever since.
Although he may not have reached the heights he was capable of, Hamilton's career was still marked by notable achievements, including a ranking title win at the 2017 German Masters and four World Championship quarter-final appearances. Following a loss of form and his tour card, Hamilton attempted to regain his place at Q-School but was defeated by Germany's Umut Dikme, prompting his decision to retire at 53.
Hamilton said: "It felt strange playing there, knowing that these could be your last couple of matches. But I'm not going to miss it because the last few years have not been that enjoyable."
However, his love for the game remains. He added: "I probably love it again now more than I used to. I appreciate it more. I watch it more now than I used to. I love it more and I love players now because I know what they're about.
"Back in my prime, snooker wasn't always on my mind as I had other interests. But now I'm older, I've rediscovered my love for the game and I'm eager to see what the future holds."
Hamilton was once praised by O'Sullivan, who described him as "phenomenal" and a "great practice partner" in 2021. The Rocket said: "He was phenomenal, still is, just goes ton, ton, ton, ton. It's good for you to play someone like that because it rubs off on you. He was a great practice partner.
"He's won the German and had a very good career. It's a compliment, but with his game, he should have won more, really, because he's a very heavy scorer. That's why he's still competing, because of his scoring power.
"Plays the right shots, plays the right game, plays in the right spirit. A bit like [Anthony] McGill maybe, plays the game nicely, good cue action, everything's nice. When he does bring his best form, he's like that every day in practice.
"If he could bring that regularly to the match table, he'd have won multiple titles. I don't know why he hasn't because he's got bottle, he's got everything.
"It's a strange one. Some players you look at and think they're too good not to have won more. He's definitely one of those."
O'Sullivan, four years Hamilton's junior, looks set to play on following his comeback at the World Championship, where he made the semi-finals despite complaining of cue issues. Exactly how often fans will see the Rocket next season is unclear, though.
Speaking following his Crucible defeat to eventual champion Zhao Xintong, he announced plans to quit the UK for the Middle East. The Rocket, who has a snooker academy in his name in Saudi Arabia, added: "I'll still try and play snooker but I don't know what the future looks like for me really.
"I'm moving away soon so I'll just see how it goes. There's a lot of more important things in life to worry about than a game of snooker."

Thomas Tuchel wants ‘relentless' England performance against minnows Andorra
England boss Thomas Tuchel wants a 'relentless' display against minnows Andorra as the road to next summer's World Cup continues in Spain. After the German coach's reign began with Wembley wins against Albania and Latvia, the Euro 2024 runners-up resume qualification against the side sat 173rd in FIFA's world rankings. Tuchel's first away game as England boss is being played in Barcelona rather than Andorra, who have lost all six previous meetings and are available at 120/1 with one bookmaker to win at the RCDE Stadium. The 51-year-old knows it is a matter of how many his side win by on Saturday, when he wants the team to show patience and persistence. 'It will be on us to get going,' Tuchel said. 'I think it is on us to keep the tempo high, it is on us to bring the energy to the pitch. 'It is on us to bring the attacking energy to the pitch and to do this in a relentless way. 'I can fully understand that this is not the easiest time of the season for an international break. The players come from a short break of holiday, from a long and tiring season and then accepting again the role. 'It can be demanding but what I feel from the group is they are to be here. Ollie Watkins has withdrawn from the #ThreeLions camp as a precaution due to a minor injury. — England (@England) June 6, 2025 'We are quite new together, it's our second camp and I have trust and belief that we will do what is necessary to get the result that we want. 'We want a win. We want a clear and solid win that is never in danger. This is what we expect from us tomorrow. 'It is important not to over expect from us in terms of already a clear result, biggest chances, goals already after 10-20 minutes, and get impatient and get frustrated with ourselves. 'I think it's a test to our patience. Andorra played against Spain and it was 1-0 at half-time with a set-piece. 'It's a World Cup qualifier. Respect your opponent, you respect the quality, the defensive organisation of your opponent and you understand how difficult it is to break down.' England will be cheered on by 6,800 travelling fans in Catalonia, where the team have spent the week to help aid team bonding and preparations for next summer's warm weather World Cup. Cycling in sauna-like conditions and testing on their core body temperature have formed part of the camp, while the temperature is forecast to be 26 degrees Celsius come kick-off on Saturday. 'We just tried to figure out how the players individually react to heat because it will be a very hot and humid World Cup,' Tuchel told BBC Radio 5 Live. 'We did this so that we can provide individual cooling systems and individual electrolyte drinks and so on.' Ollie Watkins was with the camp but withdrew with a minor injury on the eve of a game Tuchel confirmed Harry Kane would skipper the side. The Bayern Munich striker is among nine England players heading to this summer's Club World Cup after Tuesday's friendly against Senegal. Motivated on MD-1 🫡 — England (@England) June 6, 2025 'You get just lost if you think now about the Senegal game and then you think about the Club World Cup,' Tuchel said. 'Then you just lose focus. 'We take it step by step. We will have a serious line-up tomorrow and we think the line-up is exactly the line-up that gives us the biggest chance to put the game in our way. 'After the match, we take decisions for the Senegal match and we can maybe then think a little bit more about individual players who go after that to the Club World Cup – but tomorrow, it's a full focus on the World Cup qualifier.'

Arsenal given green light over £60m transfer following fresh discussions
Arsenal are looking for a striker this summer and have money to spend to give Mikel Arteta what he wants, and the Gunners have held fresh talks with RB Leipzig over £60million-rated star Benjamin Sesko Arsenal have held further discussions over a £60m move for Benjamin Sesko. And RB Leipzig ARE ready to sell the 22-year-old Slovenia striker if they get the right offer this summer. Sesko is on Arsenal's shortlist and they have sounded out his representatives and RB Leipzig about a deal with the German club ready to talk business if they can reach agreement. Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta also has Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyökeres on the shortlist while Newcastle's Alexander Isak looks impossible with the Toon Army refusing to sell. The Gunners came close to getting Sesko last summer but he decided to stay in Leipzig for another year rather than move to the Premier League. But as Arsenal wade through the options, the fact that Arsenal have held further talks over Sesko may point to them moving in that direction. Leipzig are planning to sell both Sesko and Dutch attacking midfielder Xavi Simons to rebalance the books and fund a needed rebuild this summer, after missing out on European qualification during a chaotic 2024-25 campaign. On the other side of the coin, Gyökeres would prefer a move to Arsenal over other Premier League clubs and also interest from Spain and Italy. Sporting are ready to sell the Sweden international who hit 95 goals in 100 appearances for the Portuguese club who will allow him to leave if a club comes in with just over £60m this summer. Gyokeres knows English football from his time at Brighton and Coventry but he really made his name in Portugal but is ready for a new challenge. Gyokeres himself has been tight-lipped on his plans. Asked about his future after Sporting's final game of the season, he said: 'Let's see. It's hard for me to say, because yeah it is football and you never know what's going to happen in the summer. "So for me to say anything else than that is impossible.' Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is also keen on a No.9, knows all about Gyokeres from their time together at Sporting and is waiting in the wings to pounce, having lost out on Liam Delap to Chelsea.

Liverpool 'get green light' to complete huge £126m Florian Wirtz deal
Liverpool have already been busy in the summer transfer market with the signing of Jeremie Frimpong and are now closing in on a move for his Bayer Leverkusen teammate Florian Wirtz Liverpool have moved a step closer to sealing a sensational deal for Florian Wirtz, with Bayer Leverkusen having now granted their permission for the attacking midfielder to complete a dream move to Anfield. The reigning Premier League champions have been credited with an interest in the German since the end of the season. It was thought that they were set to face competition from Manchester City and Bayern Munich, but they both dropped out of the race for Wirtz's signature. Liverpool have since been locked in negotiations with Leverkusen in an attempt to secure an agreement - and it now appears that they have managed just that. According to reports in Belgium, the Bundesliga side have given Wirtz the 'green light' to complete his move to Anfield. The clubs have agreed a fee of €150m (£126m) for Wirtz's services with personal terms already agreed. Former Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller had recently given an update on talks and suggesting he felt positive that a move would eventually be completed. 'It's no secret that he'd like to go to Liverpool,' Voller told DAZN (via Sport1). 'I know the clubs are negotiating with each other. [But with] transfers like this [it's] often the case that it takes a while until an agreement is finally reached. Of course, in the end, you have the feeling it will go through. 'Florian Wirtz has proven that he is a very, very valuable player. Not only for Bayer Leverkusen but also for the national team. That's why he costs a few euros more.' Meanwhile, Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard also shared his feelings on the Reds' potential deal for Wirtz and appeared to be a big fan. He said: 'There are rumours obviously, Florian Wirtz. 'A big talent who's done fantastic for Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen. He's got a huge future in front of him, so if Liverpool is the place for him, let's hope we can make it happen.' Should a deal be completed, Wirtz would be the second star to swap Bayer Leverkusen for Liverpool. Arne Slot 's side also completed a move for fullback Jeremie Frimpong, who was signed for around £35m. Liverpool's business does not appear likely to end there either. The Reds are also closing in on a deal for Armin Pecsi from Puskas Akademia for £1.5m. They are also hopeful of signing his Hungarian counterpart Milos Kerkes from Bournemouth. The Cherries have put a £45m asking price on the left-back ahead of next season. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
