Fossier helping Panthers hit high notes in hunt for EIHL title
Mitch Fossier is the singing winger hitting all the right notes for Nottingham Panthers in their Elite Ice Hockey League title tilt. The 27-year-old American is Panthers' top points scorer with 15 goals and 35 assists in 38 appearances since arriving in November.Fossier has been a prolific influence that has Nottingham challenging league leaders Belfast Giants and fierce rivals Sheffield Steelers for the title going into the final weekend of the regular season. And while he has been a hit with a hockey stick, it is with a guitar that he has been working on what he hopes to be a breakout song to be released at the end of the season."Hockey is something you can only do for so long and if there was any way that I could make a career out of music I would in a heartbeat - it's just so much fun," Fossier told BBC Sport."A lot of the stuff I've written in the past is very slow and it's very melancholy and the song I'm releasing is a little more poppy and upbeat and hopefully more prone to success, and just easier to listen to for your average person."
Fossier has been releasing his own music since he was a teenager, with one of his earliest songs 'Howling Sound' generating more than 300,000 streams on Spotify. In 2023, when playing for hometown club Atlanta Gladiators in the East Coast Hockey League – the third tier of the sport in the United States – he put out a full-length album.Composing songs, recording tracks and playing gigs are just as much part of his life than his hockey career, which has taken him from the University of Maine to Slovakia with Banska Bystrica as well as a number of ECHL and American Hockey League sides along the way."They play off each other," he said."It's a cool contrast in the sense that hockey and music are so different that they're good escapes from the other."With an acoustic guitar in hand and folksy, tender sound, Fossier the musician appears to be completely different to the goal-hungry winger he is on the ice.Playing what is considered to be the fastest team sport in the world is more in tune with thrash metal music."You're right, the contrast is kind of funny and it's probably not what most would expect," Fossier said. But even as an ice hockey player, he sees himself as "a smooth and steady kind of guy" who craves the art that comes with attacking."One of the reasons I love hockey is the creative aspect of it," he said."There's creativity that I don't think you find in any other sport, so I think instinctually I like to make plays."I can definitely see the parallel between liking to play music and there being a hint of that in the way I play hockey."
Fossier's approach made him an instant fan favourite at Nottingham Panthers, a club that has failed to win a major trophy since 2017.When he arrived in November, Panthers were seventh in the table. Now, heading into the final regular season weekend, they are third and just four points off top. They could still claim the title if they win both their matches against competition leaders Belfast - who they visit on Saturday before hosting on Sunday - and second-placed Sheffield slip up."It's still mathematically possible, but we need things to go our way at this point," Fossier said."When you look too far ahead it can get overwhelming and you kind of forget to be in the moment. So honestly, I'm trying not to think too much about it. "We are going to Belfast to try and win that game, then we'll see what happens and how the rest of the league looks."The drama of the league title race, which will be followed by the play-offs, means Fossier and his Panthers team-mates have nothing but must win games ahead of them. What comes after that remains less certain for the American who is yet to have a contract in place for next season."We'll just worry about that after the season," he said."But I will say that there's not too many places that would be better than this to play at outside of playing in the NHL and making millions of dollars."

Rangers appoint new boss Russell Martin on three-year contract
The 39-year-old former MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton boss has signed a three-year contract. He will be joined at Ibrox by assistant head coach Matt Gill and performance coach Rhys Owen. ✍️ Our new Head Coach, Russell Martin. — Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) June 5, 2025 Martin guided Southampton to promotion to the Premier League last year but was sacked in December following one win from their first 16 games. Rangers finished last season under the caretaker management of former captain Barry Ferguson, having dismissed Philippe Clement in February. Ex-Scotland defender Martin, who had a short loan spell as a player at Rangers in 2018, is tasked with wrestling power back from the other side of Glasgow after Celtic's stranglehold on Scottish football continued with a 13th William Hill Premiership title in 14 seasons. 'From my time here, I had a taste of how special this club is, the expectation, the passion and the history,' he told the club's website. 'Now, as I return, I'm determined to bring success back, for the supporters, the players, and everyone inside this club. 'There's a lot to be done, but the goal is clear: win matches, win trophies and give Rangers fans a team that they can be proud of.' ✍️ We are delighted to confirm the appointment of Russell Martin as Head Coach of our men's first team on a three-year deal. Full Details ⬇️ — Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) June 5, 2025 Martin's arrival is the latest in a series of major changes at the club. An American consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises secured a majority shareholding on Friday, while new sporting director Kevin Thelwell officially began work on Monday. Rangers chief executive Patrick Stewart, who led the recruitment process alongside Thelwell, said: 'Our criteria for our next coach were clear: we wanted a coach who will excel in terms of how we want to play, improve our culture, develop our squad, and ultimately win matches. Russell was the standout candidate.'

The five things that made Russell Martin the ‘standout' candidate to be Rangers boss
RUSSELL MARTIN might need some time to win over the Rangers fans. But it became clear early on to the men who interviewed him for the head coach post at Ibrox that he was THE man to turn things around. 1 Russell Martin has been unveiled as the new head coach at Rangers Martin was confirmed as the new Rangers boss this morning and described being given the job as a "privilege". He's well-known for his commitment to his own particular style of play - and a reluctance to change it. Ibrox chief executive Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell led the search to appoint the new manager. Steven Gerrard and Davide Ancelotti were strongly considered, with ex-Ajax boss Francesco Farioli, Feynoor's Brian Priske and ex-RB Leipzig boss Marco Rose also linked with the role. But Thelwell, who joined the club from Everton just before the 49ers takeover was announced, has outlined what made the former Gers, Norwich City and Scotland defender their standout candidate. He listed five things about the 39-year-old and his football philosophy that appealed to the him and the board. And despite his torrid time with Southampton in t he Premier League, Thelwell insists Martin is now a BETTER manager for it. He said: 'Through the many conversations Patrick and I have had with Russell in recent weeks, he has emerged as the outstanding candidate. 'Russell comes to Rangers with hard-earned experience. 'His time in the Premier League has sharpened his approach, both tactically and personally. What next for Rangers after American takeover is confirmed? 'He's better for it, and we believe that will translate into the kind of leadership and performance our supporters expect. 'His teams play dominant football, they control the ball, dictate the tempo and impose themselves physically. They press aggressively and work relentlessly off the ball. These are all characteristics that we believe are required to be successful at home, away, and abroad. 'We're looking forward to getting to work with Russell immediately as we prepare for a demanding and important season ahead.' Chief exec Stewart added: 'Our criteria for our next coach were clear: we wanted a coach who will excel in terms of how we want to play, improve our culture, develop our squad, and ultimately win matches. Russell was the standout candidate. 'This appointment is about building a winning team and a strong culture. He is no stranger to our club, we expect success and Russell knows that. We are excited for his leadership.' Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
