
A Major Meteor Shower Has Begun: When To See It At Its Best
The Lyrids, the first meteor shower since January and one of the oldest known is set to begin on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, though the peak in the early hours of Tuesday, April 22. During that peak, about 18 'shooting stars,' some very bright fireballs, are expected each hour.
After a few months of little-to-no meteor activity, everything changes in spring in the Northern Hemisphere with the Lyrid meteor shower, famous for bright 'fireball' shooting stars. Fireballs are defined as meteors about the same brightness as Venus.
Occurring April 15-29 this year, the Lyrids typically produce good rates of bright meteors for three nights centered on the maximum, according to the American Meteor Society.
That makes Monday, April 21, Tuesday, April 22 and Wednesday, April 23, good nights. However, clear and dark skies are essential, so the early hours after midnight — when any location on Earth is the darkest — is the best time to look up.
Lyrids are best seen from the Northern Hemisphere because they appear to emanate from the constellation Lyra, which is centered upon the bright star Vega. It's rising in the northeastern night sky after dark.
The Lyrid meteor shower is the product of dust and debris left in the inner solar system by long-period comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher, which takes 422 years to orbit the sun. It last looped around our star in 1861 and won't return until 2283. 'It's obscure comet that nobody really knows much about because it spends most of its time far away, where we can't even see it with even our most powerful telescopes,' said Dr. Nick Moskovitz at Lowell Observatory, in an interview.
Meteors are caused by small particles of rock and dust from a comet entering Earth's atmosphere and burning up, releasing energy as photons of light. According to NASA, they come from leftover comet particles and bits from broken asteroids. 'Comet Thatcher has a wide range of little particles that fall off its surface, from very small fine grain stuff, like talcum powder, to much larger particles like marbles, even apples, oranges and grapefruits,' said Moskovitz. 'That means a wide range of brightnesses — and some of the Lyrid meteors can be spectacular fireball meteors that leave what we call a persistent train in the atmosphere.' Fireballs result from really big meteors exciting atoms in the Earth's atmosphere that get ionized. 'That ionized trail of particles can persist for a long time after the meteor comes in,' said Moskovitz.
The best way to watch a meteor shower is to treat it as a stargazing session. Be outside in the pre-dawn hours on the peak night and watch the skies. Don't look at your smartphone — its bright white light will kill your night vision and make the 'shooting stars' much harder to see. Keep artificial lights — including street and security lights — out of your vision. Although the 'shooting stars' will appear to have traveled from close to Vega, meteor showers are all-sky events, so you can look anywhere in the night sky.
Hot on the heels of the Lyrids will come the Eta Aquarids, a meteor shower that will run from April 19 through May 28, peaking in the early hours of Monday, May 5. About 40-60 'shooting stars' are expected per hour. The Eta Aquariids are the product of Halley's Comet, the most famous comet. This short-period comet last visited the inner solar system in 1986 and is next due in 2061. This meteor shower is best seen in the Southern Hemisphere since its radiant point is the constellation Aquarius, which is low in the southeast as seen from the Northern Hemisphere.

The nights surrounding June 7 will see Jupiter and Mercury crowd together close to the horizon in the northwestern sky. Stargazers in the U.S. will need a clear horizon to spot the planetary duo hanging less than 10 degrees (about a fist's width at arm's length) above the western horizon when the sun sets on June 6, with Jupiter positioned to the upper left of Mercury. The planets will only be visible for around 45 minutes after sunset, at which time they will follow our star below the horizon. The following evenings will see fleet-footed Mercury draw level with Jupiter, before rising above and away from the gas giant in the night sky as a result of the smaller world's tight orbit around the sun. On June 7, the planets will pass a little over two degrees from each other - close enough to fit comfortably inside the field of view of a pair of 10x50 binoculars. Here's why SpaceX faces a bright future as government contractor despite Musk-Trump divorce
The public breakup between Elon Musk and President Trump has cast a pall over the future of SpaceX – but the mogul's company should remain on a solid trajectory because the two sides need each other. Trump has counted on his estranged First Buddy's privately owned firm to fulfill the administration's plans for NASA to return to the moon, ongoing operations at the International Space Station, a reported classified deal with US intelligence to build hundreds of spy satellites and expanding internet access to rural parts of America. SpaceX – known for building and launching rockets, and the Starlink satellite internet network – has approximately $22 billion in government contracts on the books, according to Reuters. That includes a roughly $5 billion deal to build the Dragon spacecraft for use by NASA, which Musk threatened to decommission in his unhinged social media rants aimed at Trump – only to later reverse course hours later. Trump threatened to end Musk's federal contracts in response to the verbal onslaught, which included the allegation that Trump is 'in the Epstein files' and that he would have 'lost the election' without his help. 'Trump could certainly cancel most deals and contracts if he wants but the government may still have to pay them – depends on the contract details,' a Republican consultant connected with Trump, who was granted anonymity to speak candidly about the feud, told The Post on Friday. The two men appeared no closer to a detente, with Trump refusing to get on the phone with his former DOGE cost-cutter and largest campaign benefactor after he blasted the White House-backed 'One Big Beautiful Bill.' While that makes for great theater, the split probably works in both of their favors, according to the source. 'Trump and Elon both got what they wanted here,' the GOP consultant said. 'Elon was able to distance himself from Trump in a public enough way to get his businesses back on track and Trump was able to have all of the MAGA warriors who were questioning the bill shut up or even defend it so they could defend Trump and prove they took his side.' SpaceX 'will be fine' despite the fireworks, the source added. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt declined to comment on the war of words. 'President Trump is focused on making our country great again and passing the One Big Beautiful Bill,' she said. SpaceX did not immediately return a request for comment. As the founder, chairman and CEO of SpaceX, Musk is in total control with 79% of the company's voting shares as of 2023, according to a filing at the time. The closely held firm recently secured a $350 billion valuation. Overall, Musk and his businesses that also include Tesla, brain chip firm Neuralink and The Boring Company have received at least $38 billion in government contracts, loans, subsidies and tax credits, according to a recent Washington Post analysis. If Trump does decide to go to DefCon 5 on Musk, the billionaire's alleged drug use could be used as one possible lever to wriggle out of the SpaceX contracts. During Trump's first term in office in 2019, Bloomberg reported that the Pentagon was reviewing Musk's SpaceX security clearance after he smoked marijuana during an appearance on 'The Joe Rogan Experience' podcast. While Musk has strenuously denied misusing drugs, House Democrats this week requested details from Trump on whether he had any knowledge of Musk working 'under the influence.' The possible loss of government contracts would not be 'catastrophic' for Musk or his rocket company. 'SpaceX has developed itself into a global powerhouse that dominates most of the space industry, but there's no question that it would result in significant lost revenue and missed contract opportunities,' Justus Parmar, CEO of SpaceX investor Fortuna Investments, told Reuters. Meanwhile, MAGA firebrand Steve Bannon called for the South African-born Musk to be deported – and floated the possibility that Trump could use a Korean War-era statute called the Defense Production Act to enable a federal takeover of the privately owned company. However, the headline-grabbing proposal is likely a nonstarter. 'There's no way Bannon's idea of just taking over private companies works out long term, both because it would be litigated and because other companies would keep the US government at arm's length to avoid future similar issues,' the consultant said. 'Neither outcome is workable.'
