Pakistan appreciates Anwar's bid to intervene in India conflict, says envoy

Pakistan's high commissioner to Malaysia, Syed Ahsan Raza Shah, said the country is open to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's mediation efforts.
KUALA LUMPUR : Pakistan appreciates Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's efforts to mediate in its conflict with India, the Islamic republic's high commissioner to Malaysia, Syed Ahsan Raza Shah, said.
He added that Anwar was a well-respected statesman in both countries, which made his role as a potential mediator especially significant.
'We appreciate Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's role as a peacemaker and promoter of peace. We believe he is a statesman of the highest order – one of the greatest of this era,' he said.
'We welcome his offer to mediate between India and Pakistan. He is highly respected in both countries and enjoys strong relationships with the leadership in both Pakistan and India,' Shah told reporters at a media briefing here today.
Last week, Indian MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, who was in Malaysia as part of a parliamentary delegation, said the India-Pakistan conflict was a strictly bilateral issue which did not require foreign mediation.
This was after Anwar said Malaysia was open to helping ease tensions between India and Pakistan, which escalated after a deadly attack in Pahalgam, India, that killed 26, most of them tourists.
He also condemned all forms of violence and expressed support for an independent and transparent investigation to identify those responsible for the attack in Kashmir.
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 in a military response to the April 22 Pahalgam attack. New Delhi blamed the incident on 'terrorists' backed by Pakistan, which Islamabad denied.
Both sides used fighter jets, missiles, drones and artillery in four days of clashes, their worst fighting in decades, before a ceasefire was announced.
Separately, Syed Ahsan urged the media to seek clarification from Malaysia's foreign ministry regarding a recent claim by Indian media that Pakistan had attempted to disrupt the visit of the Indian parliamentary delegation.
'It is unthinkable that a country or embassy would ask its host nation to prevent the delegation of another country from visiting.
'I urge you (media) and your colleagues to ask the foreign affairs ministry whether this claim is true,' he said.
On June 4, Malaysiakini reported that unnamed sources, quoted by India's NDTV, had claimed that the Pakistan high commission allegedly lobbied Malaysian authorities to cancel the delegation's engagements.
The report also alleged that Malaysia rebuffed Pakistan's request to cancel the delegation's visit, said to have been made in the name of 'Islamic solidarity'.

Govt denies blocking MTUC from ILC participation, cites internal dispute

The human resources ministry has urged MTUC to expedite its re-election to restore stability to the trade union movement and ensure Malaysia's full participation in the ILC next year. (File pic) PETALING JAYA : The human resources ministry has dismissed claims that the government blocked the participation of labour representatives to the now-concluded 2025 International Labour Conference (ILC). The ministry said the non-representation of workers at the conference held in Geneva was caused by the absence of legitimate leadership in the Malaysian Trade Unions Congress (MTUC), the country's largest trade union umbrella organisation. 'In February, the Court of Appeal ordered MTUC to conduct a re-election of its leadership within 90 days under the watch of a joint special committee,' it said in a statement today. 'This election was later postponed to August, leaving MTUC without a legitimate leadership to represent workers in any official platform.' The ministry stressed that the selection of the Malaysian delegation to the ILC was made transparently under the guidelines of the International Labour Organization, after seeking advice from the Attorney-General's Chambers. It also urged MTUC to expedite its re-election to restore stability to the trade union movement and ensure Malaysia's full participation in the ILC next year. On June 4, Malaysiakini reported that the joint special committee's chairman, J Solomon, denied knowledge of needing to hold an election within three months of the committee's formation. He had earlier criticised the government for failing to register labour delegates for the ILC.

Issues over Petros nothing to do with Petronas layoffs, says Fadillah

Deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof said Petronas is relooking its entire operation because of the decline in crude oil prices. KUCHING : Petroliam Nasional Bhd's (Petronas) move to trim its workforce stems from global challenges and is not connected to the national oil firm's issues with Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros). Deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof said Petronas's restructuring plan is necessary amid the decline in crude oil prices. He said he plans to meet with the company to get more details of the exercise. 'That (the decline in crude oil prices) is why Petronas has to relook its entire operation. I'm planning a meeting with them to get a briefing on the matter and to ensure that the number of layoffs can be reduced, if not avoided,' he told reporters attending the Aidiladha sacrificial event at Taman Hussein Mosque here today. On June 5, Petronas president and CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik Aziz said the national oil firm is cutting 10% of its workforce to cope with challenging operating conditions, particularly because of falling crude prices. He said the number of staff involved in the downsizing process stands at about 5,000, and those affected will be notified in stages next year. On May 21, the federal and state governments reached an understanding on matters involving Petronas and Petros. According to the joint declaration, Petronas will continue its functions, activities, responsibilities and obligations entrusted to the company in Malaysia under the Petroleum Development Act 1974 and its regulations. Any agreements and arrangements between Petronas and its subsidiaries with third parties for the purpose of liquefied natural gas sales from upstream operations through to LNG exports to foreign parties remain unaffected. A media statement by the Prime Minister's Office following the joint declaration said all relevant federal and state laws relating to gas distribution in Sarawak are to co-exist and be respected by all parties.

MTUC leadership crisis leaves Malaysian workers unrepresented at International Labour Conference in Geneva, says Human Resources Ministry

PUTRAJAYA, June 7 — There is no worker representation in the Malaysian delegation to the 113th International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva, Switzerland, due to there being no official leadership in the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC), said the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA). It stressed, in a statement today, that claims that the government deliberately excluded the participation of MTUC representatives were unfounded, misleading and malicious. KESUMA added that the Court of Appeal had on Feb 21 ordered the MTUC to hold fresh leadership elections within 90 days, which will be managed by a joint special committee (JBK). 'The election that was supposed to be held in May has been postponed to Aug 10, resulting in MTUC not having an official leadership to represent workers on any official platform, including the ILC,' it added. According to KESUMA, the JBK that was specifically established to handle the re-election process has no mandate to make policy decisions or nominate representatives for international forums. 'In fact, the nomination of names by the JBK to the ILC is outside the jurisdiction granted by the court and had been objected to by several MTUC affiliate members,' it clarified. KESUMA also emphasised that the selection of the Malaysian delegation to the ILC was made transparently based on the guidelines of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) as well as legal advice from the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) regarding MTUC's current status. It added that the government remains committed to its principle of tripartite and supports the rights of a valid workers' union's participation on the global platform. 'KESUMA calls for the MTUC re-elections to be promptly resolved to protect the image of the workers' union movement and ensure Malaysia's complete participation in the ILC next year,' it said. — Bernama
