Joining the salutations were members of the
, an organisation of the Qureshis, traditionally meat traders. The Qureshis take pride also in the fact that Sofiya Qureshi belongs to their biradri or jamat and has brought glory to the community and the country.
As All India Jamiatul Quresh has turned 100 and plans to hold centenary celebrations, it will also felicitate Sofiya, Farakhanda Qureshi, who secured All India Rank 67 in the UPSC exams 2024 and is slated to join the IAS, as well as a few others in the community who recently excelled in different fields.
"Once the situation stabilises, we will invite Sofiya Qureshi, Farakhanda Qureshi, and others who are the shining stars and brought immense pride to the community. We will honour them publicly also to inspire the young generation of Qureshis to emulate these exemplary figures," said Jamiatul Quresh's National President Sirajuddin Qureshi. "The Qureshis are no longer confined to slaughtering animals and chopping meat.
They fly fighter jets and occupy leading positions in bureaucracy and other professions."
Founded in 1924 by Bhaiyya Rasheeduddin Ahmed Qreshi, also its first president, Alhaj Sofi Ahmed Baksh, Mohammed Baksh Barelvi, and many others, the All India Jamiatul Quresh has represented the Qureshis in their journey for a century. Like many other Muslims, the Qureshis also bore the brunt of British oppression in the aftermath of the failure of the 1857 revolt.

Having suffered heavily at the hands of the British colonialists, who saw Indians, especially Muslims, with suspicion due to the widespread rebellion including in Meerut and Delhi, the Qureshis needed an organisation that could unite and lead them.
This organisation, headquartered at the aptly named Qasabpura (Qasab in Urdu means butchers) at Sadar Bazaar in Delhi, did exactly that as it fought and keeps fighting for the rights of the Qureshis.
Imran Babu Qureshi, vice-president of the organisation, led a recent delegation to the Deonar abattoir to discuss preparations for the upcoming Bakrid festival (in June). At a long meeting with the abattoir's General Manager Dr Kalim Pathan and other officials, they also discussed how to prevent harassment of the traders who transport goats, sheep, and buffaloes to the abattoir.
Since there are intemitently reports of cow vigilantes harassing transporters ferrying animals, a realisation has dawned among the Qureshis that alternatives must be looked for.
"The efforts to get the new generation of Qureshis educated began over two decades ago. It is true the efforts were expedited in the last few years as incidents of mob lynching and other harassment in the name of gau raksha (cow vigilantism) became frequent," said Imran, seated at his Bandra (West) office where Zafar Rahmatullah Qureshi, president of the Mumbai unit of the Jamat, joined him.
Mumbai has a vibrant Qureshi population.
Qureshi leaders and past office bearers of the Jamat like Babu Iftekhar Qureshi, Khurshid Matru, Abdul Qayyum Qureshi, and Khalid Babu Qureshi worked tirelessly to unite the Qureshis and keep them motivated. The Jamat's Mumbai unit has formed four sub-committees to work in the fields of education, medical, preparation of documents like OBC and income certificates, and information about and availing of govt schemes.
"There is a new awakening among the young generation that education is key to development. Even if some want to carry on in the
, education and training will go a long way in empowering them," said Zafar, manager at a movie theatre. He added that Qureshis are now increasingly joining the fruits business, construction, and banking, apart from becoming professionals like doctors, engineers,

Civil aviation is a big alarm: Supriya Sule on Ahmedabad plane crash

Pune (Maharashtra) [India], June 14 (ANI): After the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) MP Supriya Sule on Friday raised serious concerns over India's transport safety, calling civil aviation a big alarm and a 'red flag for a long time.' Speaking to ANI, Sule said, 'Civil aviation is a big alarm. It's been a red flag for a long time. I request the Government of India to come out with a white paper.' 'The entire transport, be it roads, airways or civil aviation, there are a lot of concerns about safety.' She added, 'I thank Nitin Gadkari because he has been openly asking MPs to focus on safety. Road safety has been his priority. All of us have tried our best to work with him to make sure infrastructure and safety improve,' she told ANI. Sule noted that despite efforts in road safety, the government had struggled to maintain safety in railways and civil aviation. 'Unfortunately, our experience in railways and civil aviation has been challenging. The accidents are very alarming. I am going to discuss it in the Parliament. I'm going to meet Ashwini Vaishnaw,' Sule said. She highlighted the massive number of commuters in Mumbai alone, saying, 'The number of people using railways in Mumbai is huge. The government of India needs to put in a lot of effort and improve safety in the railways pan-India.' While expressing her grief over the crash and its national impact, she said, 'It's very painful. I appreciate that yesterday Amit Shah and today the Prime Minister went. The whole country, and the world, has reached out. It's been a very difficult 24 hours for India. We are all deeply pained.' She also warmly remembered BJP leader and former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani, saying, 'Vijay Rupaniji had been a most wonderful colleague to all of us.' On Thursday, the Al-171 Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 aeroplane bound for London's Gatwick had crashed shortly after it took off from the Ahmedabad International Airport. The airlines said only one out of the 242 people on board the aircraft survived the crash. Israel military apologises after outrage for showing J&K as 'part of Pakistan' in a map

The Israel Defence Forces has apologised for posting an incorrect map of India's international boundaries after social media backlash for wrongly showing Jammu and Kashmir under Pakistani territory. In its post on X, the IDF admitted that the map "fails to precisely depict borders" but claimed it was only an "illustration of the region". "This post is an illustration of the region. This map fails to precisely depict borders. We apologize for any offence caused by this image," the IDF said. IDF's apology came after several social media users, mostly Indians, flagged the error and urged the Israeli military to retract the post. Some even tagged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Reacting to the map, the Congress slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government, particularly Prime Minister Narendra Modi, over India's foreign policy. Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera took to X, formerly Twitter, to take a swipe at PM Modi, calling it a diplomatic embarrassment for him. "Another day, another feather in Vishwaguru's cap. His 'friend' shows 'Jammu & Kashmir as a part of Pakistan,' he posted on X. Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu share close ties, which have been showcased through multiple high-profile visits, warm public gestures, and frequent praise for each other's leadership. Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Israel in 2017, a symbolic moment that broke decades of diplomatic hesitancy. After Israel's strikes, Iran on Saturday morning launched a fresh missile attack on Israel, particularly targeting its Northern region. Air-raid sirens were activated across northern Israel, and civilians were urged to take shelter. Iran earlier launched over 100 drones toward Israel in response to the overnight Israeli airstrikes that rocked Iranian soil and killed several top military officials, including the chief of its Revolutionary Guards, Hossein Salami, local media reported. The fresh escalation comes after Israeli armed forces took Iran by surprise and conducted multiple overnight airstrikes, targeting Iran's nuclear and military sites under 'Operation Rising Lion'.
