Kiwifruit giant Zespri posts $155m profit, while corporate profit soars

Orchard gate returns have dipped across most kiwifruit varieties per tray in the 2024/2025 fruit season, off records last year, while marketing giant Zespri's corporate profits hit a record.

marketer has reported an after-tax profit of $155.2 million for the financial year, down 10 percent on last year to $173.3m.
Meanwhile, the company's net corporate profit after tax, excluding revenue from licences, hit a record $79.8m, up 291 percent from $20.4m on the year prior.
Zespri released fewer licences that growers required to plant the trademarked fruit, which ate into its profits through the season.
For the country's 2800 kiwifruit growers, orchard gate returns were all down, except for
Organic SunGold
that was at a record $15.20 a tray, up 3 percent on last year's $14.71 per tray.
The biggest annual drop was seen for Green down 12 percent off last year's record, to $8.36 per tray, followed by RubyRed down nearly 10 percent to $17 a tray.
Zespri chief executive Jason Te Brake said strong sales were reflected in good demand from European Union markets.

Chief executive Jason Te Brake said it dropped its planting licences down to 250 hectares from 400ha, in response to supply chain constraints and challenging global market conditions.
"We increased our profit on being able to sell fruit, the underlying part of the business, for New Zealand supply and also for our Northern hemisphere fruit," he said.
"But it was offset by a decrease of how much license we released last year, so we released a lower volume of licence which meant that we had a drop in profit."
He said the drop came after a "good run" of high levels of licences, and was set to return to 400ha the following year.
"We decided just to step back slightly as we went through some more tricky situations on the New Zealand front with some of the weather impacts and also some of the supply chain constraints that we'd seen."

Meanwhile, he said
strong sales
were reflected in good demand from European Union markets like Germany, France and Spain, and North American market too, offset by lowered confidence in Asian markets.
"We've increased both volume and value in our key markets despite downward pressure in the category and surpassed a significant milestone in reaching $5 billion in global fruit sales, exceeding our longstanding sales goal set a decade ago," he said.
"We're returning really strong value to our growers, with our highest ever recorded direct returns to the New Zealand industry, breaking the $3 billion threshold in 2024/25."
He said it would be good for growers to see the positive financial results.
"[Growers] have invested heavily in the brand and our supply chain for the last decade, but also had some pretty challenging seasons in recent memory as well."
Te Brake said for this season, 2025/26, it had been an exceptional harvest, and it was 20 percent through its sales programme with plenty more work to do.

The 12-month pilot got underway on Tuesday, as part of the government's broader overhauls to health and safety. The workplace relations and safety minister Brooke van Velden has shifted WorkSafe's focus from enforcement to advice , telling the agency to work with businesses and individuals to manage risks. Her letter of expectation told WorkSafe to establish the hotline for businesses and individuals to report excessive road cone use traffic management requirements, with follow-up inspections where necessary. A WorkSafe spokesperson said as at 4:30pm on Tuesday, it had received 98 reports. Van Velden said the road cone policy would be the most "front-facing" that people would see, as most people were not going onto dangerous work sites. She said there were originally suggestions of a road cone phone line, but she went against it and suggested a digital system as it would need fewer resources and staffing. "I want people when they're out on the streets, taking their kids to school or heading to work, to know that if they see a roadcone... it's there for harm. Whereas at the moment, there are so many road cones that people are ignoring them." Transport minister Chris Bishop said the use of road cones was regulated in various ways, but NZTA had a role to play. "NZTA is not responsible for all the roads around the country. They're responsible for State Highways, but often people have road cone issues on local roads, which are the responsibility of the contractor, who's ultimately responsible to the local council, who sets the rules around that," he said. "There's temporary traffic management in place around particular events, which has been and can be quite overzealous." Bishop said there would continue to be cones on the road, as the government had made significant investments in road maintenance. Labour leader Chris Hipkins was not in favour of the hotline. "It's a total waste of time. Ultimately, WorkSafe should be focused on keeping people alive at work, making sure that all of our workplaces are safe, not worrying about road cones."

Photo: RNZ/Carol Stiles Sheet metal from outbuildings and copperwires from frost fans are among some of the things being targeted by thieves for scrap metal amidst an increase on orchard thefts in Bay of Plenty. Te Puke police sergeant Mike Owens said since January they'd had close to 40 such burglaries, adding those were just the ones reported to police. "Items that get targeted are farm vehicles, equipment, tools, diesel from frost fans, other machinery, trailers, solar panels and of course the frost fans also have batteries attached to them as well." He said it was an unfortunately common experience for growers and farmers during the busy harvest season, when many might be travelling between sites or have additional people on-farm. Taking preventative measures was key to deterring these kind of thefts, he said. Things like storing equipment securely away or out of view. "Generally good locks, good security makes it more difficult. "Farmers and orchardists being lovely rural people will tend to leave keys in their vehicle or sheds and equipment unlocked." Owens said some frost fans had been rigged up with sensor lights and alarms which acted as a good deterrence. "I've seen footage where that has immediately deterred, obviously an alarms come one deterred the thief, and off they've gone again." Police recently executed search warrants and recovered a large number of items which they were in the process of returning to their owners. Owens said it was important for growers and farmers to report these kinds of incidents to police. He said it was also helpful to make note of any identifying features of items which might be targeted which might help with recovery efforts.

Trade Me sale will not alter commitment to news

The company has agreed to sell 50 percent of Stuff Digital , which runs the Stuff website and ThreeNews, to online marketplace Trade Me. Under the agreement, Stuff's property section will become Trade Me Property branded, with listings, ads and some content shared across both platforms. Stuff Group chief executive Sinead Boucher told Morning Report the change was about expanding and diversifying the business. "We've done a very good job over the last five years of securing our own future. But we're in a industry and in a world where there is lots of change, lots of things still to be done and lots of opportunity," she said. "We want to make sure we're in the best position to harness that and keep growing." Since last July, Stuff has been providing an evening news bulletin, replacing the former Newshub news service, after the company announced an agreement with Warner Bros Discovery New Zealand. "There isn't going to be any changes as a result of this deal to any of our products or our staff of people," Boucher said. "Whatever happens to that, that's up to Warner Brothers, it's not up to Stuff." Boucher said she had no concerns about the future business moves of Trade Me's owners. Trade Me was bought by private equity company Apax Partners in 2019. Stuff's mastheads, The Post, the Press and the Waikato Times, its events business and Neighbourly were not included in the deal. Last year the media company was divided in two - Stuff Digital and Masthead Publishing which runs newspaper brands and its own websites. "[Masthead Publishing] is also a very digitally focused business," Boucher said. "It has spent the last couple of years building up very strong subscription audiences. We have re-positioned The Post for example as a national publication around politics, business, economics, etc. That's continuing to go really well for us." Boucher did not rule out a future sale of the mastheads but said she had no immediate plans to do so. "We're in media, nobody should ever say 'always' or 'nevers', but that's certainly not on my agenda at the moment." The property section of Stuff would be clearly delineated, Boucher said. Meanwhile, former editor of the New Zealand Herald and media commentator Gavin Ellis said the Herald had been drifting of late and there had been a clear signal that there needed to be more media experience on the board. He was commenting after media company NZME, which owns the New Zealand Herald and Newstalk ZB, revamped its board . Canadian businessman and activist shareholder Jim Grenon launched a bid to replace the board with himself and three associates. He ended up with a seat on the board and former National government minister Steven Joyce has taken over as chair. Ellis welcomed the appointment of Joyce who brought not only political expertise but also a lengthy association with the radio industry. He was a lot more "nuanced" than people realised and would be good for the board. However, he was less sure about the impact of Grenon and his attitude to editorial matters. "New Zealand media for as long as I can remember have been free of political interfence from their boards." Editorial independence was "a precious thing to preserve". "I think that anybody who crosses that editorial line does so at their peril. I think the paper would suffer and levels of trust would suffer." No assurances had been given so far, Ellis said, and the Herald's soon to be created Editorial Advisory Board should have a binding charter which should be made public.
