Zane's Law landfill summit calls for homes to be 'safe space'
A father whose seven-year-old son who died during severe floods says homes "should always be a safe space" on the day of a summit about toxic landfills.Campaigners from more than 20 communities experiencing "severe and sometimes fatal harms from toxic landfill and contaminated water" will speak at Wednesday's Zane's Law summit, organisers said. They include Kye and Nicole Gbangbola, whose son Zane died after the River Thames flooded their Surrey home in 2014.His parents disputed the results of an inquest in 2016 and say their son was killed by gas washed out of a former landfill site in Chertsey.
At his inquest, the coroner concluded Zane was killed by carbon monoxide from a petrol pump used to clear flood water from the family home in Chertsey.Zane's parents will join Dirty Water Campaign, Gas Communities United, Corby Childhood Cancer, and the Environment Secretary Steve Reed at a gathering at the Houses of Parliament.The coalition of landfill campaigns have come together calling for Zane's law, which Mr Gbangbola described as "enforceable law to protect communities from the dangers of toxic landfill and polluted water".Other speakers will include Des Collins, the solicitor who represented families affected by the toxic waste scandal in Corby, dramatised in the recent Netflix series Toxic Town.
'Action is needed'
Mr Gbangbola told BBC Radio Surrey the summit would bring together campaigns from "all across the country that up until this point have really been unheard"."When they come together they move through an understanding that it's not only them, there's others across the country, other communities experiencing such harm and death," he added.He claimed the issues of those living near toxic landfills ranged from respiratory issues, through to birth defects, tumours, neurological and immune system damage and homes which could be valued at zero."Our homes should always be a safe space, when you're experiencing these impacts simply from living in proximity to landfill it becomes a time when action is needed," he said.
Baroness Natalie Bennett, who will chair the hybrid meeting, said current UK regulations on contaminated land were "grossly inadequate" and a threat to the safety of many.Several local authorities have passed motions calling for Zane's Law.The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs has been contacted for comment.

The chancellor has refused to say if the government will apologise for dismissing calls for a national public inquiry into grooming gangs after the prime minister U-turned on the matter last night. One person familiar with the report said it details the institutional failures in treating young girls and cites a decade of lost action from the IICSA, set up in 2014 to investigate grooming gangs in Rotherham. The report is also expected to link illegal immigration with the exploitation of young girls. The grooming gang scandal came back into the headlines at the beginning of the year after Elon Musk attacked Sir Keir and safeguarding minister Jess Philips for failing children. The prime minister and Ms Phillips hit back, with Sir Keir citing his record of prosecuting abusers as director of public prosecutions, while Ms Phillips has long been a campaigner against domestic violence.

A MAN and a woman were mauled by a "Bully-type dog" in a horror attack at a home — with police confirming they have seized three dogs from the scene. The man, in his 30s, and the woman, in her 20s, suffered serious injuries after a horrific dog attack on Havelock Street at 2.38am on June 15. Both individuals were rushed to hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. Police have seized the bully-type dog involved in the vicious attack, along with two other dogs that were at the scene. Shocking moment pedestrian is run over by reversing car before being hit AGAIN - as man is arrested over 'attempted murder'
Distressing footage shows the moment a pedestrian was knocked down by a reversing car before being hit again just seconds later by the same vehicle. The incident, which happened in Limehouse, East London on Saturday evening, occurred between two cars on a residential street lined with terraced homes. The victim, a man in his 40s, was rushed to hospital following the ordeal while an 18-year-old man was today arrested on suspicion of murder, police confirmed. In footage posted on social media, the pedestrian in orange clothing is brutally knocked backwards when a white car dangerously reverses onto the pavement, narrowly missing a grey vehicle sat still on the road. In a baffling turn of events, the white car then aggressively drives forward before the man - who has just managed to stand up - is able to get out the way, sending him flying through the air. The white vehicle then smashes into the grey car in the road, while the victim lies face down on the street. Next, a ferocious row breaks out between a female witness and the people inside the white vehicle, as she wrestles to open the left-side back door shouting 'open the f****** car'. 'Call the police, call the f****** police, get out the car,' she adds. Four men get out the vehicle, before the female witness enters a physical fight with one of the passengers. Meanwhile, the man who got out the driver's side front door, wearing a bright blue outfit, appears to calmly step over the victim still lying still in the road before getting something out the car and running off. Another man who was in the back seat also appears to do a runner as he flees the scene, leaving the victim face down in the road. Horrified onlookers watch on in fear and horror as the group angrily scream at each other in broad daylight. Today, police revealed the incident was one of two to happen yesterday evening involving the same car. An initial ordeal had previously taken place in nearby Morpeth Street in Bethnal Green, which saw a man in his 20s taken to hospital after being hit by the vehicle. A second person was also hit but his condition remains unknown. An 18-year-old man was today arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, and remains in police custody. Police are making urgent enquiries to trace the other three people in the car, whose whereabouts are currently unknown. A Met Police spokesperson said: 'Around 21:15hrs on Saturday, 14 June, officers attended Morpeth Street, E2, alongside the London Ambulance Service, where the first incident took place. 'One man, aged in his 20s, was taken to hospital, where his injuries were assessed as non-life-changing and non-life-threatening. The condition of the second victim is unknown, and we are urging him to contact the police. 'Shortly afterwards, police were called to nearby Eastfield Street, E14, after reports of a second collision. Paramedics treated a man in his 40s at the scene for injuries. He was taken to hospital, where his condition was assessed as non-life-changing and non-life-threatening. 'The four occupants of the vehicle left the scene on foot. On Sunday, 15 June, an 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He has been taken into police custody, where he remains.
