For many, AI remains a means of distraction or as entertainment — but in the right hands, it offers the means to prototype, iterate, and launch digital products and services.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and former Apple chief designer Jony Ive announced their partnership on May 21, a deal both believe will bear revolutionary, AI-powered devices. 'We have the opportunity to completely reimagine what it means to use a computer,' Altman declared in a joint interview with Ive, who later said, 'I am absolutely certain that we are literally on the brink of a new generation of technology that can make us our better selves.' Apple's shares fell 2.3% on the day of the announcement, extending their 17% decline year-to-date ahead of Wednesday's open in New York. Altman and Ive plan to release a range of form factors (computer and phone) by the end of 2026, as well as a mystery, undisclosed design. Altman hinted that the two tech revolutionists 'Formed with the mission of figuring out how to create a family of devices that would let people use AI to create all sorts of wonderful things.' The collaboration stems from OpenAI's $6.5 billion acquisition – the largest purchase in the company's history – of Ive's io, co-founded with former Apple executives Tang Tan, Scott Cannon, and Evans Hankey. If there's anyone who can challenge Apple, it's Ive, a legendary tech designer Steve Jobs once referred to as his 'spiritual partner.' The British-born designer, responsible for the iPhone, iPad, iPod, iMac, and Apple Watch, led Apple's design team for twenty-seven iconic years (1992-2019). 'I have a growing sense that everything I have learned over the last 30 years has led me to this place and to this moment,' Ive spoke on his new venture with Altman. With a lineup of industry experts and former Apple veterans at Altman and Ive's disposal, the merger appears equipped to challenge Cook's market share. Image: Pexels In an age where digital technology is interwoven into the very fabric of childhood experiences, Kaspersky's annual report on children's digital interests, covering the period from May 2024 to April 2025, sheds light on the rapidly shifting landscape of what captivates young minds. With 8-10-year-olds spending around six hours daily on screens, and preteens averaging nine hours, understanding these trends has never been more crucial for parents. This year's findings reveal a burgeoning interest in artificial intelligence (AI), highlighting the integration of tools like chatbots into children's daily lives. Concerns For the first time, has entered the list of popular applications, showcasing a substantial uptick in AI-related searches. The report indicates that over 7.5% of all search queries by children pertained to AI chatbots, a sharp increase from just 3.19% the previous year. Notable names in this space include ChatGPT and Gemini, signalling that the youth are not just curious observers but active participants in the AI phenomenon. However, the rise of AI tools comes with its share of concerns. In a fascinating twist, the report also highlights the rise of "brainrot" memes—an absurd, chaotic style of humour that has captured children's collective imagination. The buzz around the Italian phrase "tralalero tralala" and the meme track 'tung tung tung sahur' showcases the fun and unpredictability of meme culture among younger audiences. While memes constituted a smaller portion of overall searches, they retain significance in how children connect and share humour online. The report introduces a newcomer gaining traction: Sprunki, a rhythm-based game combining music and motion that has quickly ascended in popularity. With its dash of colour and addictive gameplay, Sprunki finds itself among the top five most searched gaming topics on YouTube alongside mainstays like Brawl Stars and Roblox, showing that gameplay remains a staple in children's online interactions. Familiar habits Familiar habits persist in children's online behaviours, with almost 18% of searches aimed at video streaming platforms. YouTube has decisively established itself as the favourite platform, rising from 28.13% to 29.77% in overall usage time, with WhatsApp stepping up to second place with 14.72%. This shift signals a transformation in communication styles as children increasingly utilise chat applications to share links, memes, and short videos. Amid a thriving gaming environment, favourite titles like Roblox and Minecraft continue to dominate, along with the emerging popularity of the free game portal Poki, which offers a multitude of accessible games, cementing the appeal of fast-paced and quickly gratifying content. 'This year's trends show just how fast children's digital culture is evolving,' remarks Anna Larkina, a privacy expert at Kaspersky. 'When parents take time to understand what their children are watching, playing, or searching for, it opens the door to meaningful conversations and helps build safer, more trusting digital habits.'

Over the past few years it's been predicted that robots will live amongst. In 2025, we are beginning to see signs that they almost here. Some of the leading technology companies are developing their humanoid robots. Tesla Optimus is is a general-purpose robotic humanoid under development by Tesla, it was announced at the company's Artificial Intelligence (AI) Day event on August 19, 2021, and a prototype was shown in 2022. What's interesting about the robot is that the Tesla CEO Elon Musk thinks Optimus "has the potential to be more significant than Tesla's vehicle business over time." There's a belief that humanoid robots will form part of future workforce and human companions. Video Player is loading. It's a full-sized bipedal robot designed with advanced features like 21 joints, a 3D visual spatial system, and the ability to sense human emotions and interpret environments. The robot is part of Xiaomi's Cyber series, which also includes the CyberDog and CyberDog 2 quadrupedal robots. CyberOne was first unveiled in August 2022 and is a functional humanoid robot, not just a concept. One notable development so far about humanoid robots is that there's one being developed in South Africa as well. Although it's still early days, the robot has been introduced as an innovative research platform by the Stellenbosch University, Department of Electrical Engineering. It is designed to advance the field of humanoid to the university this state-of-the-art platform highlights sophisticated robotics technology and exemplifies the benefits of interdisciplinary collaboration in engineering. The humanoid robot stands fully assembled, built around a total of 38 degrees of freedom (DOF)—including dual 6-DOF arms, two neck joints, and dexterous five-finger hands on each side—the design closely mirrors human upper-body mobility. It's also equipped with a webcam for vision tracking and advanced software, the robot can analyse and replicate human movements in real time, enhancing its human-like functionality. An on-board NVIDIA GPU accelerates vision processing and large-language-model (LLM) inference, enabling voice-initiated commands and natural dialogue with operators. Although the SA developed robot is far from what has been developed by Tesla and Xiaomi it's an indicator of what the future will look like. I foresee that in the near future we will own/buy robots in the same way that we acquire cars. They will form part of our tools and possessions. We will probably use them in our factories and at our homes to carry out complex tasks that are beyond us in terms of energy and time. As the field of robotics advances it will surprise us in ways that we have not imagined. We now have a choice to prepare for them to enter society. At a policy level we need to start thinking about what it will mean to have humanoid robots amongst us. What kind of advantages they will bring as well as risks. If we are to live harmoniously with them we need to start preparing now for a world that will include humanoid robots. As engineers are building humanoid robots in South Africa, it is my hope that they are initiating conversations that will assist with the integration of robots in society. Latest technologies have not been well introduced to society and that has led to negative effects at least in the beginning. Humanoid robots can form part of improving our productivity and quality of life. We just just need to prepare for them now.
