US Warns Pirelli Risks Restrictions Due to Chinese Investor

Bloomberg6 days ago

The US government warned Italy's Pirelli & C. SpA that vehicles containing its advanced sensors technology could be restricted from sale in America due to concerns over the influence of the tiremaker's Chinese investor.
The informal advisory, outlined in a letter dated April 25 by the Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security — known as BIS — said that car manufacturers that incorporate the so-called CyberTyre technology into their completed connected vehicles would likely need to apply for a specific authorization to sell those cars in the US.

Former UFC fighters file lawsuits, alleging the MMA promotion restricts their earning potential

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Two former UFC fighters have filed antitrust lawsuits against the mixed-martial arts behemoth, alleging it operates as a monopoly that restricts their ability to maximize earnings. Phil Davis and Mikhail Cirkunovs, who fought under the name Misha Cirkunov, filed their lawsuits in U.S. District Court in Nevada against the Las Vegas-based UFC. Cirkunovs' complaint was filed on May 23, and Davis' was filed six days later. Philadelphia-based Berger Montague, which is represented locally by Las Vegas' Claggett and Sykes, is the law firm for both fighters. A message left with the Las Vegas firm on Monday was not immediately returned. Cirkunovs is seeking $75,000 in damages. Davis didn't specify how much money he is suing for. The UFC reached a $375 million settlement in September in a class-action antitrust lawsuit brought by Cung Le, who filed his claim in 2014. The UFC has not reached an agreement with Kajan Johnson, who filed his lawsuit in 2021. Both recent complaints made references to the Johnson case, with the Cirkunovs' suit saying they were similar. 'In previous hearings, Plaintiffs' own counsel expressed strong concerns to the Court about the weaknesses of the Johnson claims,' the UFC said in a statement. 'This new complaint (Cirkunovs) confirms that the plaintiffs in the Johnson case lack the standing to represent the proposed class. 'In addition, it confirms that the majority of fighters signed class-action waivers and agreed to arbitrate their claims instead of resorting to court procedures. We are confident that the facts and the law are on our side in opposing approval of both of these proposed classes.' Davis fought in the UFC from 2010-15 before signing with Bellator MMA, which became the Professional Fighters League this year. He argues that the UFC's presence prevents fighters who aren't even in the organization from receiving competitive wages. Cirkunovs was in the UFC from 2015-22. ___ AP sports:

F.T.C. Investigates Ad Groups and Watchdogs, Alleging Boycott Collusion

The Federal Trade Commission is investigating whether roughly a dozen prominent advertising and advocacy groups violated antitrust law by coordinating boycotts among advertisers that did not want their brands to appear alongside hateful online content, three people familiar with the inquiries said. The inquiry includes the agency's previously reported investigation of Media Matters, a liberal advocacy organization that has published research on hateful and antisemitic content on X, the social media company owned by Elon Musk, along with other advocacy groups and advertising industry organizations. Vanessa Otero, the chief executive of Ad Fontes Media, a media watchdog group, said the organization received a letter from the F.T.C. on May 20 demanding information about its business in relation to an investigation about 'possible collusion.' Nearly a dozen other organizations also received such letters, two people familiar with the matter said. The F.T.C.'s investigation into Media Matters, which is aligned with Democrats, required the organization to share copies of its budgets, documents showing the effects of 'harmful' online content on advertisers and communications with other watchdog groups. Advertisers have cut and frozen spending on X and several other conservative social media platforms in recent years as brands worried about appearing alongside inflammatory content. Mr. Musk, who has been a close adviser to President Trump, sued Media Matters in 2023 over claims that it tried to damage X's relationship with advertisers. That lawsuit continues. The F.T.C. declined to comment, citing its practice of not commenting on active investigations. This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

NYC files legal challenge against ICE over arrest of Bronx student

New York City is taking legal action against federal immigration officials after a Bronx public school student was arrested and sent for expedited deportation after a routine asylum hearing. The suit against Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Acting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Todd Lyons and their departments seeks the student's release from ICE custody. New York City challenges federal immigration officials New York City claims the student, identified as Dylan, is being detained without cause and in violation of his right to due process. The 20-year-old Ellis Prep High School student was arrested two weeks ago at federal immigration court in Lower Manhattan. His arrest sparked chaotic protests in the city. Mayor Eric Adams, who has a close working relationship with President Trump and White House "border czar" Tom Homan, took issue with the arrest Monday, saying the student went through the "exact legal proceedings" he was supposed to in order to get work papers and be able to provide for his family. "But instead of being rewarded for following the law, he was punished for doing what we all asked him to do," Adams' statement said. "For generations, New York City has been defined by its diverse immigrant communities, and we are sending a message to those communities. We stand with you, and you deserve to live your lives freely." When asked about the case last week, Adams told CBS News New York the city had no role in the student's arrest and that sanctuary laws prohibit coordinating with ICE. Uptick in ICE arrests NYC The suit, backed by Adams, comes amid a major uptick in ICE arrests at courthouses over the last two weeks, apparently to meet Mr. Trump's demand to increase arrest quotas. Congressman Dan Goldman said he confronted ICE agents arresting asylum seekers at routine court appearances last week. "These are people seeking legal status here the right way," Goldman said Sunday on "The Point with Marcia Kramer." "None of these people are criminals, none of them are murderers or child rapists. None of that." There's concern the arrests will drive other immigrants into the shadows. "It also creates really perverse incentives," Goldman said. "So other people must react to this and say, well, if I go to court, I'm gonna get picked up and kicked out, so I'm not gonna go to court, and I'm gonna go further underground, and I'm not gonna pay taxes through my work visa, and I'm not gonna pay social security ... which creates more desperation." New York City is home to more than 3 million immigrants, that's 40% of its population, who are key to the local economy. The city's lawsuit argues it is wrong to arrest people who are following immigration laws.
