76 new Covid-19 cases in state, 27 in Mumbai
MUMBAI: As many as 76 new Covid-19 cases were reported in Maharashtra on May 29, taking the total number of cases in the state since January 1 to 597, according to the state health department.
Of the new cases reported on Thursday, 27 were detected in Mumbai, 21 in Pune, 12 in Thane, eight in the Kalyan Municipal Corporation limits, four in Navi Mumbai, one in the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation, one in the Ahilyanagar Municipal Corporation and two in Raigad district.
In Mumbai, the total number of Covid cases since January is 379, according to the department. Also, since January, 9,592 Covid tests were conducted in the state.
According to the state public health department, the spike in Covid-19 cases aligns with seasonal patterns of respiratory illnesses, and most infections remain mild or asymptomatic. Health officials have intensified surveillance and testing for Covid-19 in light of rising influenza-like illnesses (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI), especially in urban clusters.
The authorities attribute the low severity of Covid cases to widespread vaccination coverage and natural immunity in the population.
As monsoon-related respiratory illnesses rise, distinguishing Covid-19 from the flu has become a clinical priority. Dr Dhiraj Bhattad, consultant, internal medicine at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, said, 'Both flu and Covid-19 can cause fever, sore throat, cough, cold, headache, body ache and fatigue. But loss of taste and smell is a distinct sign of Covid. Interestingly, flu cases currently seem to have more intense symptoms than Covid. This may be because most people are already vaccinated against Covid.'

Bhopal: According to Thursday's MOHFW monitoring, MP currently maintains 30 active COVID-19 cases, representing approximately 0.6% of India's total 4,866 active cases. As for availability of booster doses show limited effectiveness, expert highlighted the need for updated vaccines targeting new variants. Some experts remind the current trend close to that observed during 2022, when omicron cases showed seasonal patterns. Clinical COVID-19 diagnoses relied on CT scans, with sporadic occurrences. Minister: Post summer vacation, schools to follow Covid norms
1 2 Bhubaneswar: In view of the rising Covid-19 cases, school and mass education minister Nityananda Gond said the state govt will enforce safety protocols in schools when they reopen later this month after the summer vacation. As many as 23 Covid cases have been recorded in Odisha in the last month (as of Wednesday). Gond said students and teachers need to remain cautious and alert. "All students and teachers will be asked to adhere to Covid-19 safety protocols when schools resume. The health and safety of the children is our top priority," Gond told media persons on Thursday. The school and mass education department will strictly follow the guidelines of the health department to ensure the safety of children. "Students and teachers will be asked to wear masks and those suffering from cold and cough or feeling unwell will be asked not to come to school. Teachers will be sensitised on Covid-19 protocols and safety guidelines," Gond said. The department will issue guidelines to all district education officers in the state soon to ensure strict adherence to hygiene protocols.

Seven more test positive for Covid-19 in city, active cases touch 39
Surat/Vadodara: Seven more people tested positive for Covid-19 in the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) area on Thursday, bringing the total number of cases to 89, with 39 active cases. Seven are hospitalised, of whom two require oxygen support. Among the newly infected is a 77-year-old retired male from Vesu with a history of high blood pressure, currently under home isolation care. A 71-year-old homemaker from Ghoddod Road, who has both thyroid and blood pressure issues, is also being treated at home and is stable. A 38-year-old female judge from Athwalines, who recently returned from Dwarka on May 25, tested positive. She is under home isolation and responding well to treatment. Other cases include a 24-year-old employed male from Lal Darwaja with a thyroid condition, a 52-year-old diabetic male from Palanpur Jakatanaka, a 40-year-old homemaker from Varachha who returned from Uttar Pradesh on May 25, and a 56-year-old diabetic female social worker from Parle Point who returned from Kolhapur on June 1. As per govt protocol, all patients' samples have been sent to the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre (GBRC), Gandhinagar, for genome sequencing to detect any emerging variants. In Vadodara city, six Covid-19 cases were reported in the 24 hours ending Thursday evening — the first in the ongoing wave. All patients showed flu-like symptoms and are under home isolation. According to sources, the infections are sub-variants of the Omicron strain, with low hospitalisation rates. Mistry added that testing and isolation facilities are available at SSG Hospital and GMERS Hospital, Gotri. Both hospitals are equipped with oxygen support, ICU, and ventilators.
