Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani accorded Guard of Honour; mortal remains handed over to family with state honours
Gandhinagar (Gujarat) [India], June 16 (ANI): The demise of former Chief Minister of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani, has deeply saddened the entire state. On Monday, the State Government accorded him a solemn and dignified farewell, honouring his legacy and distinguished service to public life with utmost respect, as per a release from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).
Today, in the presence of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the mortal remains of the late leader were accorded a Guard of Honour as per the official government guidelines. Following the tribute, the mortal remains were respectfully handed over to his family members, including his wife and son, with state honours. The entire process was conducted solemnly and in strict adherence to government protocol.
The State Government paid tribute to former CM Vijay Rupani, remembering his visionary leadership, integrity, and compassion in public life and his contributions to public welfare.
At Civil Hospital, CM Bhupendra Patel was joined by Health Minister Rushikesh Patel, Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi, Cooperation Minister Jagdish Vishwakarma, Rajya Sabha MP Mayank Nayak, along with several political leaders, senior officials, and representatives from various institutions and communities who gathered to pay their respects.
Earlier in the day, the mortal remains of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani were brought to Rajkot on Monday for his final rites, scheduled to take place at Ramnathpara crematorium in the evening. The funeral procession will begin from his residence at 5 pm.
The Rajkot Police have implemented comprehensive security measures and traffic restrictions to facilitate the procession. DCP Crime Parthraj Singh Gohil advised citizens to use designated parking areas during the event.
'Today, the last rites of former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani will be performed. That's why VIPs from across the state will move here. In this regard, we have closed the main route decided for the procession. Adequate parking arrangements have been made at different places, and we have appealed to the people to park their vehicles in the parking spaces only,' DCP Crime, Parthraj Singh Gohil, told ANI.
Rupani was among the 241 who died when the London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff, colliding with a doctor's hostel complex near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
On 12th June, the state was engulfed in grief following the passing of former CM Vijay Rupani in the tragic plane crash.
Meanwhile, in the Ahmedabad plane crash, out of the 242 people involved, the sole survivor, Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin, is currently undergoing treatment for his injuries.
Additionally, at least 33 others, including local residents and MBBS students, lost their lives on the ground. (ANI)

Kolkata: In chargesheet, ED says Pak man ran hawala network, forged papers
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a chargesheet under the anti-money laundering law against a Pakistani national, Ajad Mallik, who had been illegally living in Kolkata using forged Indian and Bangladeshi identity documents. In a statement released by the ED on June 13, it said a Prosecution Complaint (PC) was filed before the Special Court under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), Kolkata. The agency began investigating Mallik after an FIR was lodged by the West Bengal Police under Sections 14 and 14A of the Foreigners Act, 1946. According to the ED, Mallik, also known by aliases Ahammed Hossain Azad and Azad Hossain, had fraudulently acquired multiple Indian government IDs, including an Aadhaar card, voter ID, PAN card, Indian passport, and driving licence. The ED initially suspected Mallik to be a Bangladeshi national, but a Pakistani driving licence recovered from his mobile phone, dating back to 1994 revealed his actual identity. The licence bore the name 'Azad Hossain', listed his father's name as Mumtaz-ul-Haque, and provided a permanent address in Hyderabad, Pakistan. His date of birth was recorded as August 14, 1971. ED officers arrested Mallik on April 15, 2025, following a search operation that revealed his role in creating fraudulent identity documents for illegal immigrants in exchange for money. He was taken into ED custody for 14 days and is currently in judicial custody. The ED found that Mallik ran a 'hawala network' facilitating illegal cross-border payments between India and Bangladesh. He collected payments through cash and UPI in India and transferred equivalent amounts to Bangladesh using mobile payment platforms like Bkash. He was also allegedly involved in forging documents for Bangladeshi nationals seeking visas and passports to travel to countries such as Dubai, Cambodia, and Malaysia. 'He collected payments in Bangladeshi Taka, US Dollars, or Indian Rupees and either deposited these into his own bank accounts or those of his associates engaged in fraudulent visa/passport processing,' the ED said. Investigators also found that Mallik was connected to certain Kolkata-based forex firms (FFMCs), where large sums of cash were deposited under the guise of legitimate foreign currency exchanges. In reality, these were proceeds of crime linked to illegal identity creation for Bangladeshi nationals. In an earlier update, the ED revealed that Mallik's wife, Maymuna Akhter, and two sons,Osama Bin Azad and Omar Faruk,live in Bangladesh. He reportedly made frequent visits to meet them despite lacking valid travel documents. The ED said that further investigation is underway.

Indians turning to Artificial Intelligence for news, influencers find big audience: report
Influencers on social media platforms and generative AI are 'supercharging a fragmented alternative media environment' for news consumption, the 2025 edition of the Digital News Report by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism said. The report is based on an annual survey of 1 lakh news consumers in 48 countries, including India. Among respondents who 'avoid the news' some or all the time, English-speaking Indians with internet access — which the report warns may not be representative of the entire population — rank fourth, with 50% of respondents in the country counting themselves in the group. Broadcasting, print media and news websites are seeing engagement fall, the report found, as the share of news consumed through social media platforms such as YouTube and online aggregators expands, the report said. Influencers, in particular, have gained a sizeable audience, even particularly in news. While this includes the podcaster Joe Rogan, the trend is also visible in other countries, such as HugoDécrypte, a French 'young news creator' whose content reaches over a fifth of people under the age of 35 in France. 'In the Philippines, Thailand, Kenya, and India more people now say they prefer to watch the news rather than read it, further encouraging the shift to personality-led news creators,' the report said. Globally, trust in news as assessed by the report stayed at the same level as it was last year — 40%. Young people are less likely to consume news from publishers' websites, with around 41% of respondents aged between 18 and 34 saying that they consider social media and sites such as YouTube as their main source of news. Only around 24% in this age group consider news websites as their 'main source of news,' the report said. 'YouTube content in India has been exploding in recent years with a host of successful talk shows that are both critical of and supportive of the government of Narendra Modi,' the report said. 'Ravish Kumar (12m followers) is a former NDTV anchor, focusing on political commentary and social issues, while Dhruv Rathee (25m followers) creates educational videos on social, political, and environmental issues, aiming to simplify complex topics for a broad audience. Shows like The Deshbhakt (5.5m followers), hosted by Akash Banerjee, offer satirical takes on Indian politics. Other colourful parts of the Indian manosphere include Ranveer Allahbadia, popularly known as BeerBiceps, who covers fitness, lifestyle, fashion, and entrepreneurship, aimed at young Indians.' 'Messaging apps such as WhatsApp are mostly considered less of a [mis- and disinformation] threat' by respondents, the report said, 'as discussion tends to be more contained within trusted groups of friends.' 'One notable exception is India, the messaging app's largest market, where fake news, including videos circulating in large groups, have in the past incited mob violence (and deaths). Just over one in ten (11%) think that people they know (including friends and family) also play a role in spreading misinformation,' the report said. 'Personalized' news, such as those offered by news aggregators, has 'seen many false dawns,' the report said, but generative AI applications such as ChatGPT and Perplexity AI have been seeing increased traction for simplifying stories and summarising them, the report found. 'In India, it is the most popular option,' the report said. AI 'comfort levels' among Indian respondents stood at 44%, with nearly a fifth of users saying they used chatbots to get the news weekly.
