1964 Pontiac GTO Being Sold by the Original Owner's Family on BaT

Yahoo15-03-2025

The '64 Pontiac GTO is the first of the muscle cars, and this one features a window-rattling V-8 and a four-speed manual transmission.
The options on this example are extensive and include suspension and frame upgrades.
Impressively, this car has been in the same family since new.
For many a gearhead, automotive enthusiasm is a genetic trait, something passed down from your mom or dad. So just imagine being in grade school in the early 1970s and this black-on-black Pontiac GTO rumbling up on a Friday afternoon, just as the school bell rings. Hop in, kid, we're going for ice cream and Hot Wheels. This 1964 Pontiac GTO, up for sale on Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos), is just about the coolest dadmobile ever. Bought new by the current seller's father in New Jersey, it's a great spec, with a four-speed manual, a heavy-duty frame, and a limited-slip rear differential. This was the first year for the GTO, which technically was an option package you could order on the Pontiac LeMans coupe. The LeMans was an intermediate-size car that should have been restricted to a maximum engine size of 330 cubic inches, based on GM's internal regulations. The rule was, a car had to have 10 pounds of weight for every cube of displacement, as this would keep things from getting too gnarly.
Pontiac was, at this time, establishing itself as a performance-oriented brand under the GM umbrella, and that image was not being helped by GM's 1963 ban on racing. So a young John DeLorean headed up an engineering team that aimed at squeezing out maximum street performance, hoping that would get buyers into showrooms. At the suggestion of Bill Collins, a member of the engineering team, the 389-cubic-inch engine from the larger Grand Prix was swapped in.Pontiac's creation is today considered the first of the muscle cars. DeLorean and his team got around GM's rulebook by offering the bigger engine as an option package, which included stiffer springs, an upgraded fan for better cooling, dual exhausts, and hood scoops that hinted that something fun was going on in the engine bay.
This car has the triple two-barrel carburetors, which means it was good for a stout 340 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque when new. A three-speed manual was the base offering for the GTO, but this car has the aforementioned four-speed stick shift. There was an engine rebuild 25 years ago, and a tuneup done in 2019. The odometer shows 88K miles.
The original owner of this GTO appears to have been a pilot with Pan Am, and the car comes with the kind of meticulous logbook you'd expect from that profession. The car itself also has an unusual specification in that it was ordered with the heavy-duty frame, quick-ratio power steering, and an additional handling package with stiffer shocks. Altogether, it's a true gearhead spec.
You'd be hard pressed to find a better-optioned GTO, so it's little wonder that this one stayed with the original owner so long. The winning bidder on this Pontiac is getting a very original car with excellent specifications. Should that be you, you'd better roll up to your own kid's school on Friday. Ice cream and burnouts for everyone.
The auction ends on March 18.

8 Hybrid Vehicles That Last Longer Than You Think and Are Worth the Money

As the technology behind electric vehicles (EVs) continues to evolve, the mileage range of EVs is growing too, with the electric rides able to go farther than ever before between charging sessions. For the most part, though, no battery-powered vehicle matches the range of a hybrid ride, which combines an internal combustion engine with an electric motor for more efficient fuel economy, fewer emissions, added power and greater affordability to fit your budget better. Read Next: For You: Perhaps most importantly, hybrid vehicles can quite simply go much, much farther than EVs before needing to refuel or recharge. To that end, GOBankingRates compiled a listing of some of the farthest-reaching hybrids on the market, cars with long-enough range to justify their occasionally steep prices. Range: 704 miles The Ford F-150 is currently the longest-range hybrid on the American market, per Kelley Blue Book, making it to just over 700 miles. The hybrid truck — which also comes in standard internal combustion models, as well as a full EV model — also gets 22 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city, 24 mpg on the highway and 23 mpg combined with its 30-gallon full tank alone. Discover More: Range: 688 miles Car and Driver wrote that, while not cheap, this hybrid Benz not only comes with a big batter and incredible fuel economy, but with amazing speed as well — hitting 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. Range: 686 miles Kelley Blue Book clocked the 2024 Toyota Camry as both the longest-range hybrid sedan on sale in America and the top-ranking Toyota. Range: 670 miles The Elantra comes in just under the Camry in both range and price, per Kelley Blue Book. Range: 655 miles Kelly Blue Book reported that the Sorento's 2025 interior has received a massive tech upgrade compared to prior models, but warned consumers to stick with the front-wheel drive model (FWD), as the All-Wheel Drive (AWD) model only has a 602-mile range, while the FWD manages 655 miles total. Range: 648 In addition to comfortable interior space and style, Kelly Blue Book touted the Sienna as the longest-range hybrid minivan available in America. Range: 644 There's a reason you always see a Prius on the road — they're reliable and have an incredible range. Kelly Blue Book offered one small caveat: while the FWD Prius has a range of 644 miles, the AWD model only reaches 567 miles. Range: 644 While the LC 500h is extremely pricey — starting in the six-figure range — it more than makes up for it with a sleek body design, very high-technology interiors and a range of 644 miles, making it the longest-range luxury coupe in America, according to Kelley Blue Book. GM doubles down on American manufacturing with $4B investment

General Motors is investing $4 billion in its U.S. plants over the next two years to boost the manufacturing of gas and electric vehicles. With the multibillion-dollar investment, the Michigan-based automaker will be able to assemble more than 2 million vehicles per year in the U.S. The latest investment comes just two weeks after the company announced it earmarked $888 million for its Tonawanda Propulsion plant near Buffalo, New York, to support production of its next-generation V-8 engine. Prior to the investments, the company was producing about 1.7 million vehicles in the U.S. It's just one of many automakers that have pledged to build vehicles in the U.S. and to support American jobs. 'We believe the future of transportation will be driven by American innovation and manufacturing expertise,' said GM CEO Mary Barra. The company's commitments, along with other heavy hitters in the industry, come as President Donald Trump imposes tariffs on imported vehicles to boost domestic auto manufacturing. In April, Trump imposed a 25% tariff on all imported passenger vehicles, followed by a separate 25% tariff on imported auto parts such as engines, transmissions, power-train parts and electrical components in May. 4 With the investment, GM will be able to assemble more than 2 million vehicles per year in the U.S. JHVEPhoto – 4 A worker installs an engine at the General Motors assembly plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana, US, on Tuesday, April 9, 2024. There are currently 50 GM manufacturing plants and parts facilities in 19 states, including 11 vehicle assembly plants. Plants in Michigan, Kansas and Tennessee will expand finished vehicle production of several of GM's most popular vehicles. At the Orion Assembly plant in Michigan, the automaker will begin production of gas-powered full-size SUVs and light-duty pickup trucks in early 2027 to help meet continued strong demand. Meanwhile, GM's Factory ZERO in Detroit-Hamtramck, Michigan, will be the dedicated assembly location for the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Cadillac Esccalade IQ and GMC Hummer EV pickup and SUV, according to GM. 4 A worker on the trim assembly line at the General Motors assembly plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana, US, on Tuesday, April 9, 2024. REUTERS At its Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas City, Kansas, GM will produce the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox beginning in mid-2027 after the company saw significant demand for the vehicle. Sales of the recently redesigned Equinox rose more than 30% year over year in the first quarter of 2025. The plant is on track to begin building the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV by the end of this year. Future investments in the plant will be geared toward GM's next generation of affordable EVs, according to GM. Meanwhile, GM will produce the gas-powered Chevrolet Blazer, the Cadillac Lyriq and Vistiq EVs, and the Cadillac XT5 at the Spring Hill Manufacturing plant in Tennessee. The company projected that its annual capital spending through 2027 will be in the range of $10 billion to $12 billion due to increased investment in the U.S., the prioritization of key programs and efficiency offsets.

GM's $4 billion US plant investment will allow production 'rebalance' in light of tariffs, slowing EV adoption

General Motors (GM) is making a big investment in its US production footprint — in part because of uncertainty over President Trump's tariffs. GM plans to invest $4 billion in certain US plants over the next two years to expand production of some vehicles and reshore production of others from Mexico. 'So as we look at our landscape, as we look at the world around us, whether it's the tariff situation, EV adoption, there's a real opportunity to rebalance some of our manufacturing,' GM CFO Paul Jacobson said to Yahoo Finance from the Deutsche Bank Auto Conference in Manhattan. GM said it will add production of the gas-powered Chevrolet Blazer and Chevrolet Equinox, which are currently made in Mexico, to the US starting in 2027. GM will also begin making gas-powered full-size SUVs like the Chevrolet Tahoe and light-duty pickup like the Silverado at its Orion Michigan plant, as well as shift EV production from that plant to the Factory Zero Michigan plant, which produces only EVs. GM said it was No. 1 in overall full-size pickup sales during Q1, which includes Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra models with more than 200,00 units sold — its best first quarter since 2007. GM said full-size pickups also had their best Q1 since 2007, with models like the Tahoe, Suburban, and GMC Yukon seeing sales up 31%. 'It's clear that EV demand has slowed a bit, so we're able to fill that back at Factory Zero and really convert Orion to a much better-utilized plant for full-size SUVs, which will get us some incremental capacity and help take some of the pressure off our team at Arlington [Texas], but also full-size trucks where we'll be able to fill that plant up and have a really secure future going forward for [internal combustion engine] production,' Jacobson said. While rebalancing is a positive in terms of production and shifting powertrains in light of consumer demand makes sense, the moves also address tariffs, at least in the near term. GM said in early May that it would take a $4 billion to $5 billion hit to EBIT due to tariff exposure, though it would mitigate up to 30% of that cost due to remediation and cost-cutting efforts. Jacobson said that GM's peak tariff exposure and impact would occur in the second quarter, as the new initiatives will take time to complete. And despite tariff uncertainty, Jacobson said GM has maintained pricing in the environment and even gained market share, despite others cutting prices. Read more: What Trump's tariffs mean for the economy and your wallet In terms of imports, GM hasn't thus far altered shipments in other markets including Korea, where the popular Buick Encore GX, Buick Envista, Chevy Trailblazer, and Chevy Trax are produced. Jacobson said GM's Mexico operations will still crank out vehicles and won't reduce production, but will eventually shift production for non-US export markets once GM's domestic production moves noted above come online.
