Barnsley vintage board games exhibition 'celebrates being quirky'
A board games trader who owns more than 600 titles has put her vintage collection on display as part of an art exhibition.Ann Jones' 155 classic games are on show at Barnsley Civic.Ms Jones, who was a teacher at a Barnsley college before launching her business in 2017, said the games were a great way to "bring people together" - and were of particular benefit to people with neurodiversities. She said: "For me, having been diagnosed [with autism] for a year now, it feels like a nice positive thing to do that celebrates me and my being a bit quirky."
Ms Jones, who says she knows the rules for every one of her games by heart, said: "I've always said board games are great for autistic people, which now includes me."Most of the chat is around the game in some way, and any other conversation comes more naturally."There's reduced expectation of eye contact too – it's not rude if I don't look at you when I speak, because I'm looking at the board."Crochet collections, anime figures, drag outfits and a display of rare Barnsley FC memorabilia are also on show at the exhibition.
After spending 17 years as an English teacher, Ms Jones moved to Horsforth in Leeds, and launched her business Cards or Die in the hope of a more "flexible and forgiving" work life."My main focus is on social isolation, so events might be aimed towards people with mental health difficulties, learning difficulties, or people who are disabled or neurodivergent," she said."It's about bringing people together. People say they've made friends who they wouldn't have met otherwise."She also holds sessions in pubs and corporate settings. The oldest item in her collection is Hearts from 1918, which people often request at weddings. She also has multiple copies of Connect 4, Battleship and Guess Who, all "classics" from the 1960s and 70s."People get talking, saying 'we used to play that at my grandma's', or 'I had that when I was a kid'," Ms Jones said.Older games appearing at the exhibition include Find the Fault and Jumbles, both from the 1940s.
Ms Jones said: "In Jumbles, you have to find the actors and countries in the letters which are all mixed up."The trouble is, it's countries that don't exist anymore and actors you've never heard of."Her love for board games runs in the family, she said, although her mum would tend to only play things she saw as educational."She bought me one called Equality – it's like scrabble but with numbers. It was the hardest thing in the world."Equality remains in Ms Jones' collection, although she described it as "horrific".Some of the older items will have to stay on shelves or podiums at the exhibition, which runs until August, due to them being so fragile.Ms Jones added: "I really love my vintage collection. "I hope if people see them, maybe they'll want to play them more."The exhibition is part of Come As You Really Are, a national showcase of hobbies set up by artist Hetain Patel and Artangel, a group which produces "extraordinary art in unusual places".

Naomi Campbell claims she has been 'misunderstood' by the public and reveals the lessons she wants to pass down to her children as she poses for striking cover shoot
Naomi Campbell insisted she has been 'misunderstood' by the public as she posed for a striking cover shoot with Dazed magazine. The model, 46, is as well known for her diva attitude as she is for striking good looks, but claimed that as a Gemini star sign, there are 'two sides' to her, mainly through exhibiting introverted and extroverted behaviour. She mused: 'That's where Geminis are misunderstood, but we are the ultimate communicators and connectors... 'I can't please everybody. All that I do is transparent, and I am very loyal to the people I love. I care about the people I love. I value my long relationships. 'In friendships, I don't have time for the word "frivolous". I don't associate with that word, it's not who I am. When I care, I care… but don't mistake my kindness for weakness.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Talk also turned to the lessons that she was hoping to impart on her children. The supermodel shocked the world when she announced the surprise birth of her daughter in 2021, followed by a son in 2023, both of whose names the catwalk queen has not made public. Discussing her parenting approach, she mused: 'I want to pass on the inner strength, the discipline. Pass on the things that were shared with me from my grandmother, my aunts and my mother. The most important thing for me is for my kids to be happy.' She added that she felt 'blessed' to be able to travel and see the world with her children like she had down with her own mother. Alongside the interview, Naomi posed for a striking photoshoot that saw her model an array of skimpy ensembles. She transformed into a butterfly for the cover snap, posing in a skintight mini dress and boasting large yellow wings. Naomi wore beads in her long dark hair for the shoot, while flashing her toned legs in a ruffled yellow gown. Another stunning snap saw her pose braless beneath a beaded mesh dress. Naomi wore beads in her long dark hair for the shoot, while flashing her toned legs in a ruffled yellow gown Naomi confirmed last year that she welcomed both her children via surrogate after becoming a mother for the first time in 2021 aged 50 and posed with the newborn on the cover of Vogue. She previously admitted that her daughter wasn't adopted before clarifying that she hadn't been pregnant herself as she discussed how much her children mean to her. Telling The Times: 'My babies are everything to me. It's made me fear for the future.' Naomi went on to explain that she was never looking for a father for her kids and is happy being 'a single mother of a single mum'. When asked whether she used a surrogate she replied: 'I did. I hope for a better world for my children. They are 110 per cent my priority. I have to be there for them on their first day at school.' Her daughter's arrival sparked widespread speculation that she used a surrogate, a popular approach among older celebrity mothers, because she was not spotted with an obvious baby bump in the months leading up to the birth. Naomi also spoke of her concern that younger generations are not interested in having children and she insisted parenthood is always 'worth it', no matter how difficult the circumstances. She said: 'I have heard a lot of young girls saying that it is too expensive to have children and they may not want them, and I have said, "You will change your mind. You will want to be a mum"'. 'I understand economically it is tough. But my mum had nothing and she made it work. It's worth it. It is so amazing'. She continued: 'We have to depend on the younger generation to change this world. I trust my children more than us to do the right thing.' Elsewhere in the interview, she revealed that she won't let her daughter go into the world of work at 15 like she did, after starting her own career in her teenage years when she did her first cover shoot. The beauty, who was whisked abroad to model in her first photoshoot for Elle in New Orleans aged 15, said she would be uncomfortable with her now three-year-old to start working so young. The mother-of-two said: 'I'm not sure I would let her start working at 15. It's a ruthless world.'

Sam Thompson battles on in torrential rain as injured and emotional star is joined by Chris Hughes on day two of gruelling 260-mile endurance challenge
Sam Thompson looked visibly emotional as he was met with horrendous weather conditions on day two of his gruelling Soccer Aid Challenge. The beloved TV and radio star, 34, was joined by former Love Island star and good pal Chris Hughes, 32, for support on Tuesday. Sam has been given the task to travel a mammoth 260-mile journey on both bike and foot to deliver the match ball to its new home in Old Trafford, with the hope of raising much-needed funds for Unicef. To complete the challenge, the I'm A Celeb star is expected to run a marathon for five days and cycle in between, ensuring the ball arrives on June 6, just in time for kickoff on Sunday, June 15. And in new images, Sam, who is suffering from a calf injury, looked downcast as he was soaked head-to-toe by the heavy rain. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. The star decided to cycle the remaining miles of his Tuesday challenge after revealing he 'popped his calf' and was strapped into a medical table just the day before. Sam was seen red-faced from the wet weather and appeared to sigh as he wiped away the water from his face. In an attempt to boost morale, Chris joined his pal on the bike as Sam continued on with his challenge. Later on, the pair beamed for a snap together inside a building as Sam rested on a massage bed with some lunch. Following their meeting, Chris went to his Instagram stories to share clips of their cycle together. Gushing over his pal, he penned: 'Keep donating towards Sam's challenge, it's seriously inspiring and he needs every boost he can get. I saw the emotion drain from him earlier, he battles on and is doing so well.' Earlier in the day, Chris smirked when he was grilled about his relationship with JoJo Siwa, 22, live on This Morning. The former Love Island star appeared on the daily ITV show from Towcester where he was covering Sam's Soccer Aid challenge. During the segment, host Ben Shephard asked Chris a cheeky question about him and JoJo. 'Can we just say, because obviously we're all talking about it. Congratulations on the relationship, we're all very excited, have we decided whether it's Hughes-wa... what's the power couple name?' Ben asked. Co-host Cat eagerly added: 'What is it going to be?' 'They call it Co-Jo, that's the one they're all going for,' Chris replied. The two presenters gushed that they liked the name and Chris commented it 'rolls off the tongue'. JoJo and Chris have sparked frenzied speculation about their relationship status over the past few weeks since they met in the Celebrity Big Brother house back in April. Their relationship has grown from platonic to romantic and the Dance Moms star confirmed that she and Chris have made their relationship official, and she's started calling him her boyfriend in an interview with Capital Radio. On Sunday, Chris sent fans into a frenzy when he shared a steam bedroom snap with JoJo on Snapchat. Sharing the sweet image of himself and JoJo cuddled in bed together, he captioned the image: 'Sleeping beauty.' While in an interview with The Guardian, JoJo gushed about her blossoming romance with Chris, when asked whether things between them were still platonic. She said: 'It's not platonic anymore, and it's been a beautiful development, a beautiful connection, and I'm absolutely head over heels for him and he's the same way.' The Dance Moms star also hit back at speculation that their relationship is a 'PR stunt,' saying: 'Clearly, you've never been around us. I won't ever speak for him, but for me personally, the happiness in my life just radiates off of me right now. 'Literally yesterday, I was massaging my cheeks; I've never [before] been in pain from smiling so much.' JoJo also appeared on Sunday's edition on Sunday Brunch, and fought back tears as she emotionally shared how Chris has been embraced by her family since he first flew to the US to surprise her for her 22nd birthday last month. She said: 'She loves him, she does love him. My parents think the absolute world of him, and him and my Dad are like best friends, Chris was actually telling me this yesterday, they went to the spa together yesterday. 'They're literally best friends, Mom Siwa she absolutely adores him. I love watching her watch us, because I've never seen my mom so happy, and it's... it's... I could cry. 'Honestly, it makes me happy to have everybody act as... it feels like we're a family, it feels like he's been in my family for how ever many years it feels like forever.
