15 years on, CWG streetscape set for modern makeover

Time of India05-05-2025

New Delhi: During the 2010 Commonwealth Games (CWG), Delhi govt beautified roads leading to sports venues with streetscaping, resurfacing, and new streetlights. However, over the last 15 years, the sleek information panels, benches, toilets, and kiosks have not only suffered damage over time, but vandalism too. Now, Delhi govt is working to restore their appearance and add new facilities.
Officials said the public works department (PWD) has entrusted the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) to engage a concessionaire to maintain, operate, and upgrade the already installed street furniture and bring new items wherever required on its roads in the vicinity of the CWG venues on a build, operate, and transfer basis.
A senior Delhi govt official said the areas have been divided into five different clusters. While cluster one includes the Delhi University area, Ring Road, and Mall Road to Chhatrasal Stadium in north Delhi, Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, the stretch of Ring Road (Rajghat to Moolchand Flyover), Bhairon Marg, and Indraprastha Marg have been kept in cluster two. R.K. Khanna Tennis Complex and Africa Avenue Marg are part of cluster three; Siri Fort Sports Complex and Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range are in cluster four; and Commonwealth Games Village, Yamuna Sports Complex, Noida Link Road, Akshardham, Mayur Vihar, and Vikas Marg have been included in cluster five.
"We have asked the DTTDC to install all new temporary and semi-permanent street furniture items – traffic and police booths, vending kiosks, public toilets, tree guards, dustbins, information panels, benches, and free-standing panels – in cluster four (area around Siri Fort Complex and Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range). All other clusters will have both new as well as repaired and revamped items," said an official.
Officials said they have shared the GPS (global positioning system) locations of existing sites with the DTTDC. In some cases, the location of the furniture items might have changed due to road reengineering by various agencies, but most of them continue to remain where they were originally installed during the Games in 2010 and were widely used by the people.
"In cluster four and in other areas too where the new items have to be installed, the concessionaire will have to get the design and pattern approved by DTTDC before commencing the work. While the new installations will have to be completed in a year's time, the repair and revamp work will have to be finished within six months of awarding the contract," said an official.
Each unit of dustbin will consist of biodegradable and non-biodegradable bins. Officials said the police booth, auto prepaid booth, and free-standing panels will have the same specifications, design, and colour as the existing street furniture items.

After major facelift, Valluvar Kottam, a landmark of Chennai, is ready for inauguration

Valluvar Kottam, one of the city's landmarks, is ready for inauguration after renovations. The venue is likely to host its first function since the facelift on June 21, and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is expected to participate in it. The Public Works Department (PWD) has completed the ₹80-crore project to renovate the city's iconic monument, which is spread over 5 acres. People who pass by the edifice may get a glimpse of the stone chariot lit up during the evening hours. Besides structural retrofitting of the monument that was constructed between 1974 and 1976, the PWD has built various facilities to attract visitors to the facility dedicated to Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar. The monument has undergone elaborate Stapathi works to beautify its entrances, and visitors will be treated to a 10-minute 'light and sound show' at the stone chariot and a musical fountain at the entrance. The modernised edifice will also have intricate artworks on its columns and facade. Officials said the recreational facilities were being tested before the inauguration. Some of the new facilities include a cafeteria and a multi-level parking area, which can accommodate 164 vehicles. The ground floor will have an air-conditioned auditorium with a seating capacity of about 1,500 people and another modernised library and research hall, which can accommodate 100 people. The Kural Manimadam on the first floor, which will have the 1,330 Thirukkural verses on display along with commentary by former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and relevant paintings, has also been spruced up. The terrace leading to the 106-ft chariot has been redesigned with ornamental pillars and a covered pathway. Elevators and ramps have also been installed for better accessibility, officials added.

Locals protest ‘unscientific' tree translocation

1 2 3 4 5 6 Guwahati: In a bid to draw attention to the ongoing tree translocation process in Ambari, linked to the upcoming flyover from Noonmati to Dighalipukhuri, hundreds of citizens formed a human chain on Saturday, denouncing the process as unscientific and a breach of public trust. At the protest site, residents from diverse backgrounds held placards advocating for tree preservation and warning of environmental consequences. To make their demonstration culturally resonant, some participants sang songs by the legendary Bhupen Hazarika. Santanu Borthakur, a Gauhati high court advocate and local resident, recalled the PIL filed in Nov last year. He said the govt had assured the court under oath that the trees would not be harmed but believes that it has now reneged on its promise. "It is truly shocking that the govt has gone back on its word. I have repeatedly stressed that local residents must be consulted before undertaking such projects, as their input is just as important as that of experts," Borthakur said. Another resident, Khanindra Talukdar, voiced concerns over the ecological impact. "What we are doing today is for the benefit of future generations. If these trees are removed, what kind of environment will they inherit? We are not against development, but it should not come at the cost of sacrificing these trees," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The century-old trees that once lined Gopinath Bordoloi Road were mostly relocated during night hours to the backyard of the Ambari Textile Institute to facilitate construction. Now, only a few stripped mature trunks remain, their branches and leaves chopped in preparation for translocation. Officials from the PWD explained that in a week's time, four to five trees can be translocated, while smaller trees can be relocated quickly, mature ones take longer. "The process begins with trimming and preparing the root ball before shifting the trees. We are working with a consultant from Delhi, who has been overseeing their care. Some translocated trees have already started sprouting new leaves," said Lakhyajyoti Borah, a PWD engineer. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
