Always mobile

The Hindu6 days ago

I am a senior citizen, aged 65 and retired. I am in a WhatsApp group, essentially meant to stay connected with old friends. All my friends are of my age, and many older to me. I am really surprised at the extensive usage of mobile phones by my friends, forwarding messages even at late hours in the night. These were the same friends from the 'pre-mobile times', then a lot younger and leading highly disciplined lives. The famous line 'Early to bed, Early to rise' was adhered to in the prime years. Now with most of us retired, lifestyles are in total disarray. There is little or no sleep. Messages, mostly meaningless, are sent out as texts.
If senior citizens use mobile phones all day and a major part of the night, what is the message that we are sending to the younger generation?! Mobile phone addiction has surpassed all other addictions possible.
Essentially what was designed to be an effective tool for better communication, the mobile phones have changed our lifestyles totally. Hands that were put to useful skills once are now mostly engaged in browsing the phone.
We live in times where the entire existence depends on scientific and technological advancements. Change is inescapable but not all changes are for the better. An overwhelming dependency on technology is taking over our lives.
Time is invaluable, it needs to be spent prudently. Lost time is gone forever. In today's world, lots of precious time is spent on a mobile phone, as it becomes a partner that is in our hands from the time we wake up in the morning to the time we retire to bed.
Many of us sleep late and wake up late, leaving us tired and exhausted. Often, work load is cited as an excuse or reason, with the real reason being excessive use of mobile phones. Families living together, in reality live like strangers, each preoccupied with browsing mobiles. Even in a crowd, one is in isolation.
We live in constant fear due to the ever increasing cyber crimes, which never was known in the days of yore. Growing misinformation is also a big pain.
The 'pre-mobile' era was the best in terms of lifestyle. People used to communicate a lot better, were patient listeners, families used to spend quality time with healthy discussions and purposeful, meaningful talks.
The art of listening, before talking, made any discussion healthy. Children used to enjoy their holidays playing lots of indoor games, among other activities. Travelling with families was fun. The land-line phones were sufficient for communication.
Senior citizens used to keep themselves busy, pursuing hobbies and interests. Visits to temples and prayers were so much better, compared to today when devotees have to be told to switch off their mobiles. Sad, but true.

'How do I know my mum isn't dead in a ditch after Israel arrested her?'

Seren Murphy, 43, was relaxing at home on a Saturday night when she got a message on the WhatsApp family group chat from her mum. She'd been arrested by Israel. Seren's mum, Máire Ní Mhurchú, 70, flew to the occupied West Bank in early May to do what she has done for 20 years – help Palestinians. But no one heard from the mum-of-three, grandmother-of-eight and great-grandmother-of-two for days after she was detained and threatened with deportation on Saturday, an order she is fighting in the courts. Seren, a librarian in Swansea, told Metro: 'How do I know she's not dead in a ditch somewhere? 'When you look at what's happening in Gaza, the fact that they have murdered aid workers and medical staff, what's to stop them from bumping off a little old lady?' As much as Seren's phone has been 'red-hot' recently from her frantically checking it, she knows her mum will be fine. She said: 'My mum is my hero. She's got the biggest heart of anybody I've ever met – Palestine is part of her life and soul.' Almost every autumn, Mhurchú, who goes by D Murphy, goes to the West Bank to help pick olives off the terraced hillsides. But the olives were unharvested when she landed last month. Seren said: 'The joy is disappearing. They're living in fear… Some of the villages she's been to have been bulldozed to the ground. Some people she knows are dead.' One village is Khalet Al-Daba'a in Masafer Yatt, home to 14 families before Israeli forces demolished 90% of the homes and infrastructure. Murphy, from Douglas in Cork, was joined by her friend Susanne Björk on May 28 to volunteer for the International Solidarity Movement (ISM). Björk, 48, told Metro Israeli settlers she filmed 'terrorising' Palestinian villagers stole her phone on May 30. She reported them to the police. But at 6.30am the next day, masked soldiers kicked down their door and gave them 10 seconds to get out. Israeli settlers serving as reservists reportedly told them to leave as they were in a 'military area' before police arrested them. Björk said: 'But the police and soldiers the day before had not mentioned this. How are we to know we were not supposed to be there?' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Inside the station, they saw two Palestinian boys, aged about 13. Björk recalled: 'An officer told me: 'These are terrorists. If we don't zip-tie them, they'll run.' We were in the middle of an illegal settlement. There was nowhere for them to go.' Israel has classified the area as a military zone since the 1980s, complicating residents' ability to remain. Khalet Al-Daba'a is inactive, according to a 2022 map. At a Sunday hearing in Tel Aviv, the court accused them of being in a military zone and threatening soldiers and police. Björk said: 'Which is a ridiculous thing to say because these are heavily armed people and I'm a 48-year-old woman with a 70-year-old.' After agreeing to board the next available flight, Björk was deported. Murphy is in Givon Prison and was denied counsel on Wednesday, ISM said. Björk said: 'I fear for D. She's a 70-year-old woman in detention – we had to fight to use the toilet.' On Wednesday, Seren's aunt received a call – it was Murphy, saying she had not spoken with her lawyer since Monday. Seren said: 'I'm reassured knowing she's still alive. It's surreal to think that way about your mum. 'But alongside those feelings is also anger at the fact we're in this situation and what is happening every day in Palestine.' Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking 250 people hostage. Israel has killed nearly 54,700 Palestinians, mainly women and children. ISM told Metro: 'Israel labels indigenous Palestinians, their supporters and those who tell the truth about the genocide unfolding in occupied Palestine as criminals, uses force to silence and remove them from occupied Palestine.' More Trending Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade told Metro officials are providing consular assistance. It said: 'As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the details of individual cases.' The IDF, the Israel Police and Sweden's Ministry for Foreign Affairs have been approached for comment. James Argent's ex breaks silence as she claims she was 'brutally evicted'

James Argent's ex-girlfriend Nicoline Artursson has broken her silence after the former TOWIE star was convicted of domestic violence earlier this month James Argent's former girlfriend, Nicoline Artursson, has finally spoken out after the ex-TOWIE star admitted to domestic violence. Earlier this month, Argent admitted his guilt in a Spanish court, receiving a six-month suspended prison sentence and a two-year restraining order. Argent had pushed his then-girlfriend down a flight of stairs, causing injuries, according to earlier reports. Despite the shocking incident, Argent was back on stage by the end of the week, earning his living through singing. ‌ Nicoline, a model and former Miss Sweden, met Arg outside a supermarket in Marbella and they quickly fell head over heels for each other. ‌ In an interview with OK! magazine, James reminisced about the moment he first saw Nicoline, describing her as beautiful even in her gym clothes and without makeup. "She'd just fed a stray cat. We both smiled and kind of giggled at each other. And Nicoline carried on walking. Then I thought, 'What have I got to lose?' So I turned around and said, 'Hey.'" The couple went on to date and had discussed starting a family together one day, with Nicoline praising Arg's family-oriented nature, reports the Mirror. Until now, Nicoline had remained silent about the incident. She recently took to social media to share her thoughts on what had transpired in a lengthy and emotional post titled 'All that glitters, where is the gold?'. In a heartfelt social media post, Nicoline detailed her emotional and physical turmoil following the end of her relationship. She wrote: "It's now been a month. I still can't believe it. My fractures on my body have finally healed but I'm wounded inside. I've been quiet long enough. Silence protects no one - and it almost destroyed started as a love story sadly turned into something else. Behind the pictures, promises and the plans for a life together - the beautiful days - changed into something into sadness with emotional manipulation and eventually physical harm." ‌ While she didn't name anyone specifically, Nicoline hinted at issues with Arg's past, saying he had "unresolved ties to his past". She expressed her frustration about feeling like a third wheel in her own relationship, stating: "There were 'too many people in our relationship' - her, Arg and his ex - and accused the unnamed ex and her family of 'targeted emotional distress'." She continued: "I loved deeply, believed in our future and stood by someone I thought would protect me and instead I was left alone and harmed in ways I never imagined. I was not only failed by him but deeply affected by the presence of unresolved ties to his past." ‌ Nicoline also referenced a social media poll she conducted, sharing: "Yes I posted an Instagram story with a simple yes or no question about if your ex should be a part of your present relationship. I felt there were too many people in our relationship: me, my boyfriend and his ex. 'Three's a crowd', they say. I asked so many times if we could be just the two of us, but the answer was a strong NO. "I experienced what I can only describe as targeted emotional distress which he allowed to continue. The ex and her family put us through so much misery and false accusations, I won't go into details. "They had no reason whatsoever to do what they did to us, but for some reason they wouldn't let go and let us enjoy our love. Everybody knows that real friends support you and want to see you happy. So I posted a story on Instagram." ‌ She further stated Arg had promised to "put a stop" to the ongoing issues: "After being together for one year my boyfriend finally promised me that he would have boundaries. He would put a stop to all that had been going on for months. But he didn't. "Instead he broke the promise and her controlling behaviour continued. The rest is history. I was brutally thrown out of our new home in the middle of the night wearing only my pyjamas. I opened the door to let him in and only minutes after I found myself laying down on the stairs outside our house. My clothes and belongings were being thrown out from the balcony down on me. I was injured." Later, Nicoline expressed gratitude to her neighbours: "Thanks to incredible neighbours who heard and saw what happened and acted, I got help. They called police, brought me to safety and ensured the incident was taken seriously." ‌ She powerfully ended her message with: "A gentleman does not abuse you and end up in jail and call you the love of his life. A gentleman does not blame you for his actions. A gentleman will confide in his partner, family and close circle of friends, keeping them close and safe. A gentleman chooses you always and leaves the past in the past - including exes. "Life is to be lived together and not to please people who want to take advantage of you. At the end of the day, fame can only do so much - it's all about being strong and growing together. Life is simply not a reality TV show, life is real. I have tried to understand why. I have cried so many tears thinking about the way he chose to hurt me. He said he loved me and I believed him and here we are." ‌ Furthering her reflection, she continued: "There is now a legal record of what happened. Violence has no excuse - no matter how much love preceded it. To those who questioned me for staying as long as I did: I stayed because I believed in love. I believed he and we could grow, could heal, could choose peace. But love doesn't survive in chaos. And it cannot survive where violence lives." She then addressed her readers directly: "To every woman reading this: if you've ever questioned your worth, your safety or your sanity in a relationship - this is your sign. You deserved to be loved with care and integrity. And you are not alone. To the men: real strength is protection. Real love is safe. Be the kind of man who lifts women up - not one who breaks them down, neither by violence or silence. ‌ "To the future: never say never. I will get the little family I've always dreamed of and have my dream wedding to symbolise and celebrate true love in front of my dear family and friends." She penned: "I'm healing now. Slowly, bravely and unapologetically. I will rise and I will use my voice - not for vengeance but for truth. For every woman who's been silenced by someone who said 'I love you' and then proved otherwise. This is not just my story. It's a reminder: abuse - whether emotional, psychological or physical - has no place in love."

Ange to be sacked by Tottenham as Europa League triumph not enough to avoid Daniel Levy axe

Time us up for the Australian at Tottenham despite him delivering their first major trophy in 17 years Tottenham are to sensationally sack manager Ange Postecoglou just weeks after he led them to Europa League glory. The Australian made good on his vow that he always wins a trophy in his second season when Spurs downed Manchester United in Bilbao to lift a first major trophy in 17 years. ‌ But it came at the end of a desperate domestic season that saw them finish just one place above the relegation zone and European glory hasn't been enough to save his skin. ‌ The Australian left Celtic in 2023 after a trophy-laden spell in the Scottish Premiership back but, outside of their famous night in Bilbao, has struggled to bring the same success to Spurs. Ruthless owner Daniel Levy will pull the trigger with Tottenham on the lookout for their next boss while Postecoglou is out of work after two seasons in London. Confirmation is expected soon. The Celtic hero will reportedly get a pay-off of around £4million from Spurs, with two years still remaining on his contract. Tottenham are said to be very keen in bringing in Brentford head coach Thomas Frank as his replacement but - according to reports - will have to fork out £10million to get him out of his existing deal with the Bees.
