New museum 'last chance' to save Blackpool's trams
Campaigners have urged people to get behind a new visitor attraction as part of a "last chance" bid to help save a town's fleet of heritage trams.A workshop in Blackpool has been repurposed by volunteers to house the historical vehicles and is set to open later this month as the Tramtown exhibition centre.It is part of a heritage project aimed at securing the future of the tram service which was suspended by council-owned Blackpool Transport in December due to safety fears.Tramtown volunteer and Blackpool councillor Paul Galley said the vehicles were "fundamental to the DNA of Blackpool".
Mr Galley said it was hoped opening the exhibition centre would help support a bid for grant funding of up to £5m from the National Lottery.
Workshops at Blackpool Transport's Rigby Road have been re-purposed to become the Tramtown centre as other parts of the depot needed roof repairs, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.Volunteers have spent the last few weeks smartening up the centre with paint, new lights and a shop in time to welcome the public back from Good Friday.
Mr Galley said: "This is the last chance to save these heritage trams and if it doesn't work we will lose them as there will be nowhere to store them. "It's about protecting them and in time being able to recruit new engineers to maintain them."Jane Cole, managing director of Blackpool Transport, previously said the aim was to restore the heritage trams later this year.But she said there were "a number of complex operational issues that need to be addressed" before they could take to tracks once again.

Lottery winner celebrates £5.2m win with surprising first purchase
A lorry driver has celebrated winning millions on the lottery by quitting his job and buying a new vacuum cleaner. Gary MacDonald, 60, said a Shark vacuum was the first thing he bought after winning £5.2m. Mr MacDonald, from Barking, east London, admitted that, despite his newfound wealth, he had "shopped around for the best deal". "We are not flash people; we are very down to earth and know the value of things," he said. He found out about his success last Thursday in a National Lottery email, and, at first, he thought he'd won £35 in the 6 April draw. It was "the longest two and a half hours of my life waiting until the phone lines open at 8.00am" to confirm the win, he said. Anita, his partner of 25 years, "thought it was five thousand and something", he said. "I was saying: 'No love, it's more than that'." Mr MacDonald, who has played Lotto each week since the game started, had got up at 5.30am that day. But, instead of delivering parcels to Lakeside Shopping Centre in nearby Thurrock, which he has done for more than 30 years, "at 6.30am, I called my boss and resigned", he said. He said he had realised "there was absolutely no point in doing another day's work, not today, not any day". His daughter thought he was joking when he told her, he said. "It's been a crazy few days, I can't believe everyone's reaction," he said. "I don't think I have ever been sworn at so much". He and Anita are going to marry this summer - and the keen Formula One fan also plans to go and watch a race in person.

It beat the previous fastest FWD Ford driven in 8.76 seconds at 152mph by a Focus over 20 years ago - and became the fastest FWD Zetec and Zetec stock block. After obliterating the record on Good Friday, Terry said: 'I never dreamed of getting it to go that fast. I didn't think it was possible. 'I hadn't driven since October and we were only going out to check if the van still worked. 'You set off and you just change gears before pulling a parachute but I knew it must have been a decent time as I could feel it dragging the van into the other lane. 'When I found out we'd beaten the record, I instantly cried remembering my seven-year-old daughter Elektra said to go win it when I saw her on Wednesday. 'We matched the record last year but to beat it is unbelievable as it takes so much work just to shave off those milliseconds when you reach these high speeds.' Terry, of Fat Pig Racing, swapped the van with a mate for a Mk4 Escort six years ago - and didn't have high hopes after blowing the head gasket driving it home to Preston, Lancs. The mechanic reckons he's spent more than £100,000 on modifications to make it reach 60mph in just 1.8 seconds, 100mph in 3.9 seconds and 135mph in 5.9 seconds. The two-litre turbo engine, which makes it quicker than a Bugatti Chiron Super Sport, burns seven litres of methanol per quarter mile. It provides around 1,100 brake horsepower and could do 230mph but is too powerful to accurately measure without wheel spinning. Terry, who usually drives a Volkswagen Touareg, credits sponsors and mechanics Chris Eade, dubbed the Turbo Doctor, and Graeme Cook for turning the tradie's van into a world beater. He added: 'There's still work to do. I'm hoping to win an event next month against racers from all across Europe with a £100,000 prize pot. 'I got a phone call from world-famous DJ Carl Cox congratulating me as he's a lovely guy who also races in our class with his own team.
