Daniel Levy breaks silence on Ange Postecoglou sacking: ‘We want to win the Premier League'

Telegraph5 hours ago

Daniel Levy has broken his silence on sacking Ange Postecoglou and said that winning the Europa League was not good enough.
The Tottenham Hotspur chairman declared that 'failure is not an option' as he set Postecoglou's successor as head coach, Thomas Frank, the target of winning the Premier League. Tottenham last won the league in 1961.
'You saw the outpouring of emotion with the parade. It was just incredible. We've won a European trophy,' Levy said after Tottenham's triumph over Manchester United in Bilbao.
However he then added: 'But it's not enough. It's what we haven't done that is more important. We need to win the league. We want to win the Premier League. We want to win the Champions League. We want to win.'
As expected Postecoglou was sacked – described as a 'unanimous decision' by the Spurs board – just 16 days after winning Spurs first trophy for 17 years and their first European trophy in 41 years which also qualified them for the Champions League.
However Spurs finished 17 th in the Premier League, their lowest ever placing, having lost 22 of their 38 games, and this prompted the club to dismiss Postecoglou and bring in Frank from Brentford.
There were no comments from Levy in the announcement to sack Postecoglou because – apparently – it was regarded as that collective board decision. He therefore talked for the first time about why it happened to Spurs' in-house media team where he sat alongside the newly appointed chief executive Vinai Venkatesham.
'You know I have got very broad shoulders. Failure is not an option,' Levy claimed. 'The desire to succeed - because it is so difficult I want to succeed even more.
'I'm very grateful to Ange. I don't regret appointing Ange. In his first season we finished fifth and in our second season we were over the moon to win the trophy.
'But we need to compete in all competitions and we felt that we needed a change. I've got an excellent relationship with him. I've told him he's always going to be part of our history.
'Himself and his family are always welcome back. It was a collective decision. It wasn't my decision. We do everything together. Emotionally it was difficult but we believe we've made the right decision for the club.
'Whenever you have a new coach it's always a fresh start. You always have different ideas. But we want to build on the success of winning a trophy last season.
'One of the things that stood out to me with Thomas is that he's clearly highly intelligent. Great communicator. Super human being. Plus all the other technical aspects that are obviously important.'
Venkatesham explained that Spurs 'defined 10 characteristics that we think are important to be a successful manager at Tottenham Hotspur' as they identified Frank as their first-choice.
'We analysed in real detail, through our technical staff led by Johan [Lange, technical director], more than 30 candidates. We had a shortlist. We spent a lot of time at the shortlist,' he said. 'And Thomas was absolutely the number one candidate.'

Everton put four Premier League stars on transfer wishlist including Kyle Walker

Everton are in need of more depth at right-back after the exit of Ashley Young, while competition is also needed for club captain Seamus Coleman, and Kyle Walker has been identified as a target Kyle Walker is leading Everton 's four-man transfer wishlist of right-backs this summer as David Moyes looks to provide competition for Seamus Coleman. Everton battled relegation last season under Sean Dyche before Moyes arrived and saved them from the drop, securing a 13th placed finish with 48 points. ‌ Moyes has inspired superb displays from the likes of Iliman Ndiaye and Beto and now he wants to bolster his squad with more quality to ensure the Toffees push on next season - with right-back seen as an area of weakness. ‌ Everton have veteran Seamus Coleman at right-back, but the club captain is 36 and the club know they need more options in that position, especially after Ashley Young departed. According to the Times, Everton have identified four right-backs who could add depth to the sign this summer, with Manchester City star Walker heading up that list. The England right-back spent last season on loan at AC Milan after telling manager Pep Guardiola he wanted a new challenge. He is not expected to stay at the Etihad this summer and Everton are among a "growing list" interested in signing him. While they have offered a one-year extension to Coleman, they still need cover at right-back and are optimistic City will be eager to offload Walker. Everton have been given hope that they could be one of the frontrunners to sign 35-year-old Walker after Milan declined the chance to sign him permanently. Fenerbahce and Galatasaray in Turkey are included in the teams keen on a move. ‌ Another option for Everton is Fulham star Kenny Tete, who will be available on a free transfer when his contract at Craven Cottage expires later this month. With Everton having limited money to spend as they prepare for a first season in their new stadium, Moyes will have to look for bargains. Former West Ham star Vladimir Coufal and former Southampton man Kyle Walker-Peters are two more targets under consideration, the report says. As Walker looks for clarity on his future, another report from the Guardian claims that he would be "enthusiastic" about joining Everton and is not looking at another move abroad after his spell at Milan. Walker has played a total of 646 career games and has won an impressive array of trophies. He boasts six Premier League titles, while he has won the Champions League, the League Cup four times, the FA Cup twice and also the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup.

Jack Grealish can have City future after Club World Cup omission

That came after Grealish, a £100million signing from Aston Villa four years ago and one of the stars of the 2023 treble success, endured a difficult 2024-25 season, making just seven Premier League starts. Guardiola (left) gave Grealish (right) just seven Premier League starts last season (Mike Egerton/PA) Yet Guardiola, while offering no guarantees about the England international's prospects at City, says his absence is principally about allowing him to work on his game. Speaking at a press conference in Philadelphia ahead of City's tournament opener against Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca, Guardiola said: 'He had a conversation with the club and decided the best. 'Jack is an exceptional player but he didn't (play a lot). We decided he has to play. 'We're honest and he's honest. We decided the best was to stay (behind) and find that he can play, that he can come back to the player of the year of the treble and all his career at Aston Villa. 'But the fact is he didn't play much minutes the last two seasons. He has to come back to play and have the butterflies in his stomach that he can play every three days and show again the quality that he has. 'We decided don't come here. What happens I don't know but if he doesn't (leave) he is a player for Man City and he will be back.' Guardiola denied this meant he felt Grealish had lost hunger for the game, but he needs reasons to start picking him again. He said: 'The reason he didn't play is my decisions. Football is competing with each other – not just Jack, all of them. 'They compete (for) who deserves to play. The butterflies are an example of the tension and they happen for all the players. 'Over the last two years he didn't play much and I take responsibility for that, but he has to play and we reflected that it was better not to come here.' Another player not involved in the US is England right-back Kyle Walker, who spent the second half of last season on loan at AC Milan and appears set to leave the club. The 35-year-old has been linked with Everton but Guardiola was unwilling to discuss the matter. He said: 'I don't have any news. It's the same case for Jack. About the links with other teams, you have to ask (director of football) Hugo (Viana).'

Jack Grealish's ommission from Club World Cup was ‘best' for him and Manchester City, Pep Guardiola says

Pep Guardiola stated Jack Grealish was excluded from Manchester City's Club World Cup squad following honest discussions but claimed he could stay at City and return as the player who helped claim the treble. In 35 appearances for City last term Grealish made only 16 starts, with six of these in the league, the 29-year-old's drop in status underlined by him being an unused replacement in the 1-0 FA Cup final defeat to Crystal Palace. Guardiola was asked why he left Grealish off City's bid to claim the inaugural 32-team cup, which begins against Wydad AC at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field on Wednesday at midday local time. 'He had a conversation with the club and [we] decided [what was for] the best,' said Guardiola. 'Jack is an exceptional player. The only reason why he didn't play last season is of course my decision. We decide that he has to play. The club was honest, he was honest. Incredible love and respect [for him] and we decide the best is to stay [behind] and have a place [at home] that he can feel like he can come back to be the player like he was in the year of the treble or all his career in Aston Villa. 'Without him it would have been more difficult in the year of the treble [2022-2023]. The fact is in the last two seasons he didn't play much minutes. He has to come back to play and have the butterflies in his stomach that he can play every three days and show again the quality he has.' Guardiola was asked if this meant away from City. 'I don't know,' the Catalan said. 'Now we decide don't come here and what happens I don't know in the end. If we don't find [another solution], he's a player for Man City and he will be back.' Last season City's captain, Kyle Walker, left on loan in January. Guardiola hinted this was one reason why he has decided a captaincy pool of Rodri, Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias for the tournament rather than letting the players vote on it as usual. 'For the first time in my career I decided it would be my captain – I didn't like what happened last season,' Guardiola said. 'Sometimes I want to be the boss, and this season I decided to do it, so I chose the four captains and at the end of the season, this [Club] World Cup, maybe we will choose one or two more.' He said Erling Haaland will one day be the captain: 'He's so young. But he has to learn what it means to be a captain because he will hopefully be here for many years and sooner or later he will take that position. He's incredibly well respected. I have the feeling thinking for the future that he needs to learn what is best for the team. To put the team, your mates, in front of you. You have to ask what is best for the team. When you do that you never make a mistake.'
