Hong Kong Pokemon card revival sees adults collecting for nostalgia, competition and cash
At the end of a corridor in a nondescript industrial building in Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong, stands a unit with a big illuminated sign beside the door.
Inside, hundreds of trading cards, mostly from the Pokemon and Magic: The Gathering game series, are displayed neatly on shelves on one side of the room. The cards are sealed in transparent cases, with price tags ranging from around HK$90 (US$11.50) to more than HK$6,000.
Near the display, two Pokemon card game enthusiasts battle it out.
Sunny Ma, chief executive of Premier Hobby Collective, says his business is about building a community among trading card lovers and creating a space where they can gather and share the joy of their hobby.

He regularly invites customers to open their newly bought trading cards at the shop, and organises game competitions. 'I do not [want] people to come to buy cards and then just walk away,' he says.
Ma, a Pokemon card collector himself, co-founded Premier Hobby Collective in December 2024. It is part of a recent boom in trading-card-related businesses in Hong Kong fuelled by an increase in the number of collectors in the city.

American economist Stephen Roach has said that Hong Kong has benefited from the US-China trade war despite last year having declared the city to be 'over', even as he claimed that other aspects of the financial hub had worsened. The former Morgan Stanley Asia chairman sparked debate last year after he penned an opinion piece which argued, in part, that Hong Kong would be caught in the 'crossfire' of the worsening US-China rivalry. 'The word caught is the word that, if I had to write the piece again, I would probably change, because I think, ironically, Hong Kong has benefited from the crossfire between the US and China,' he told the Post in a recent interview. Despite worsening ties between the two superpowers since US President Donald Trump began levying his so-called reciprocal tariffs on China and the rest of the world, Hong Kong's stock market has seen solid gains. The benchmark Hang Seng Index is up by around 50 per cent since Roach made his original claim, while Hong Kong has rocketed to the top of global fundraising table following a string of high-profile initial public offerings last month, including from mainland Chinese battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology. Roach, who is now a faculty member at Yale University, said the 'sell America' trade had become a 'global mantra' and Hong Kong was a beneficiary.

Caspar Fownes is ‘King of the Valley' once more, while Ellis Wong continues strong form
Caspar Fownes rocketed to the top of the unofficial Happy Valley trainers' championship and Ellis Wong Chi-wang continued his strong form as the pair bagged doubles at the city circuit on Wednesday night. Wins from Joy Of Spring in the Class Three Tai Tam Gap Handicap (1,800m) and Kaholo Angel in the card-closing Class Two Wan Chai Gap Handicap (1,200m) took Fownes to 23 victories at the track this season, with the 'King of the Valley' leapfrogging Mark Newnham to assume the lead. 'We're back in front. We'll keep doing our best,' said Fownes before praising his apprentice Wong. 'Lovely ride – he's ridden beautifully all night, the kid. He's come a long way, he's doing well and I'm sure everyone's going to want a piece of him now. China and EU schedule crunch talks to resolve economic deadlock
China and the European Union have agreed to hold a new round of trade talks to pave the way for a high-level leaders' summit next month, but analysts said it remained to be seen whether the two sides could resolve the impasse in their bilateral economic relations. The talks were announced by the European Commission following a meeting between China's commerce minister, Wang Wentao, and EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic on the sidelines of a World Trade Organization event in Paris on Tuesday. They are expected to lay the groundwork for a high-level summit slated for late July in Beijing, where European leaders will meet with President Xi Jinping. 'The two sides held focused, candid and in-depth discussions on pressing and important issues related to China-EU economic and trade cooperation,' China's Ministry of Commerce said in a statement on Wednesday. 'They also tasked their respective working teams to intensify efforts in preparing for this year's key bilateral agenda on the economic and trade front,' it added. Meanwhile, an EU spokesperson said on Tuesday that the bloc's 'overall objective remains to rebalance our trade and investment relationship with China and level the playing field'.
