(Reuters) -Richard Carapaz won stage 11 of the Giro d'Italia on Wednesday with a solo ride in the last nine kilometres and leader Isaac Del Toro came second in a sprint to the line, finishing 10 seconds behind the former Olympic champion.
The stage was a challenging 186km ride from Viareggio to Castelnovo ne' Monti which had the most punishing sector on the Giro this year -- the Alpe San Pellegrino climb with gradients of around 20%.
Although a breakaway group led by nearly a minute with 15km to go, EF Education-EasyPost's Carapaz left the peloton behind and attacked to reel them in, overtaking them with nine km left.
The Ecuadorean powered to the finish with a lead of 18 seconds in the final kilometre while Del Toro led the chasers, beating Giulio Ciccone who completed the podium.
Del Toro retained the pink jersey while his UAE Team Emirates team mate Juan Ayuso is in second place in the general classification.

Tennis-Boisson goes from crowdfunding to bumper pay day in Paris

FILE PHOTO: Tennis - French Open - Roland Garros, Paris, France - June 2, 2025 France's Lois Boisson in action during her fourth round match against Jessica Pegula of the U.S. REUTERS/Gonzalo Fuentes/File Photo PARIS (Reuters) -French Open semi-finalist Lois Boisson will earn at least 690,000 euros ($789,636.00) from her fairytale run at Roland Garros which means the local favourite will no longer have to rely on crowdfunding in a bid to boost her finances. The French wild card came into the tournament having earned about 20,000 euros this year but even if she loses to American Coco Gauff in the semi-finals on Thursday, the world number 361 can expect endorsements and sponsorships to come flooding in. If Boisson beats the second-seeded American and reaches the final she will receive a cheque for 1,275,000 euros, while if the 22-year-old wins the title she will pocket 2,550,000 euros. Boisson started a crowdfunding campaign a year ago, asking for help to "get back to the highest level and make it to the four Grand Slams this year" after suffering a serious knee injury just before Roland Garros, where she got a wild card. Boisson received another invitation from the French tennis federation to play at the tournament again this year and has not disappointed, beating world number three Jessica Pegula and Russian prodigy Mirra Andreeva in the two previous rounds. Boisson only got 100 euros in crowdfunding in a year before that jumped above 1,000 just before the semi-finals but the talented youngster won't need to seek donations now. Soccer-Forward James named in England squad for European Championship

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Women's Nations League - England Training - St. George's Park, Burton upon Trent, Britain - April 3, 2025 England's Lauren James during training Action Images via Reuters/Andrew Boyers/File Photo BURTON UPON TRENT, England (Reuters) - England named Lauren James in their squad on Thursday for this year's Women's European Championship despite the Chelsea striker being sidelined with a hamstring injury for over two months. James, who has seven goals in 27 appearances for England, had been in a race against time to recover before the team kick off the defence of their title versus France on July 5. Sarina Wiegman's squad suffered a blow on Wednesday when defender Millie Bright withdrew from consideration for the tournament, saying she was not physically and mentally at her best. Bright's withdrawal comes after goalkeeper Mary Earps and midfielder Fran Kirby announced their international retirement. Earps appeared to have lost her starting spot to Hampton and Kirby was told she would not be in the squad for the finals in Switzerland. Squad: Goalkeepers: Hannah Hampton, Khiara Keating, Anna Moorhouse Defenders: Lucy Bronze, Lotte Wubben-Moy, Jess Carter, Niamh Charles, Alex Greenwood, Maya Le Tissier, Esme Morgan, Leah Williamson Midfielders: Grace Clinton, Jess Park, Ella Toone, Georgia Stanway, Keira Walsh Forwards: Michelle Agyemang, Aggie Beever-Jones, Lauren Hemp, Lauren James, Chloe Kelly, Beth Mead, Alessia Russo (Reporting by Lori Ewing; Editing by Ken Ferris)
