Mahlangu receives heroic welcome from Vaal community
EVATON.- Thabang Mahlangu received a heroic welcome from the Evaton North (Ward 19) community after returning from Egypt.
This SuperSport United young defender was part of the Amajita team that made history when they were crowned the 2025 African Cup of Nations Champions in Egypt over the weekend. The Amajita team arrived in the country on Tuesday, and the Evaton North community surprised this youngster when they gathered at the Evaton North BP Filling Station to give him a hearty welcome.
There was a traffic jam for a few hours as young and old, especially the football community, took to the streets as they chanted Mahlangu's name. This former SAFA Sedibeng Hollywood Regionals League Vaal Juventus FC defender represented South Africa with distinction.
Amajita was crowned the AFCON champions and qualified for the U20 World Cup, with Chile as the hosting nation.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Dipopo Lenkoe, who initiated this (the welcome), said it was fitting to give Mahlangu a warm welcome back.

Bafana's Broos – 'We will give every player the same playing time' The absence of Mamelodi Sundowns players from this Bafana squad has given plenty of opportunity for a host of other players to show what they can do in the next week or so. 'It is a great opportunity for the new and young players with us,' said Broos. 'There is no pressure, these are friendly games and the results are not that important. We will give every player the same playing time. That is a bit difficult for goalkeepers, but even there we will try. 'We can have a good camp and make a good evaluation after the Fifa week on … our players. 'The performance is the most important. We would like to win the two games and will do everything to win. But more important is the performance of the players. Certainly with the new players, there is no pressure. They must just play and we will see what to do in the future.' Bafana's contingent of 23 players was set to be completed yesterday with midfielder Luke Le Roux and left back Samuel Kabini arriving from Scandinavia. 'But it is not a problem, they will play next Tuesday (against Mozambique). We will give them rest and adaptation time. Travelling from northern Europe to South Africa is a long distance, and they will need a bit of recuperation,' added Broos. Broos, meanwhile, seemed fairly content with the quality of opposition Bafana will face over the next week or so. 'Our opponents are not the strongest but they are certainly not the weakest in Africa,' said Broos. 'Both were in the last AFCON. Mozambique are in a good place to go to the World Cup next year. That means they are good opponents. It is a good opportunity for everyone to prove themselves and show their qualities.' Tanzania poser Tanzania coach Hemed Seleiman, unlike Bafana, has named the same squad for both the friendly against Bafana and the Cosafa Cup. ALSO READ: Agent confirms exit of two Sundowns players The East African country accepted a late invite to the Cosafa Cup to replace Morocco. It remains to be seen if Tanzania fields a stronger team against Bafana or Madagascar in their Cosafa Cup opener. Either way there are likely to be two very different sides with the Madagascar game coming just a day after the Bafana friendly.

'We played a pre-season game in Australia he won Man of the Match. I was like 'We're going to build a team around this guy'. We get back and we train for a week or two.

Broos sticks to his guns as Bafana Bafana look to build on Afcon success

Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Hugo Broos hasn't become the longest-serving Bafana Bafana coach by listening to outside noise — and that's why the buck will always stop with him when it comes to team matters. Broos recently etched his name into the national team's history, becoming their longest-serving coach and surpassing Clive Barker's record after serving for four years. Things weren't all rosy at the beginning. Broos even considered resigning during the first few months in the role, following heavy criticism from most quarters. Much of the backlash came after Bafana were hammered 5–0 by world champions France away from home and lost 2–1 to Africa's top-ranked side, Morocco. However, the tide turned after the talismanic Themba Zwane was brought into the fold and Broos received a vote of confidence from Safa president Danny Jordaan. That support paid off as Bafana secured a podium finish — third place — at the recent Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, their first in over two decades. Since then, the South Africans have continued to build momentum, finishing top of their group after an unbeaten run in qualifiers for the 2025 Afcon finals in Morocco. Bafana are also on the brink of qualifying for the 2026 Fifa World Cup — their first potential qualification since hosting the tournament in 2010. Speaking to the media in Polokwane on Monday ahead of Bafana's friendlies against Tanzania on Friday and Mozambique next Tuesday, Broos reflected on his time at the helm. 'I don't regret anything,' Broos said. 'The way I work will always be the same, so I will always do it my way. 'If I don't succeed, I will always look at myself in the mirror and say: 'It's because of me. I did it like that'. I don't want to be influenced by anybody. After all, when the results are not forthcoming, then you'll be sacked as the coach — so it's better to do it your own way.' Broos will also stay true to his methods during the two upcoming friendlies, maintaining his commitment to introducing new faces into the team. 'I think it's a great opportunity for the young players who are with us,' Broos added. 'There'll be no pressure; we are playing friendly games, and the results will not be important. 'From my side, I will give every player the same game-time. It's a little bit difficult for goalkeepers, but we'll try to ensure each one gets equal minutes, that we have a good camp, and can make a proper evaluation of everyone. 'The performance is important — so we'll try to do everything to win the two games — but more importantly, we want to assess the players, especially the new ones.' Broos' decision to integrate fresh talent is partly due to the absence of Mamelodi Sundowns players, who will be on club duty at the upcoming Fifa Club World Cup. Despite Sundowns narrowly missing out on a second African crown on Sunday night after losing to Pyramids, their players have formed the core of Bafana—a dynamic Broos is keen to change.
