Minnesota state lawmakers shot, search underway for suspect, state governor says

A gunman posing as a police officer killed a senior Democratic Minnesota lawmaker and her husband on Saturday (local time) in an apparent "politically motivated assassination," and wounded a second lawmaker and his spouse, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said.
A major search was underway for the suspect, who fled on foot after firing at police, abandoning a vehicle in which officers found a "manifesto" listing other legislators and officials, law enforcement officials told a news conference.
President Donald Trump said he had been briefed on the "terrible shooting that took place in Minnesota, which appears to be a targeted attack against State Lawmakers."
"Such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America. God Bless the great people of Minnesota, a truly great place!" he said in a statement.
Those killed were Democratic state assemblywoman Melissa Hortman, a former assembly speaker, and her husband, Mark, Walz and law enforcement officials told reporters.
Walz said that the gunman went to the Hortmans' residence after shooting Senator John Hoffman and his wife, of Champlin, multiple times.
They underwent surgery, Walz said, adding that he was "cautiously optimistic" that they would survive "this assassination attempt."
"This was an act of targeted political violence," he said. "Peaceful discourse is the foundation of our democracy. We don't settle our differences with violence or at gunpoint."
Law enforcement authorities said the gunman was dressed as a police officer and escaped after exchanging fire with police who went to the Hortmans' home.

The suspect, whom police identified as Vance Luther Boelter, 57, fled on foot early on Saturday local time when officers confronted him at the Brooklyn Park home of state Representative Melissa Hortman , the top Democrat in the Minnesota House, and her husband, Mark, who were both killed. The gunman earlier had shot and wounded another Democratic lawmaker, state Senator John Hoffman, and his wife Yvette at their home a few miles away, authorities said. Minnesota US Senator Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat, said on NBC's "Meet the Press with Kristen Welker" on Sunday morning that investigators believe Boelter is still in the region. Authorities in Sibley County, about an hour by car southwest of Minneapolis, issued an alert on Sunday saying they had found the suspect's car in Faxon Township and instructing residents to keep their doors and cars locked, the county sheriff's office confirmed. Officers were searching residences in the area. The location of the car is about 6.4 km east of Boelter's listed home address in Green Isle, also in Sibley County, which was searched by law enforcement officers on Saturday. The gunman had left behind a vehicle outside Hortman's house in suburban Minneapolis that resembled a police SUV, including flashing lights, and contained a "manifesto" and a target list of other politicians and institutions, officials said. "There clearly was some through line with abortion, because of the groups that were on the list and other things that I've heard were in this manifesto. So that was one of his motivations," Klobuchar said. ABC News, citing law enforcement officials, reported the list of targets featured dozens of Minnesota Democrats, including Walz, who was also the Democratic vice presidential candidate last year. The killing was the latest in a series of high-profile episodes of US political violence, including the attack on former Democratic US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband at their home in 2022, the attempted assassination of Donald Trump during last year's presidential campaign, and an arson attack at Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's house in April. "My wife is freaked out," Voight said. "She's like, 'We've got guns in the house, right?'" Outside the state capitol in St. Paul, a small memorial had taken shape, with flowers, American flags and handwritten messages on yellow post-it notes. "Justice for Melissa," read one note, with a drawing of a heart on it. Klobuchar said she had seen both Hortman and Hoffman at a political dinner on Friday, just hours before they were shot. "We started out together in politics, moms with young kids, and somehow she was able to balance getting to know every door, knock on every house in her district, while raising two children - Girl Scout leader, she taught Sunday school," the US senator said of Hortman, 55. The FBI released photos of the suspect wearing a rubber mask and a police-like uniform. David Carlson, 59, told Reuters he has shared a house in Minneapolis with Boelter for more than a year and last saw him on Friday night. He said he received a disturbing text from Boelter at about 6 am on Saturday. "He said that he might be dead soon," said Carlson, who called police. Trump has faced criticism from some opponents for using inflammatory rhetoric at times when talking about his political rivals. On Saturday, he said in a statement: "Such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America." In one of his first moves in office earlier this year, Trump pardoned nearly everyone criminally charged with participating in the 6 January, 2021, Capitol attack.

Saipan vessel intercepted in Guam carrying undeclared fireworks
Photo: AFP / NurPhoto A vessel towing cargo from Saipan was intercepted by Guam Customs officers after an inspection uncovered undeclared fireworks. According to the Guam Customs and Quarantine Agency, officers discovered 89 boxes of assorted fireworks concealed inside cargo labeled as "paper towels". The contraband was hidden in a forward compartment of the vessel. The vessel's master told officers he was unaware of the contents and was unable to provide the required license for the possession and transport of fireworks. Authorities noted this was the second time the same vessel had been involved in the illegal importation of fireworks from the CNMI. "This seizure is a reminder that it's not just drugs and people being smuggled between the CNMI and Guam," a law enforcement source said. "We're seeing an uptick in other forms of undeclared or illegal cargo-from fireworks to counterfeit goods." Guam law requires that any individual or business importing, distributing, or storing consumer fireworks obtain a license from the Guam Fire Department. The US Coast Guard, which responded to the scene, confirmed the boat is registered as a recreational vessel and is not legally authorized to tow cargo. The Coast Guard is now conducting its own investigation into possible safety and regulatory violations. The intercepted fireworks were seized for safekeeping and will be referred to the Guam Fire Department for further action.
