
UPSI student bus crashes with MPV on East-West Highway in Gerik, at least 15 dead; PM instructs Higher Education Ministry to coordinate aid
IPOH, June 9 — At least 15 people were killed in an accident involving a bus carrying students from Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) and a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle on the East-West Highway in Banun, Gerik this morning.
The Hulu Perak operations control centre of the Civil Defence Force (APM) received an emergency call from Gerik Hospital regarding the collision at 1.10 am, national news agency Bernama reported.
The APM confirmed in a statement that 48 people were involved in the crash, with 13 pronounced dead at the scene.
Two more were reported to have died in the hospital.
Four others sustained injuries.
The bus was reported to have been travelling from Jertih in Terengganu, to Tanjung Malim in Perak.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of all the victims in the crash.
'I have instructed the Ministry of Higher Education to coordinate appropriate assistance for the families of the victims,' he said in an immediate Facebook post.
'Such heartbreaking tragedies, which happen all too often, should serve as a lesson to everyone to always be cautious and never rush in pursuit of a destination.
'Your lives are far too precious and irreplaceable,' he added.
In a separate Facebook post, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir said his ministry will provide all necessary assistance to those involved in the crash.
He extended his condolences to the families of the victims and said further information will be updated in due course.

UPSI crash update: 18 discharged, 15 victims still in hospital
IPOH: Eighteen of the 33 victims injured in the bus crash involving 42 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students on the East–West Highway in Gerik yesterday have been discharged from hospital, the Perak Health Department said. As of 10am today, the department said 15 victims remain under treatment at three hospitals: Taiping Hospital, Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB), and Baling Hospital. "Most of the victims sustained multiple traumatic injuries. None have been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) so far," the department said. On post-mortem examinations and the handling of bodies, the statement said 13 bodies were taken to HRPB for identification and post-mortem between 11.15am and 4.40pm yesterday. "This process was carried out by one antemortem team and three post-mortem teams, totalling 14 personnel. "Additionally, two bodies were examined at Gerik Hospital from 1pm to 6pm by a seven-member post-mortem team. All bodies have since been released to the families for burial. "To coordinate the incident response, we have activated an operations room in collaboration with the Hulu Perak district health office," the statement said. It also said that nine Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Services teams, comprising 40 personnel from both state and district levels, have been deployed to provide support to the victims and their families. "The Health Ministry, through the Perak Health Department, is closely monitoring developments and working hand-in-hand with all relevant agencies to ensure comprehensive support for all affected. "The department and the ministry extend their deepest condolences to the families of those who perished in the accident and wish a speedy recovery to those injured," the statement added. It was reported yesterday that the bus, which was carrying 42 UPSI students, was on its way from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus when it was involved in a collision with a Perodua Alza along the East-West Highway. Thirteen students died at the scene of the crash, while two others were pronounced dead at the hospital.

Education Ministry pledges care for teacher, kids caught in MPV–UPSI student bus crash
NIBONG TEBAL, June 10 — The Kedah State Education Department (JPN) is tasked to monitor the condition of a teacher and her family who were involved in yesterday's East-West Highway crash. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said she was informed that the teacher and her two children are currently receiving treatment at Hospital Baling in Kedah, Harian Metro reported today. 'So we have instructed the Kedah Education Department to take responsibility and remain committed to monitoring their condition. 'This teacher is currently undergoing treatment with her family, so their welfare and care are fully under the ministry's awareness and supervision,' she was quoted as telling reporters after attending a welcoming ceremony for Form Six students at Universiti Sains Malaysia's Engineering Campus here today. A family of four that was travelling in a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle was reported to have been rear-ended by a chartered bus carrying 42 students from Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) on the East-West Highway early last Monday. The Perodua Alza driver, Mohd Lutfi Radzi, 37, sustained light injuries and was discharged on the day of the collision; likewise his two-year-old son. His wife, identified as Nurul Ain Zakaria, 36, and their two children – six-year-old Nur Aisyah Nafishah and two-year-old Muhammad Ahsan Nafis – remain in hospital but are reported to be in stable condition.
