Maha govt announces subsidy of Rs 1.5 lakh to farmers for purchase of tractors

West Mumbai, June 30 (UNI) In a bid to boost the sale of electric tractors in the state, the Maharashtra government has taken a decision to give a subsidy of Rs 1.5 lakh to farmers if they purchase electric tractors for their work, said Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik today. This decision has been taken to reduce the cost of farmers and increase their income. Due to the increasing cost of diesel, the production cost of farmers is also increasing significantly. But their income is not rising that much in comparison, that is why, it has been decided to give a subsidy to farmers on electric tractors, said Sarnaik. The minister expressed that electric tractors would bring a new revolution in agriculture. "If farmers buy electric tractors, the state government will also provide them with a subsidy of Rs 1.5 lakh," he said. Along with this, interest-free loans will also be provided to farmers to buy tractors through the state government's Annasaheb Patil Economic Development Corporation, Sarnaik added. Ahmedabad customs seize smuggled goods worth Rs 163 crore in Gujarat

Ahmedabad: Signalling the scale of smuggling operations in Gujarat, the Ahmedabad Customs recently seized Rs 163 crore of smuggled goods, including 8 million counterfeit cigarettes, psychotropic substances, and luxury watches. The data was revealed by the chief commissioner of customs Ahmedabad zone, Pranesh Pathak, at a seminar conducted in the city on Monday. "As India's economy grows, it is becoming a bigger target for global smuggling networks. These crimes threaten public health, national security, and investor confidence," said Pathak. The announcement comes alongside new data from FICCI's anti-smuggling arm CASCADE, which pegged the size of India's illicit trade economy at Rs 7.98 lakh crore in FY23 in a report released by them. The five sectors most affected are FMCG (packaged foods), FMCG (personal and household care), alcohol, tobacco, and textiles and apparel. In fact, textiles and apparel alone accounted for over Rs 4 lakh crore of this, followed by FMCG products, alcohol, and tobacco, the report suggests. "Smuggling thrives on cost arbitrage created by high indirect taxes and regulatory gaps. When duties on products like tobacco, liquor, and gold are significantly high, it creates strong incentives for illegal trade, undermining legitimate businesses and eroding govt revenues. The disparity between legal and illegal market pricing not only distorts fair competition but also exposes citizens to spurious goods, which can become a grave public health issue. Tackling this issue requires a balanced tax policy along with robust enforcement and greater inter-agency coordination," said P C Jha, former chairman, Central Board of Indirect Taxes (CBIC). Pathak said enforcement was stepped up across land, sea, and air routes. "Recent seizures show just how aggressive and organised these networks have become," he said, referring to the Godhra Customs operation involving counterfeit cigarettes worth over Rs 150 crore.

Eco-friendly public transport: TN CM Stalin flags off 120 electric buses

Chennai, June 30 (UNI) For the first time in Tamil Nadu, Chennai has got its green fleet. Providing a green thrust to public transport in the state, Chief Minister MK Stalin flagged off 120 ultra-modern low-floor disabled friendly electric buses here today as part of the first phase. Each bus, when fully charged, could travel up to 200 km. The buses with 39 seats are equipped with passenger amenities including seat belts, CCTV cameras, mobile charging points, emergency clarms and LED displays, providing information on bus stops. This initiative comes under the Chennai City Partnership Programme, Chennai Sustainable Urban Services with financial support from the World Bank and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. The Chief Minister also inaugurated the Metropolitan Transport Corporation's Rs 47.50 crore upgraded electric bus depot at Vasarpadi in North Chennai. Before flagging off the blue colour fleet, he inspected the facilities in the buses and interacted with the crew. The electric fleet buses for public transport would reduce environmental pollution by bringing down CO2 emission and vastly improve air quality in the city. The MTC would roll out 625 buses in the First Phase at a total cost of Rs 697 crore. For the initial first km, each bus would be running on diesel emissions of 755 grams of carbon dioxide. With the administration taking steps to establish the necessary infrastructure like charging and maintenance facilities, the new electric buses would be operated from five other depots. When charged fully, these buses could run up to 200 km. Further, they have been designed to be disabled-friendly with a ramp making them wheelchair accessible and secure anchorage points. UNI XC SSP
