Michigan college baseball player apologizes for cocaine-inspired celebration

Yahoo18-03-2025

Michigan baseball infielder Mitch Voit apologized Monday for a celebration he described as "an immature decision in the heat of the moment" in his team's 11-0 victory against USC on Sunday.
After sliding head-first into third base early in the win, Voit lowered his nose to the third-base line and pantomimed snorting a line of cocaine.
"The gesture I made does not reflect my character, the household I was raised in, or the block M that I represent in any kind of way,' Voit wrote in a note that he posted on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. 'I take full responsibility for what I did, and I am truly sorry to all those who I have negatively impacted by doing this.'

Voit's celebration came after the junior from Milwaukee ripped a triple into center field that brought in three runs to stretch the Wolverines' lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the second inning.
Video clips of his gesture went viral on social media, with many finding it clever and humorous while others voiced their displeasure.

The moment overshadowed a stellar day at the plate for Voit, who went 3-for-3 with four RBI. It capped off a week in which he hit .667 in five games, a run that was highlighted by a four-hit outing in an 11-7 win last Wednesday at Michigan State. On the same day he published his apology, Voit was named Big Ten player of the week.
His red-hot week at the plate lifted Voit's batting average this season to a team-best .451. Voit also leads all Wolverines players in RBI (28), home runs (five), doubles (11), hits (32), runs (19) and walks (14).
As a sophomore last season, Voit was a first-team all-Big Ten selection as a utility player and earned academic all-conference recognition.
The win Sunday against USC improved Michigan's record to 11-8 overall and 3-3 in Big Ten play.

5-Star Oregon Football Target Makes Announcement After Visit With Ducks

5-Star Oregon Football Target Makes Announcement After Visit With Ducks originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning is up for a pivotal weekend, as he and his staff are hosting a handful of five-star and blue-chip prospects on official visits. Advertisement One name involved with the Ducks this week is five-star safety Joey O'Brien, who would be a massive get for Lanning and co. According to 247Sports, Oregon ranks No. 29 in the nation with their 2026 recruiting class at this time -- which is subpar to Lanning's standard in Eugene. Landing O'Brien, a Pennsylvania native, would be phenomenal for Lanning's class, especially if Oregon can receive commitments from others on the trip this week. Battling Penn State, Clemson and Notre Dame, Oregon will soon know where O'Brien will pledge his services, as the highly-touted safety has announced when he will make his announcement. Advertisement O'Brien will choose between the four programs on June 20, which isn't long after his visit with Oregon. "Almost that time!" O'Brien shared on X after his commitment date was revealed. Given that the Ducks are getting a great chance to sell the safety on landing in Eugene this close to his commitment, Lanning might be able to secure O'Brien over their new Big Ten rival, Penn State. Still, Penn State's proximity to O'Brien, as a Pennsylvania native, might give them a leg up when it comes to decision day. According to 247Sports, O'Brien is the No. 30-ranked prospect in the 2026 class and the No. 4-ranked safety. Advertisement The Ducks won't get the last word in the blue-chip recruitment, as he will be visiting Notre Dame next weekend to round out his trips before his commitment. Oregon would love to land O'Brien's services and bolster their 2026 recruiting class with another five-star talent, as they could be up for a pivotal few weeks. Midwest Spotlight: Four biggest June recruiting visits

June has become arguably the most important month in the recruiting calendar, with prospects crisscrossing the country on official visits and lining up announcement dates. Rivals national recruiting analyst Greg Smith looks at four Midwest prospects who are taking key visits this month. Advertisement THIS SERIES: Five biggest Southeast visits in June CLASS OF 2026 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State CLASS OF 2027 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State TRANSFER PORTAL: Full coverage | Player ranking | Team ranking | Transfer search | Transfer Tracker RIVALS CAMP SERIES: Rivals Five-Star heading back to Indy | Rivals Five-Star roster | Schedule/info MCHALE BLADE - Notre Dame, June 20 Blade is one of the top uncommitted defensive linemen in the country. He's already taken officials to Purdue and Wisconsin with the Badgers making a major move in his recruitment. He'll also take an official visit to Michigan and USC. Advertisement But the one I'm watching closest is the visit to Notre Dame. The Irish have long been the favorites in this recruitment. They'll get the final visit and the chance to shut down his recruitment. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH NOTRE DAME FANS AT CINCERE JOHNSON - Ohio State, June 13 Johnson plays for Glenville in Cleveland which has produced many Buckeyes over the years. Penn State and Alabama have made impressions on the linebacker but it's still hard to see him turning down the in-state Buckeyes. Coach Ryan Day and company will get the final visit just days before his June 19 announcement date. Advertisement The Nittany Lions and Tide have closed the gap ahead of that visit to Columbus. Can Ohio State finish this one off later this month? SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH OHIO STATE FANS AT CJ SADLER - Miami, June 13 Sadler's recruitment has been a real wild card this cycle. For a long time it seemed like he was a lock to end up in Ann Arbor and play for Michigan. Now I'm not so sure about that. In a move that surprised many, he took an official visit to Maryland and the Terps impressed during that trip. He'll also take an official to North Carolina (June 6) and Colorado (June 20). But it's the Miami visit that could move the needle most. The Hurricanes are always dangerous on the recruiting trail, led by coach Mario Cristobal. Combine that with the renewed NIL juice and general excitement about the direction of the program and it's a powerful punch. Advertisement Michigan and Michigan State are still lurking here, but that Miami visit on June 13 is very interesting. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH MIAMI FANS AT MACK SUTTER - Alabama, June 20 The Crimson Tide entered the official visit season as the favorites for the Illinois four-star tight end. Coach Kalen DeBoer and his staff have to wait until the end of June to get him on campus while he completes his other trips. Illinois, Ole Miss and Ohio State have already hosted Sutter and Penn State will get its shot on June 6. But Alabama has the final visit. Sutter loves the idea of playing for the SEC power and has a great relationship with the staff. My FutureCast is riding on the Tide to get this done and this visit will be a big one.
