Senate confirms Michael Kratsios to lead White House science, tech office
The Senate confirmed Michael Kratsios to head the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) with bipartisan support.
Kratsios, who was Trump's chief technology officer during his first White House term, was approved Tuesday by the upper chamber in a 74-25 vote.
Kratsios will play a crucial role in molding the administration's artificial intelligence (AI) agenda and will assist Trump in science and technology.
'It's an honor to serve as Director of the @whitehouse Office of Science & Technology Policy,' Kratsios said in a Tuesday post on social media platform X. 'Advancing American dominance in AI, emerging tech, and breakthrough science has never been so critical. Under @POTUS' leadership, we will unleash the Golden Age of American Innovation!'
Trump announced in December last year that he would tap Kratsios to be the director of OSTP. Kratsios graduated from Princeton University and has most recently been a managing director at Scale AI, a data annotation company based in San Francisco, according to his LinkedIn.
During his February confirmation hearing in front of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, Kratsios said it was paramount for the U.S. to continue being the world leader in emerging technologies and showed backing for federal funding for research and development. He defended cuts at the National Science Foundation and other agencies.
Kratsios was advanced out of the committee with a 24-4 vote.
Kratsios' Tuesday confirmation was also praised by Sriram Krishnan, an Indian-American entrepreneur, who Trump named as his senior advisor for AI.

The Independent has contacted the Pentagon for its response to her comments. Online, conservatives wasted no time in calling for the woman, subsequently identified as Carmen Colado, a former U.S. Army intelligence analyst, to be dishonorably discharged or court-martialled for publicly criticizing the commander-in-chief's orders. Some argued that her actions constituted a violation of the U.S. military's Uniform Code of Military Justice and called for Article 15 to be invoked against her, which empowers a commanding officer to order nonjudicial punishments less severe than a court-martial. These might include restrictions on duty, extra duty, forfeiture of pay, and, in some cases, confinement; however, since Colado appears to have left the service, it is unlikely to apply. She describes herself on Instagram as the 'proud daughter of an illegal immigrant hero who saved my life' and posts photos of friends and family, poetry, pencil drawings, and even a short film she has directed. Her posts also include an inspirational quote from Texas Democratic Rep. Al Green, who was censured for interrupting President Trump's address to a joint session of Congress earlier this year, on the occasion of a Dallas protest march calling for immigration reform. 'To protect liberty and justice for all – to protect government of the people, by the people, for the people – to protect what this country has in its great and noble ideals, we have to do what is necessary,' Green's quote reads.

Exclusive-India's central bank to use cash reserve ratio as active liquidity tool, says source
By Siddhi Nayak and Swati Bhat MUMBAI (Reuters) -India's central bank plans to use the cash reserve ratio more frequently to manage liquidity and aid policy transmission, rather than deploying it only during extreme cash swings, a source told Reuters on Wednesday. The person aware of the Reserve Bank of India's thinking declined to be identified because they are not authorised to speak to the media. The RBI did not reply to an email seeking comment. The central bank last week announced a surprise 100-basis-points reduction in CRR, the portion of deposits banks must park with the RBI, in four equal tranches, taking take it down to 3%. The move will release 2.5 trillion rupees ($29.25 billion) into the banking system. RBI governor Sanjay Malhotra had then said that the regulator was "comfortable" with a 3% CRR, but did not give other details. With banks' total deposit base having grown in recent years, the need to maintain the CRR at a minimum of 4% to manage crisis situations is no longer seen as necessary, the source said. "CRR is a good tool to have from a liquidity management perspective and the scope goes beyond just an emergency tool, it will be used more often from now," the person said, adding that the ratio could also be raised to absorb a large liquidity influx caused by sustained foreign inflows and is more efficient than conducting multiple open market operations. Between December and May, the RBI injected nearly $100 billion into the banking system via OMOs and FX swaps, its largest such infusion over a similar period. A shift toward managing liquidity via CRR, previously unreported, could reduce the need for bond buys that often distort market yields. ANCHORING RATES A large cash surplus in the banking system had also pushed the weighted average overnight call rate — the operative policy rate — well below the RBI's key repo rate, currently at 5.5%. "The RBI wants the overnight call rate to be around the repo rate, steps will be taken to ensure that happens," the source said, adding that the RBI could start conducting variable rate reverse repo auctions to suck out surplus liquidity as and when required. The source also said the central bank was uncomfortable with the 10-year benchmark yield falling significantly below existing levels. The RBI is currently in the process of drafting a revised liquidity management framework, and existing operations will continue until the new framework is finalised, the source said.
