James-Taylor penalty lifts Drogs above Bohs
Drogheda United's Douglas James-Taylor scored a very long-awaited first goal of the season from the penalty spot to help his side best Bohemians on the pitch and climb above them in a Premier Division table that remains as congested as ever towards the summit.
A serious thigh injury had robbed Drogheda of their star striker for much of the campaign but he is back now and Kevin Doherty will desperately hope they can hold onto him beyond this summer.
Six victories in their last seven matches have seen Bohs shed the inconsistency of the early campaign and begin to pose a more credible threat towards the business end of the Premier Division table.
With that, expectations begin to rise and they are almost always sky high at Dalymount Park in any case. However, Alan Reynolds's outfit arrived at fortress Sullivan & Lambe Park – Drogheda have only lost at home twice in their last 17 league games, both to Shamrock Rovers – without a draw yet this season.
Drogheda, for their part, have been draw specialists in recent times. No team had drawn more than their eight in 17 matches this term. There would be a winner, however.
James-Taylor, a talisman of last season's cup winning side but without a goal this year as he works his way back to full fitness following that lengthy injury absence, had United's best opportunities of the first half.
He twice made Kacper Chorazka work with fierce drives and Drogs supporters will note with glee that, goal aside, his contributions are improving with every passing game.
It was the visitors who went closest though before the interval. From Dawson Devoy's cross, Dayle Rooney's header had goalkeeper Luke Dennison beaten, despite a full stretch dive, but bounced off the post in any case.
There was significant League of Ireland representation in Jim Crawford's latest Republic of Ireland Under 21 squad named this week with six current domestic based players and a further 10 who have come through the system here.
Two of those – Bohs's Sean Grehan and Drogheda's Warren Davis – were in direct combat by the Boyne.
James-Taylor, the on-loan Walsall striker, had his moment when Grehan fouled Conor Keeley in the penalty area. He made no mistake from 12 yards, blasting his penalty kick high into the net.
Late in the game, Bohs cranked up the pressure but Drogheda withstood the heat. They were fortunate when Colm Whelan's shot crashed off the bar but then Dennison produced a double save to deny substitutes Hugh Smith and Archie Meekison.

Irish rugby player throws his support behind expansion plans at local Wexford club
In 2024, New Ross launched the 300 Club, a fundraising effort with an ambitious development plan to build new dressing rooms and install a 4G pitch. This will cater for the growing numbers and future proof the club for more success down the line, such as that of Tadhg Furlong, the international Irish rugby star who continues to support his local club. Tadhg started playing rugby with New Ross as a mini player in 1998, playing with the u8's despite being a couple of years young for the team at the time. He was always a standout mini player and put in some memorable performances at the various u10 and u12 blitzes that were to follow. His late father James helped to coach these minis teams, offering a wealth of rugby advice that he had built up from playing as a prop himself for the New Ross 1st XV for many years. James is fondly remembered by everyone in New Ross RFC, especially those who were lucky to be part of these mini teams growing up. When Tadhg graduated to youth rugby he continued to stand out, he had settled into life as a tight head prop but also did some lineout throwing, could pass off both sides and had a left boot that many out halves would be proud of. In 2006, when New Ross won the u14 McGowan Cup for the first time in their history, Tadhg played at prop in the final against Edenderry RFC where New Ross came out on top in a 6-0 thriller. Tadhg was now part of a team that knew how to win, and he was usually found leading the way with tackles and strong carries. He made his way up through u16 rugby, always competing at premier division level and becoming a household name amongst many opposing teams. Tadhg played his last season with New Ross in 2009 to 2010, aged 17, whilst also navigating the Leaving Certificate as well as being a Leinster and Irish youth player. New Ross was again victorious in this season, winning the Leinster League u19 Premier Division beating south-east rivals, Enniscorthy, in a 9-8 final win. Tadhg set the standards in this team, but this was also a talented group who were well able to mix it with the best players in Leinster at the time. But for all of his success, Furlong has never forgotten where it all started. 'I think New Ross Rugby Club, the start they gave me, the friends I've made there, what they give from a social aspect to our family as well, it's been a big part of my life,' he added. 'They are proud rugby people in that part of the world.' Tadhg is now a New Ross RFC supporter, and is often on the bank on a Sunday in Southknock, the home of New Ross RFC. The rugby club has continued to grow and is a very different club to the one Tadhg started off in back in 1998, as it now boasts seven minis and 13 youth teams, as well as a senior section with first and second teams for both men and ladies. In April 2025, IRFU president Declan Madden visited New Ross and turned the sod on the new dressing room building. As works are under way, the club is calling for support with their 300 Club fundraising campaign, whereby they seek 300 participants to contribute €30 per month for three years. Sligo beat Waterford to move off bottom spot
Sligo Rovers 1 Waterford 0 Jessica Farry reports from The Showgrounds SLIGO ROVERS moved off the Premier Division's bottom spot thanks to a 1-0 win over Waterford at the Showgrounds on Saturday evening. The victory means John Russell's men overtake struggling Cork City. Wilson Waweru's 20th-minute goal was the difference as the Bit O'Red won just a fourth game of the season. Sligo were hoping the mid-season break would be a catalyst for their turnaround in form. Waweru made his first start since returning from injury, with Russell asking his players to reflect on their contribution to the season so far before the break. John Coleman returned to the home of his former employers for the first time since taking over as Waterford manager, with former Sligo captain Danny Ventre also making a return, this time as Waterford assistant boss. The Blues had lost just once in their last seven games, but sat eighth coming into Saturday's fixture, although 10 points clear of Cork City. In truth, the first half was lacking when it came to entertainment, and Waweru's goal was the talking point at the halfway mark. Jad Hakiki pulled it back for Waweru in a crowded box, and the Galway native held his composure fantastically to find the net with his first goal of the season. John Mahon got his head in the way of James Olayinka's effort, with Waterford only really producing half-chances. Tommy Lonergan's strong header was well held by Sargeant in the Sligo goal, while Waterford felt they should have had a penalty on 76 minutes, when the ball took a slight touch off John Mahon as he went to make a clearance. Padraig Amond poked wide as the Blues put the pressure on, but in the end, Sligo held out for what could be a vital win.
