Former five-star OT Andrew Babalola making big strides in spring ball
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Usually, when a college football team gets a five-star recruit, you can count on said prospect seeing the field early. However, that's not always true when it comes to one position group: the offensive line.
While some Michigan football fans hope to see five-star offensive tackle Andrew Babalola see the field early, the most optimum situation for the Wolverines would be the elder statesmen to earn the job while Babalola develops. At the moment, that appears to be the case, but that doesn't mean the Overland Park (Kan.) Blue Valley Northwest standout hasn't made strides since arriving in Ann Arbor in December.
According to expected left tackle starter Evan Link, Babalola has shown a lot of progress from where he was when he first got to take part in ReliaQuest Bowl practices for Alabama, noting that he's got some aspects to his game that other players just won't be able to replicate.
"Yeah, he's a great kid, he doesn't talk much, but he's a really good dude," Link said. "But no, he's gotten a lot better, just because he's got some pretty freaky traits that, you know -- he's going to be a really, really, really good player coming down the line. But no, he's definitely taken a step from where he was in bowl prep to where he is now."
Could Babalola end up finding a role at some point this season? Considering that Michigan likes to often run six offensive lineman sets, it wouldn't surprise.
Fans will get an opportunity to see him on April 19 when Michigan hosts the annual spring game at The Big House.

He's listed as the No. 18 prospect out of Oklahoma and the No. 90 defensive lineman overall. Out of the 12 commits from the class of 2026, the offense is crowding up the most. Kayd Coffman, Joey Caudill, Eddie Whiting, Eli Bickel, Cory House, Collin Campbell, Quinn Buckey, and Braylon Hodge make up the eight recruits on the offensive side of the ball. Defensive tackle Chris Knauls, safeties Eliyjah Caldwell-Hardy and Brayden Thomas, and cornerback K.J. Deriso are the only defensive players to commit so far. In the 2024 season, the Spartans' defense was 15th in the Big Ten for average points allowed (26.1) and 10th in their conference for yards allowed per game (332). If head coach Jonathan Smith can land a few more defensemen out of the class of 2026, the near and far future of Michigan State could start an upwards trend. "I only get one shot at this, so I want to make sure I'm making the right decision for the long term." Of his 32 offers as of now, the Spartans will have conference competition with Oregon, Penn State, Ohio State, USC, Washington, and Nebraska for the four-star safety. Suddenly among the class of the NFL, once downtrodden Detroit's projected to win ten games — yet it's being viewed by some as a negative. Advertisement LIONS' WIN/LOSS ODDS: Over 9.5 Wins: (+105) In a league where year-over-year success relies so heavily on improvement, the Lions' questions this summer revolve around recovery from losses. First and foremost on the docket must be former Head Coach Ben Johnson, who played a prominent role in Detroit's renaissance as both passing and offensive coordinator. DET turned around a 3-13-1 record in 2021 to win 36 games over the next three regular seasons with Johnson at the helm. Detroit's 2024 offensive macros make a case for best in the game (33.2 PPG, 409.5 yards/game, 2.3 first downs/drive, 52.8% success rate, 0.15 EPA/play) — and I guess I'm struggling to resolve they simply forget how to play without Johnson. Dan Campbell's still guiding the ship with a trusted QB under center, and even brought in former Senior offensive assistant John Morton as the new offensive coordinator. Point being, the vast majority of cogs in the offensive engine return for 2025. A second loss looms much larger by my accounting, as star offensive lineman Frank Ragnow suddenly announced his retirement. Detroit drafted OL Tate Ratledge (2.57) and G Miles Frazier (5.171) but didn't do much else to bolster the trenches — and they'll likely take a step backward. The negatives seem to be piling up for Detroit but remember, this team won 15 games in 2024. At what point is all this baked into a 50/50 proposition to get five full games worse in a single offseason? The more I look I the schedule, believe it or not, the answer's yes. Advertisement As I wrote about briefly in our NFC North preview series, it's arguable no one drew a shorter schedule straw than Detroit. The division itself is already a gauntlet, and on top of that, they get KC, TB and LAR as their one-off opponents. LAGHEZZA'S LEAN: I hate the idea of short-selling a team this well-coached and talented on both sides of the ball. However, the Lions schedule is BRUTAL. They'll play four out of five incredibly tough games before the Week 8 bye on the road (@ GB, @ BAL, @ CIN, @ KC) — and it doesn't get much easier after that, opening back up vs MIN, then @ WAS and @ PHI. Yikes. It's entirely plausible with a few bad bounces Detroit's below .500 leaving Philly, where they'd have to essentially win out to cash. It's possible I regret going against my gut to the over but I'm not touching this.
