Saudi Arabia's digital economy grows to 15.6% of GDP in 2023, GASTAT says

RIYADH — Saudi Arabia's digital economy accounted for 15.6% of the Kingdom's gross domestic product (GDP) in 2023, reflecting a 1.6% increase compared to 2022, according to the latest bulletin released by the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT).
The 2023 Digital Economy Statistics Bulletin highlights significant growth in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector, which continues to play a central role in the Kingdom's economic diversification and digital transformation goals.
Imports of ICT goods reached SR54.9 billion in 2023, up from SR45.8 billion the previous year, marking a growth rate of 19.9%.
Meanwhile, exports and re-exports of ICT products surged by 76.1%, rising from SR6.7 billion in 2022 to SR11.8 billion in 2023.
The report also noted that 71.6% of internet-connected establishments in Saudi Arabia are now using smart systems or devices. These include smart meters, lighting, alarm systems, and surveillance cameras, pointing to growing technological integration in the private sector.
The ICT sector's total operating revenues stood at approximately SR236.4 billion last year, while operating expenses reached SR115.4 billion.
Compensation paid to employees within the sector amounted to SR27.5 billion, emphasizing the sector's importance as an economic and employment driver.
GASTAT categorized the digital economy into three levels based on international standards developed by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The basic level, which includes core ICT production activities, contributed 2.6% to GDP.
Establishments that rely on digital inputs, classified under the narrow level, accounted for 2.3%, while the broad level, which reflects companies enhancing their products and services through digital integration, represented the largest share at 10.7%.
The bulletin emphasized that the Kingdom's digital economy statistics were compiled in line with UNCTAD's international guidelines to ensure comparability and transparency, positioning Saudi Arabia as a rising digital hub regionally and globally.

GASTAT Announces 1,673,230 Pilgrims for Hajj
The General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) announced on Thursday that a total of 1,673,230 pilgrims are performing Hajj. Of these, 1,506,576 arrived from abroad, while 166,654 are from within the Kingdom, including both citizens and residents. According to a GASTAT press release, male pilgrims, both internal and external, totaled 877,841, while female pilgrims numbered 795,389. GASTAT also revealed that 1,435,017 pilgrims arrived in the Kingdom via airports, 66,465 through land border crossings, and 5,094 via seaports. GASTAT's methodology for these statistics relies primarily on administrative records from the Ministry of Interior. This approach, which has been consistently adopted over the past five years, aims to provide high-accuracy and reliable register-based data for Hajj statistics, utilizing a standardized model with several key components. As the Kingdom's official statistical authority, GASTAT is the exclusive provider of official statistics in Saudi Arabia and is entrusted with overseeing all national statistical activities, including technical supervision, conducting field surveys and research, data analysis, and managing the documentation, preservation, and tabulation of statistical information across all sectors of life in the Kingdom. Smart medical wristband launched to monitor field officers' health during Hajj
Saudi Gazette report MAKKAH — For the first time during the Hajj season, Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Interior has introduced a smart medical wristband powered by artificial intelligence and Internet of Things (IoT) technology to enhance the health and safety of security personnel serving pilgrims in the field. The wearable device continuously monitors the vital signs of officers deployed across the holy sites and sends real-time alerts to the Command and Control Center at the Security Forces Hospital in Makkah. In advanced or emergency cases, medical intervention is immediately dispatched. The Command and Control Center is equipped with electronic screens directly connected to the wristbands. A specialized medical team monitors the incoming data, classifies cases by urgency, and generates heatmaps to track health risks among personnel. The system enables proactive medical response based on real-time health indicators. The wristband is also capable of sending SOS alerts directly to the center, facilitating instant communication between the medical team and the officer, and allowing field units to provide immediate assistance. The system is fully compliant with national cybersecurity standards and data privacy regulations established by the National Cybersecurity Authority and the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA).

Saudi Arabia to host second WTO regional trade policy course in 2025
Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — The General Authority for Foreign Trade (GAFT) held a virtual meeting with the World Trade Organization (WTO) to discuss preparations for the second edition of the Regional Trade Policy Course (RTPC), scheduled to take place in the Kingdom in 2025. Deputy Governor for Shared Services Nasser Al-Dughaither, represented GAFT in the meeting. The meeting, included GAFT's Director General of Human Resources Hamoud Al-Malki and Director of Talent and Development Badr Al-Ajlan, focused on enhancing cooperation to organize the RTPC, improving the course's quality and outcomes, and developing specialized workshops for stakeholders involved in trade negotiations. These efforts aim to deepen participants' understanding of WTO agreements, rules, and procedures. Al-Dughaither emphasized that Saudi Arabia's three-year hosting of the RTPC reflects its global economic leadership, particularly in the Middle East, and aligns with national goals to empower regional trade policymakers and elevate their capacity to meet international trade standards. He expressed optimism about the upcoming edition, building on the success of the previous course, which featured robust scientific content and active participant engagement. The first edition of the RTPC was hosted in Saudi Arabia from October 13 to December 5, 2024, in partnership with King Saud University and the WTO. It saw participation from around 25 government officials representing nine countries, along with 12 Saudi government entities, covering over 24 training topics.
