Don't seek prolonged wars as they impact economy: CDS Anil Chauhan
New Delhi: Prolonged wars and extended troop mobilisations have a significant economic cost and can hamper national development, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan said on Saturday, referring to the recent India-Pakistan conflict . "From an economic standpoint, prolonged mobilisations impose a huge financial burden. India has remained mobilised for months without actual combat, and that is unsustainable. We disengage swiftly once an operation concludes. We do not seek prolonged wars because they slow national development-a goal some adversaries may want to hinder," General Chauhan said at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. Responding to speculation about Chinese assistance to Pakistan during the conflict, the CDS said there is no definitive proof that Beijing provided real-time targeting information, though he acknowledged that over 80% of Pakistan's military equipment comes from China. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "While Pakistan likely leveraged Chinese sources, we haven't seen hard evidence of real-time targeting support. In contrast, India relied on indigenous systems like Akash, which performed well in integrating various platforms, including imported radars, into a cohesive defence system," he said. Downplaying concerns of nuclear escalation, General Chauhan said both sides displayed rational behaviour during the conflict. "I saw rationality in both thought and action. So why assume that there will be irrationality in the nuclear domain?" he told Reuters on the sidelines of the event. Live Events In a seminar session, the CDS said it was plausible that Pakistan used Chinese or Western commercial satellite imagery and may have sought assistance from allies. He reiterated India's focus on self-reliance in defence modernisation, noting that imported systems may not always be reliable-particularly in networked warfare scenarios. Gen Chauhan also revealed that nearly 15% of operational time during Operation Sindoor was spent countering disinformation, much of it on social media. He underlined the urgent need for a dedicated information warfare vertical to address this emerging challenge.

Kolkata Cops Defend Influencer's Arrest Over Communal Post, BJP Slams TMC's 'Appeasement Politics'
Last Updated: Sharmishta Panoli, 22, was arrested by Kolkata Police in Haryana's Gurugram for allegedly making communal remarks on an Instagram post linked to Operation Sindoor. Kolkata Police has defended its arrest of social media influencer Sharmishta Panoli, saying all legal procedures were duly adhered to and she was granted transit remand to Kolkata as per due process of law. Sharmishta Panoli, a 22-year-old law student and an influencer, was arrested by Kolkata Police on Friday night in Haryana's Gurugram for her alleged controversial remarks linked to India's Operation Sindoor. She was brought to Kolkata on transit remand and produced before a court, which sent her to judicial custody till June 13. Several users on social media came out in defence of Panoli and called her arrest unlawful. However, Kolkata Police issued a statement, saying certain narratives suggesting an unlawful arrest were 'factually incorrect and misleading". 'All legal procedures were duly adhered to. All attempts were made to serve notice, but she was found absconding on every occasion. Consequently, a warrant of arrest was issued by the competent court, following which she was apprehended lawfully from Gurgaon. She was thereafter produced before the appropriate magistrate and granted transit remand as per due process of law," it added. BJP Slams 'Appeasement Politics' Meanwhile, West Bengal's Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari criticised the Trinamool Congress for Panoli's arrest, accusing the party of appealing to a 'certain community" for their vote banks. Speaking to reporters, Adhikari said, 'FIR was filed against Mahua Moitra also. She made derogatory comments about Goddess Kali. Was any action taken? What did their (TMC) MP, Saayoni Ghosh, post regarding Mahadev? Was any action taken? There have been so many FIRs against Firhad Hakim, but there has been no action." 'The action is only taken against Sanatanis. Everyone here has a licence to abuse Sanatana… This is appeasement politics. A certain community is their vote bank and this is for appeasement," he added. Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan said Panoli had owned up to her mistake and apologised. He lambasted the TMC for 'deep, searing pain" when the party MPs mock Sanatana Dharma. 'Where is the outrage when our faith is called 'Gandha Dharm'? Where is their apology? Where is their swift arrest?" he said. 'Blasphemy must be condemned, always! Secularism isn't a shield for some and a sword for others. It must be a two-way street. West Bengal Police, the nation is watching. Act justly for all," Kalyan added. During Operation Sindoor, Sharmistha, a law student, spoke out, her words regrettable and hurtful to some. She owned her mistake, deleted the video and apologized. The WB Police swiftly acted, taking action against what about the deep, searing pain inflicted… — Pawan Kalyan (@PawanKalyan) May 31, 2025 BJP MP and actress Kangana Ranaut also came out in Panoli's defence on her Instagram story. 'I agree that Sharmishta used some unpleasant words for her expression, but such words most youngsters use these days. She apologised for her statements and that should be enough, no need to bully and harass her further. She should be released immediately," Ranaut said. First Published: May 31, 2025, 22:39 IST

No one trusts Bandi Sanjay's comments on Congress: TPCC leader
HYDERABAD TPCC official spokesperson Chanagani Dayakar has dismissed Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar's claims that Congress is behind the controversy related to BRS MLC K. Kavitha's letter to her father and party chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao and termed them baseless. Speaking to the media on Saturday, he accused BJP and BRS of enacting a drama as they are hand in glove. He also alleged that the BJP led Central government is protecting the corrupt BRS party. Mr. Dayakar questioned the BJP's credibility, pointing out that the party has failed to address the people's concerns and has instead resorted to spreading false propaganda. 'People of Telangana have known about BRS and BJP's drama politics for 11 years,' he said. The TPCC spokesperson also slammed Sanjay for his comments on Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, calling them shameful and baseless. 'It's unfortunate that Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay is not even aware that the phone tapping case is being investigated,' Dayakar added. He defended Indira Gandhi, saying that Bandi Sanjay doesn't have the stature to comment on the former Prime Minister. Questioning the BJP government's intentions, he asked why Prime Minister Modi didn't call an all-party meeting after Operation Sindoor ended, despite having called one before it. He also accused BJP leaders of being protective shields for the BRS party. Dayakar claimed that the BJP will not come to power in Telangana as the people are disgusted with the BJP led by central government's rule for 11 years.
