This Special Chrysler Pacifica Celebrates a "Century of Innovation"

Motor Trend2 days ago

Chrysler celebrates its 100th birthday today—as in, exactly today, June 4, 2025. As part of the little party it's throwing itself, Chrysler is releasing a new special-edition model highlighting its century of existence and what it refers to as a "century of innovation."
No doubt Chrysler has found itself at the vanguard of automotive design and engineering at a few points throughout its history, from its groundbreaking 1930s Airflow that helped usher in aerodynamic faired-in bodywork—rather than the spindly separate fenders you'd see on, say, a Model T—to the oddball turbine-powered concept cars of the 1960s to, well, the modern American minivan, which it invented in the early 1980s.
It is perhaps fitting, then, that Chrysler's special-edition 100th Anniversary model is a Pacifica minivan, the modern descendant of the brand's last big-time innovation. On the other hand, there is nothing else for Chrysler to slap some special badges and such onto; the brand has been whittled down over the years to a single model. (Yes, the Pacifica comes in three flavors—the Pacifica with a gas-only V-6, the Pacifica Hybrid with a plug-in hybrid system, and the low-priced Voyager—but they're trim levels of the same vehicle.) Other notable Chryslers have been long gone for years, including the 300 sedan, leaving the brand akin to an old person whose kids never visit.
On the upside, Chrysler is said to have some interesting new models in the works, and the Chrysler Pacifica remains a top minivan. True to Chrysler's nods to innovation, it's packed with several class-exclusive features that serve as a reminder that the company not only invented this segment in America, it's arguably perfected it. Nonhybrid Pacificas enjoy clever Stow 'n Go second-row seats that, when upright, leave roomy underfloor cubbies for hidden storage. Or you can fold those seats flat into the floor cubbies, leaving a cavernous, flat floor for hauling cargo or setting up an impromptu hangout space. The Pacifica Hybrid is the only plug-in hybrid minivan on sale, as well, delivering class-leading efficiency and a solid 32 miles of electric-only driving range.
And as we pointed out in a recent minivan comparison test (which the Pacifica won), while other vans might drive with more verve (Honda's Odyssey) or deliver more flash (Kia's Carnival), the well-rounded Pacifica delivers solid performance, comfort, and features across the board while nailing the small stuff that parents who buy minivans might appreciate, such as buttons and controls for the doors and seats that are easy to find and operate. So, What Does the Pacifica 100th Anniversary Edition Come With?
The 100th Anniversary Pacifica starts out as an entry-level Pacifica or Pacifica Hybrid Select, and adds special 20-inch wheels painted Luster Gray (only on the gas Pacifica—Hybrids likely wear slightly different 18-inchers, since no Hybrid offers 20s), "Est. 1925" winged badges on the rearmost roof pillars, and Granite Crystal exterior trim, including the grille. The window trim is blacked out, as it is on the one-level-up Limited trim and its "S" package, as are the door mirrors. In aggregate, the changes are handsome—but they're also somewhat familiar. The very same wheel designs and gray trim have appeared on Pacificas before, most recently on the Road Tripper package available in 2024.
Buyers can choose from three paint colors: Red Hot, Bright White, and—seemingly new for 2026—Hydro Blue. That blue is brighter and more electric than the Fathom Blue offered for 2025, and also appears elsewhere in parent company Stellantis' U.S. lineup, namely on Jeeps and Rams.
Chrysler also tosses in some extra standard content, such as the Safety Sphere package optional on regular Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid Select models that includes front parking sensors and a 360-degree parking camera.
Pricing for the 100th Anniversary Edition is pretty decent, too. A 2026 Pacifica 100th Anniversary Edition will cost just $1,925 more than a regular 2026 Pacifica Select, while the special edition runs an extra $1,495 on Pacifica Hybrids. That isn't a lot of extra cheddar for the 100th Anniversary Edition's special touches, considering the included Safety Sphere package normally adds $1,280 to the Pacifica's price tag. That means the styling goodies are only a few hundred bucks.
Chrysler has not yet released destination charges for its 2026 vehicles (they are $1,995 for 2025), but the MSRPs of the gas Pacificas are $42,465 for the Select, $44,390 for the 100th Anniversary, $51,070 for the Pacifica Hybrid Select, and $52,565 for the Hybrid 100th Anniversary Edition. Comparing 2026 MSRPs listed above with the 2025 model year, the 2026 Pacifica (at least in Select trim) will only cost $15 more than a 2025 Pacifica Select (MSRP: $42,450). Do we wish Chrysler's celebration of innovation were more, um, innovative? Sure, but minivan customers are getting a good deal out of it, at least. The order books open in June for U.S. and Canadian customers.

The entirely predictable Trump-Musk divorce threatens Musk's business empire

Elon Musk's decision to go all in on Donald Trump never made much sense. His scorched-earth approach to breaking up with Trump is even harder to square. As a close Trump ally, Musk's actions inevitably affected Tesla – the biggest piece of his business empire and the maker of one of the most visible and expensive items that Americans can purchase: electric vehicles. First, Musk turned off Tesla's core customers, Democrats on the coasts, by pouring money and using his influence to help Trump return to the White House. Then he took a chainsaw to the federal workforce. Trump confirmed their relationship has soured, with Musk repeatedly blasting the president's sweeping domestic agenda bill in recent days and a public fight on social media on Thursday. Now, Musk's war of words with the president risk turning off the same Trump voters who may have considered buying a Tesla until this week. Not only that, but Tesla's ambitions for self-driving vehicles require government approval, something that no longer looks like a sure thing amid the Musk-Trump feud. Other Musk businesses like SpaceX are built on government contracts – contracts that Trump wasted no time threatening on Thursday. The past 12 months – with Musk marrying himself to the polarizing Trump brand and then breaking up with him – look like a textbook example of what a CEO should not do, especially a consumer-facing CEO. 'It's a bit of a head-scratcher that Musk is going so rogue-negative towards Trump so quickly. It's a potentially very hazardous path,' Dan Ives, a senior equity research analyst at Wedbush Securities and a longtime Tesla bull, told CNN in a phone interview on Thursday. The Musk-Trump break-up, playing out on the billionaires' respective social media platforms, was both entirely predictable and shocking nonetheless. After Musk blasted Trump's policy bill as a 'disgusting abomination' earlier this week, Trump suggested Musk has 'Trump derangement syndrome.' Musk responded by undercutting Trump's political prowess, saying: 'Without me, Trump would have lost the election.' As two of the world's most powerful people continued to trade public barbs, Tesla shares dropped lower and lower. Tesla shares (TSLA) plummeted 14% on Thursday as the bromance between Trump and Musk imploded in front of the entire world. The selloff erased about $152 billion from Tesla's market value and $34 billion off Musk's net worth, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Tesla shareholders are dismayed on multiple levels. First, Musk taking on the president so publicly could further shrink the car maker's customer base by angering Trump backers. 'You could end up alienating both sides of the aisle in the course of just a few months. When you're a consumer-facing company, that's the opposite of what you want to do,' Ives said. Secondly, Tesla relies on the federal government for tax credits and for approval of its controversial full-self driving technology, a green light that investors had been hoping for after the election. Neuralink, Musk's brain chip startup, is also reliant on FDA approval. Bigger picture, the Trump administration will help set the regulatory landscape for autonomous vehicles, not to mention artificial intelligence and other Musk priorities. And the president has not been shy about flexing the power of the federal government to hurt his opponents. 'You want Trump nice in the sandbox. You don't want Trump on your bad side,' Ives said. Bill George, an executive fellow at the Harvard Business School and former CEO of health tech company Medtronic, described the recent feud as a 'brutal breakup.' 'Never go to war with the president of the United States,' he said. 'There's going to be a lot of collateral damage to your business.' Trump threatened on Thursday to go after Musk's business empire. 'The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon's Governmental Subsidies and Contracts,' Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social. 'I was always surprised that Biden didn't do it! SpaceX, Musk's privately held space company, relies heavily on federal contracts, especially from NASA. SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet recently won business from the Federal Aviation Administration to help the agency upgrade networks used to manage US airspace. Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, founder of the Yale Chief Executive Leadership Institute, said the lesson is not about CEOs taking political positions. 'The lesson here is that there is no honor among thieves. These are two mob bosses that have had a parting of ways. And now they are going to take each other down,' Sonnenfeld told CNN. Harvard Business School's George noted that Musk and Trump had been acting like 'best bros' just days earlier. 'The lesson here is that you can either work in government or run your business,' George said. 'But you can't do both.'

Farewell Honda Civic Type R: Hot Hatch Pulled From Europe

Honda Civic Type R Ultimate Edition After 28 years and six generations, the Honda Civic Type R is being pulled from the U.K. and European markets. However, to commemorate its long production run, Honda is building a limited-edition car. Honda said it will remove the Civic Type R in 2026. "The industry is changing, and our model range is having to evolve with it in accordance with European legislation. However, Type R has always been Honda's ultimate expression of our passion for driving excitement, and we look forward to celebrating its heritage in the weeks and months ahead.' Sadly, the Honda Civic Type R does not comply with the stricter upcoming emissions standards set by the European Union and the U.K. The aforementioned special edition car, monikered the Ultimate Edition, will celebrate the Civic Type R's legacy as it bows out in Europe. Only 40 cars will be produced (10 destined for the U.K.), each featuring signature Champion White paintwork with contrasting red stripes, a nod to the model's traditional interior color. Honda Civic Type R There's no mention of extra performance, but the sixth generation car it's based on develops 324 bhp and 310 lb-ft, meaning 0-to-62 mph in 5.4 seconds and 171 mph flat out. The Honda Civic Type R also holds the crown for being the fastest front-wheel-drive car around Suzuka Circuit, Japan, with a time of 2`23". The Honda Civic Type-R joins other axed front-wheel-drive hot hatches like the Ford Focus ST and Hyundai i30N. This leaves the Volkswagen Golf and Polo GTI, Mini Cooper S, and its spicier JCW sibling. Fortunately, the four-wheel drive hot hatch market is fronted by the Volkswagen Golf R, Mercedes-Benz AMG A45 S, and Toyota GR Yaris, and more manufacturers are releasing electrified alternatives. Honda Civic Type R EK9 Honda never sold the first-gen (EK9) Civic Type R in the U.K. However, Honda introduced its second-gen EP3 into the market as an indirect Integra Type R replacement. And, by God, it caused a storm. The Honda Civic Type R's 2.0-liter four-cylinder screamed to 8,000 rpm and developed 197 bhp at 7,400 rpm. This, combined with a stunning chassis and modest pricing, made it an immediate hit. They are a rarer sight on British roads today, but many fine examples still exist. The spaceship-like FN2 arrived in 2007, powered by the same engine. However, Japan received a more powerful and lighter variant; the U.K. car was 153kg heavier than the previous model. In 2015, the FK2 arrived with a turbocharged powerplant aimed at higher-powered machines; this was the first Type R to nudge nearly 170 mph. Finally, the fifth (FK8) and sixth (FL5) generation cars arrived in 2017 and 2023. Honda Civic Type R Ultimate Edition Many argue that the FK8 was the finest front-wheel-drive hot hatch of its time; some even said it was the best front-wheel-drive performance car full stop. Still, its styling unfavored against older models. Finally, the FL5. This is a sublime machine that you can take the kids to school in before hitting some backroads. The chassis was beautifully balanced, the brakes had bite, and the tires had more grip. We will be sad to see it go, but perhaps it is for the best. Cars are girthier now, which means more weight, and with stringent regulations, this could also result in less power. Type R's have allowed the driver to become part of the machine, and removing that engagement would break our hearts even more. Farewell, Honda Civic Type R.
