England's star spinner Sophie Ecclestone returns as Three Lions announce their squad for India series

India Gazette2 days ago

New Delhi [India] June 13 (ANI): England have named a 14-member squad for their upcoming T20I series against India starting from June 28, with star spinner Sophie Ecclestone making her much-anticipated return, according to the ICC website.
Ecclestone, ranked No.1 and No.4 in the ICC Women's ODI and T20I Bowler Rankings, respectively, returns after a temporary break from cricket.
The England squad, who are already brimming with confidence after a dominant 3-0 series win over West Indies in the T20I as well as the ODI series, will be bolstered by her return.
This series marked a successful start to Charlotte Edwards' tenure as head coach and Nat Sciver-Brunt's captaincy. Pacer Lauren Filer also makes a return to the squad after missing out on the West Indies series last month.
Amy Jones, who has been rising rapidly in the ICC Women's Player Rankings, has also been named in the strong unit.
Charlotte Edwards expressed her excitement about the prospect of facing India as well as the return of star spinner Ecclestone.
'There was lots to be happy about in the West Indies series but equally lots of things we want to keep improving on - we're always looking at getting better. Five games against India in front of big crowds at great venues will serve us really well. This is a significant series for us with the countdown well and truly underway towards the home ICC Women's T20 World Cup,' Edwards said.
'It's great to have Soph back, and we're looking forward to having her back in the group. She has obvious qualities and she'll be an asset to us.'
'It does mean Sarah Glenn misses out, we are blessed with a strong group of spinners and we unfortunately can't play them all. It's now a great opportunity for Sarah to go back to The Blaze and play some competitive cricket in the Vitality Blast.'
England Squad: Em Arlott, Tammy Beaumont, Lauren Bell, Alice Capsey, Charlie Dean, Sophia Dunkley, Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Filer, Amy Jones, Nat Sciver-Brunt (c), Paige Scholfield, Linsey Smith, Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Issy Wong. (ANI)

ICC takes BIG decision over BCCI's proposal of...

BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla. (PIC - X) New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) dream of hosting the World Test Championship Final (WTC Final) may remain unfulfilled for a few years. BCCI may get a big shock from the International Cricket Council (ICC). Since the inception of WTC, the final matches have been held in England. At the same time, BCCI had put forward the matter of holding the WTC Final in India to the ICC, but according to the Telegraph report, England will host the next three WTC Finals as well. BCCI will have to wait for 8 years: If England remains in control of the World Test Championship till the 2029-31 season, then India will have to wait for about eight long years to host the WTC final. According to the report, it can be announced in the ICC's annual conference to be held in Singapore in July 2025 that England will host the WTC final for the next three times as well. BCCI did not get a chance: The Board of Control for Cricket in India has been trying continuously for the last six years to get India the hosting rights of the WTC Final. But despite the ever-increasing influence of BCCI in world cricket, it could not get the hosting rights. Former BCCI secretary Jay Shah is currently the chairperson of the ICC, despite this, this opportunity seems to be slipping out of India's hands. The power of the WTC final is in the hands of England: The first final of the World Test Championship was played in the year 2021, which took place between India and New Zealand in Southampton, England. At the same time, the second WTC final was played in 2023 between India and Australia at the Oval ground in London. Now the third final is being played between Australia and South Africa at Lord's.

Pataudi's name to continue as part of IND vs ENG Tests in a different form

The name of the late Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi will remain part of the England–India Test rivalry, despite the planned introduction of a new trophy. Officials from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have confirmed that while the Pataudi Trophy will no longer be the official series prize, the iconic name will be honoured in another meaningful way—through a commemorative medallion, which will likely be awarded to the winning captain. The shift comes as part of a broader plan to refresh the branding of bilateral Test contests. However, the legacy of one of India's most respected cricketing figures will not be erased. This decision follows discussions between key stakeholders, including Sachin Tendulkar, who reportedly played a central role in advocating for the preservation of the Pataudi name in the series. Tendulkar, Shah Push for Pataudi's Legacy Crucially, the decision to retain Pataudi's name in the series came after Tendulkar personally expressed his desire to see the legacy continue. Sources suggest he spoke with both the ECB and BCCI, and was later supported by ICC Chair Jay Shah, who played a decisive role in shaping the new arrangement. With this, the boards have struck a balance—introducing a fresh trophy that reflects the modern era, while still paying tribute to one of Indian cricket's most regal icons. Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy Launch Deferred The newly proposed Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy was scheduled to be unveiled on 14 June at Lord's, on the sidelines of the World Test Championship Final. It was designed to honour James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar for their legendary contributions to the sport. Invitations for both players had already been sent out for the occasion. However, in the wake of the tragic Ahmedabad plane crash that took over 275 lives, the ECB and BCCI decided to postpone the event. According to a senior ECB source, the boards chose to defer the ceremony as a mark of respect for those affected by the disaster. A new date for the launch has not been finalised. Honouring Tradition Amid Change While the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy may eventually become the primary symbol of India–England Tests in England, the Pataudi medallion ensures that the historic significance of the rivalry is not lost. The medallion, likely to be awarded alongside the main trophy, will serve as a nod to the past, preserving the essence of the India–England Test tradition.

Yuvraj Singh Takes Cheeky Dig At Australia After WTC Final Loss: "It's Okay To..."

Legendary India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh took a cheeky dig at Australia following their loss to South Africa in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. South Africa's ended a 27-year ICC title drought, beating Australia by five wickets. South Africa's previous and only other ICC triumph came back in 1998 when they lifted the ICC KnockOut Trophy (now called as the Champions Trophy). Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Yuvraj extended wishes to the South Africa team, saying that the class of 2025 showed "resilience and character" and rose to the occasion in style. In the process, Yuvraj also took a lighthearted dig at the Pat Cummins -led Australian team. "The class of 2025 ends a 27-year wait and lifts the ICC World Test Championship Trophy in style! Huge congrats to the @ProteasMenCSA on a historic win at Lord's. I've always believed there's no greater measure of resilience and character than Test cricket, and South Africa rose to the occasion! #AidenMarkram's century was pure class. @KagisoRabada25, @marcojansen2000 and @NgidiLungi brought relentless intensity and #TembaBavuma led with calm and courage. A final worthy of the format. Tough luck #Australia! You know it's okay to let go of one trophy #WTCFinal," wrote Yuvraj. Aiden Markram, who ended day three on 102 not out, went on to make a magnificent 136, as the Proteas completed the chase in 83.4 overs to win the Ultimate Test, also marking their eighth straight win in the red-ball format. Markram, who was dismissed for a duck in the first innings, also shared a decisive 147-run stand with skipper Temba Bavuma, who made 66 despite a left hamstring strain. Though South Africa conceded a 74-run first-innings lead, they managed to complete the chase, with conditions becoming batting-friendly on day three at the Lord's. Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada also grabbed superb match figures of 9-110 and became one of the vital cogs in the side winning the championship. The championship-winning players and support staff will be returning home to South Africa on Wednesday and are expected to address a press conference after arriving at the OR Tambo International Airport.
