South Africa became Test champ thanks to grit & patience. Pointers for a young Indian team
Choker' is the unkindest of labels in sport. It means you have the talent, but not the temperament to win, especially when it matters most. It means your defeats are caused as much by your opponents as by the demons in your head. It is a terrible cross to bear and post-apartheid South Africa carried it in cricket for nearly three decades. Starting from Allan Donald's needless run-out against Australia in 1999 ODI World Cup semifinal to their capitulation from a dominant position against India in the 2024 T20 World Cup final – the Proteas frequently settled for failure when success looked eager for an embrace.
In the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's, South Africa rewrote the script, buried the tag of 'choker' forever. They were up against an opponent which relishes the big stage and seldom concedes an inch. But this time captain Temba Bavuma and his men didn't need any. In a high pressure encounter, where every delivery was fiercely contested over four days, South Africa played the game, ignored the occasion. Opener Aiden Markram's 136 will rank among the greatest Test innings of all time. Paceman Kagiso Rabada (5/51 and 4/59) was the knife that cut through Australia. But it was injured captain Bavuma's 66 that was inspirational, typifying the new determined South Africa which deservedly became champions.
Hopefully, the triumph will also act as a unifier in a country increasingly torn apart by differences within. South Africa's triumph also carries a lesson or two for a largely inexperienced Team India touring England. Australia were the favourites to win. But S Africa bowled with fire, batted with patience and discipline. They never gave up. They believed. Captain Gill and company would do well to imbibe these traits on a tour that will test them hard.

Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy launch delayed due to Ahmedabad air tragedy

LONDON: The launch of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy for the upcoming Test series between India and England has been delayed due to the recent airline tragedy in Ahmedabad which led to 275 deaths. Previously called the Pataudi Trophy in honour of former India captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, the decision to rename it as Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy (ATT) was taken by the host England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). "Yes, the launch of ATT Trophy (which was to be held originally on June 14) has been delayed due to the recent tragedy in Ahmedabad. It has not been cancelled. Hopefully, there will be a launch in next few days just before the start of the series," a BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity. More than 50 British nationals also lost their lives in the crash. The Air India flight 171 was travelling to London and crashed within minutes of take off. The renaming of the trophy is an ode to two living legends England pacer James Anderson and Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar. The series starting June 20 in Leeds will feature five Test matches. It has also been learnt that the ECB has received a request from the BCCI to retain the Pataudi connection to the series by having an individual honour named after him. As per sources, Tendulkar and ICC chairman Jay Shah want Pataudi's name to remain associated with the marquee series keeping in mind the late captain's contribution to Indian cricket.

AP The Shubman Gill-led India squad for the upcoming England Test series that the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee had announced last month might not be set in stone, with pacer Harshit Rana having been asked to stay back after the conclusion of India A's matches in England. Rana, who had made his international debut in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia recently, was part of the India A team that played two unofficial Tests against England Lions along with an intra-squad match against the Gill-led Indian team that will be in action four days from now. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Rana to not board the flight back to India with the rest of the India A squad According to RevSportz, Rana will not be boarding the flight back to India along with rest of the India A squad on Tuesday, 17 June, and has been asked to stay back in England with the main squad. Rana had played the first unofficial Test against the James Rew-led England Lions team in Canterbury, collecting a solitary wicket, that of Josh Hull, for 99 runs. Several members of the India A squad have reportedly received offers from County teams, but it isn't clear whether Rana's case is of a similar nature. The Agarkar-led selection committee back picked Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, Akash Deep and Shardul Thakur in the pace department for the tour of England along with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. Nitish Kumar Reddy has been picked as the lone seam-bowling all-rounder for the upcoming series. Mohammed Shami, who had made his return to the Indian team after spending more than a year on the sidelines, was overlooked for the tour, as was Rana – who had played the first two Tests in the tour of Australia, collecting 3/48 in his first outing in Perth.
