
LZS launches two campaigns to boost zakat collection
SHAH ALAM: Lembaga Zakat Selangor (LZS) today introduced two campaigns to ramp up zakat (tithe) collection activities using a targeted and more systematic method.
LZS Collection Division head Muhd Fikri Naim Harun said the campaigns - Jom Bantu Asnaf Setiap Bulan and Suburkan Niagamu - are among the initiatives implemented to achieve the targeted zakat collection of RM1 billion by 2030.
He said that these two campaigns offered rewards in the form of cash and holiday packages to selected zakat payers.
'Data from 2024 shows that the number of zakat payers through the Salary Deduction Scheme (SPG) is extremely positive and, as such, LZS has launched the Jom Bantu Asnaf Setiap Bulan initiative using the same concept, including direct debit.
'Through this campaign, the public stands to win the main prize of a tour package to Turkiye, in addition to three Muslim tour package prizes, nine special draws for 0.5 grammes of gold and 50 Touch 'n Go consolation prizes worth RM100,' he told reporters here.
The packages were launched at the ceremony to celebrate the strategic partners of LZS at the Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation (PKPS) here today.
As for the Suburkan Niagamu campaign, Muhd Fikri Naim said it was launched to encourage micro, small and medium enterprises in Selangor to fulfil their business zakat and, at the same time, stand a chance to win prizes worth over RM10,000.
He said the campaign offers the grand prize of an e-commerce website package and an entrepreneurship course worth RM3,500; a tablet and entrepreneurship course worth RM2,500 for second place; a software course and entrepreneurship course worth RM2,000 for third place; and a consolation prize of an entrepreneurship course worth RM500.

THE Madani government is strongly urged to cease the repeated deferments of its e-invoicing exercise by openly acknowledging the current lack of readiness for implementation and to embark on a comprehensive review of the nation's long-term tax structure. This is because the series of repeated delays are unfair to businesses that have already invested significant time and resources in preparation for the exercise, according to MCA's Selangor Youth Chief Tan Jie Sen. On Thursday (June 5), the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) announced yet another delay in its implementation of the e-invoicing system which is originally scheduled to be enforced this year for companies with an annual turnover of RM1 mil. Following exemption granted to businesses earning less than RM500,000 annually, the e-invoicing implementation phase for taxpayers with annual income of RM1 mil up to RM5 mil is now postponed to Jan 1, 2026 while that of taxpayers with annual income or sales up to RM1 mil has been deferred to July 1, 2026. 'More critically, such indecisiveness undermines public and business confidence in government policy,' Tan who is also an MCA Youth central committee member pointed out in a statement. 'The postponements also reflect unresolved issues within the current e-Invoice framework and its support infrastructure. 'The Finance Ministry (MOF) and the IRB must be transparent about these shortcomings by providing a concrete and practical plan for improvement rather than resorting to indefinite delays.' In a related development, MCA also took a swipe at the recent announcement by Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying that the government will soon expand the scope of the Sales and Service Tax (SST) via a gazette next week. 'This effectively amounts to a backdoor tax increase and lays bare the fiscal pressures facing the national treasury,' asserted Tan. 'Given the current state of strained public finances and rising fiscal burdens, the government must set aside political prejudices and seriously consider the reintroduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).' He added: 'Compared to the existing SST regime, GST offers a more structured, transparent and broad-based taxation model. Its president YK Lai said this would give more time to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to prepare for the implementation of the mandatory e-invoicing system for businesses. He was delighted that the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (HASiL) understands the difficulties MSMEs face in implementing the e-invoicing system, especially due to limited time and insufficient tools in terms of management. 'This change is expected to bring immediate relief to more than 90,000 additional micro and small enterprises, bringing the total number of exempted businesses to approximately 790,000, representing Malaysia's smallest and most vulnerable traders,' he said in a statement yesterday. Lai said MICSEA regarded this as a major step forward in reducing any management burden on MSMEs who may not have the digital infrastructure or resources to handle complicated invoicing requirements. For businesses with an income of RM500,000 and above, he noted that HASiL continues to show leniency by extending the grace period. According to him, businesses earning RM5 million to RM25 million in annual revenue must implement e-invoicing by July 1 this year. 'Businesses with RM1 million to RM5 million in annual revenue now have until Jan 1 next year, while businesses earning up to RM1 million annually will follow suit by July 1 next year.' Even during the extended grace period, Lai believed that employers benefit from greater flexibility as they can continue using consolidated e-invoices for employee reimbursements, client billing, and vendor payments. He said they are not required to issue individual invoices unless requested by the buyer and no enforcement action will be taken under Section 120 of the Income Tax Act 1967, as long as basic consolidated invoicing rules are followed. 'This is a timely and considerate move by the government, and MICSEA fully supports this decision especially as many employers are still recovering from post pandemic financial strain. Samenta heartened by Inland Revenue Board's latest measures on e-invoicing
PETALING JAYA: The Inland Revenue Board's (IRB) decision to exempt micro enterprises from e-invoicing and to give small and medium enterprises more time to comply with the mandate is a positive step that will help ease the current difficulties faced by businesses in the country. The Small and Medium Enterprises Association of Malaysia (Samenta) stated that IRB's exemptions are not only timely but also reflect an understanding of the real challenges faced by small businesses on the ground. 'We have provided input on both issues, and we are grateful that the government has shown genuine care and support for our most vulnerable enterprises,' Samenta national president Datuk William Ng said. 'We are especially heartened by the government's decisive move to permanently exempt businesses earning less than RM500,000 annually from the e-invoicing mandate. 'This exemption spares our smallest traders, hawkers and family-run shops, many operating without digital infrastructure, from compliance burdens that could have forced them to shut down or operate informally,' he added. Ng said the postponement of e-invoicing requirements until Jan 1, 2026, for businesses earning below RM5 million a year provides SMEs with much-needed time to prepare, strengthen their skills and adjust to new demands. This flexibility is essential for SMEs to survive and grow in today's changing economic environment, he added. On Thursday, IRB announced that the e-invoicing implementation for taxpayers with annual income or sales between RM1 million and RM5 million is postponed to Jan 1, 2026, while those below RM500,000 are exempted, and the deadline for those up to RM1 million is extended to July 1, 2026. The board also set a new e-invoicing implementation timeline: Phase 3 for taxpayers with annual income or sales between RM5 million and RM25 million starts on July 1, 2025; Phase 4 for those earning RM1 million to RM5 million begins on Jan 1, 2026; and Phase 5 for taxpayers with income up to RM1 million will commence on July 1, 2026. On the government's decision to postpone the permit requirement for the use of subsidised liquefied petroleum gas, Ng said: 'In response to the concerns of our street-level food operators, the temporary waiver of liquefied petroleum gas permit requirements will go a long way in safeguarding the daily livelihoods of thousands of families and small traders. It may be a small administrative change, but it carries significant implications for business continuity and the cost of living.' Without these timely measures, he said, Malaysia could have faced the potential collapse of thousands of small businesses, particularly those in the micro and informal sectors. Ng pointed out that the government's proactive stance has averted what could have become a national micro-business crisis. 'More importantly, these decisions send a clear message that the government sees SMEs as a central pillar of our economy and is responsive and willing to amend policies based on feedback from the ground,' he said, adding that Malaysia is a country where small businesses are treated with respect and understanding.
